Festival of the World @ Southbank Centre

今年の夏のロンドンオリンピック・パラリンピックにあわせ、サウスバンク・センターでは、Festival of the World（6月1日〜9月9日）が開催されている。スポーツや芸術が若者の夢や向上心を刺激すると考えた、近代オリンピックの創立者であるピエール・ド・クーベルタン男爵にインスピレーションを得たというこのフェスティバル、芸術は人々の人生を変えられることを証明するのを目的に、アート、音楽、ダンス、詩、文学、コメディなど世界の文化イベントの他、マーケットや「urban beach（人工ビーチ）」など、様々な催しが行われている。明日29日から始まるパラリンピックと同時に、障碍を持つアーティストたちの作品を紹介するイベント「Unlimited（8月30日〜9月9日）」もスタートする予定。

Southbank Centre has been hosting Festival of the World this summer from June 1 to September 9, coinciding with the London 2012 Olympics/Paralympics. The festival is inspired by the founder of the Olympic movement, Baron Pierre de Coubertin who believed that the arts and sport could raise the aspirations of young people. During the period, Southbank offers a variety of international cultural events such as art, music, dance, poetry, literature, and comedy, as well as markets, urban beach and more to demonstrate how art can transform lives. Corresponding with the start of Paralympic Games tomorrow on August 29, ‘Unlimited‘ (Aug 30–Sep 9) will showcase art and culture commissions by disabled and deaf artists.

中でリラックスしたり遊んだりできる、かまくら型のユニークな「London Earth Creature」は、エコ建築のスペシャリスト・Small Earthの作品。

“London Earth Creature” is the unique playscape for play & relax, designed and built by eco-build specialists Small Earth.

廃材を使用して大規模作品を創っているロンドンベースのアート集団・Robots>>>>の「Everything Is Beautiful When You Don’t Look Down（下を見なければ全てが美しく見える）」。2011年のFestival of Britainで使用した木材や鉄を再利用している。

世界から集められた布地で作られた、15mの高さの「Under the Baobab（バオバブの木の下で） 」は、Pirate Technicsが制作。

15 metres tall “Under the Baobab” is made from stacks of fabric rings using material from around the globe, created by Pirate Technics.

Trey WatkinsとCameron Brownの二人のアーティストの作品「Perspectives（視点）」。一見、無造作に置かれたアルファベットだけれど、一定のアングルから見るとメッセージが浮かび上がる。

Westfield Stratford City

オリンピックのシンクロデュエット決勝を見に行った帰り、オリンピックパーク横にある、昨年9月オープンのヨーロッパ最大のショッピングモール・Westfield Stratford Cityに立ち寄った（過去エントリー参照）。オリンピック開催中だけあって、人混みがすごい。でも、観客がオリンピックにお金を使い過ぎて財布のひもを締めているせいか不況のせいか、各店舗内は意外と空いている。買い物は我慢できても空腹は我慢できないのか、フードコートはさすがに席の奪い合い状態。ショップはありきたりのチェーン店が多いけれど、フードコートは、マクドナルドやスターバックスと言った大型チェーンだけでなく、世界各国の料理を取り揃え、Rosa’sやComptoir Libanaisなどの人気店も入居している。

結局この日は観戦疲れ・人疲れして全部見れなかったので、パラリンピック終了後、人気の少ない平日に一度ゆっくり見て回りたい。

I stopped by at the Europe’s biggest shopping center, Westfield Stratford City (see past entry), after attending the synchronized swimming duet final during the Olympics. There was a lot of people, but inside of the stores was rather empty, probably due to the recession or visitors trying to save money after spending a lot for visiting the Olympics. However, there was a war over empty seats here and there at its food court, as people cannot live without eating. The majority of shops at Westfield were boring chains, but it’s worth trying their food court where you can eat wide range of western and ethnic food at London’s popular eateries such as Rosa’s and Comptoir Libanais, not only at mega chains like McDonald’s and Starbucks.

I couldn’t fully enjoy the mall because I was exhausted from watching the game and the large crowd, but I will try again when is less busy during weekdays after the Paralympics.

Liberty（リバティ）のオリンピック期間限定ショップ（8月13日〜9月9日）/ Liberty pop-up store, opens during Olympic & Paralympic period (August 13 – September 9)

ストラトフォード駅とWestfieldの間にある、250mの長さのチタン製モニュメント「Stratford Shoal（ストラトフォードの魚群）」。このチタンは何と日本製（読売新聞）/ 250 metre-long titanium sculpture “Stratford Shoal“, placed in between Westfield and Stratford Station.

2012 Olympic National Hospitality Houses: Czech House @ Business Design Centre, Islington

五輪期間中、ビジターに自国の歴史や文化を紹介したり、自国の選手たちをサポートする、約30の「Olympic National Hospitality Houses（ホスピタリティー・ハウス）」が、ロンドン各地にオープン。欧米諸国や日本、韓国、ブラジル、ジャマイカ、ケニア、ナイジェリア、ニュージーランド、2022年ワールドカップのホスト国・カタール、そしてアフリカ53カ国共同のAfrica Village等、イベントやパブリック・ビューイング等で来客をもてなした。Africa Villageが資金難のために早期閉館したり（BBC）、ニュージーランドのKiwi HouseがBBQで火事騒動を起こしたり（The Telegraph）とトラブルもあったが、全体的には好評だったようだ。2020年東京オリンピック招致活動が目的のジャパンハウスは、入館がIOC関係者かJapan Society会員、日本人駐在員に限定されていたのが残念。震災・津波で激減した観光客を呼び戻す格好の機会だったのに。各ハウスを紹介するLondon Townウェブサイトで、ちょっと皮肉っぽい書かれ方をしていたのも当然かも。一般在留日本人はだめで駐在員だけオーケーだったのも不公平だし、オリンピック誘致という目的を考えても意味不明。

せっかくなので色々行きたかったのだけれど、結局、家から近い、エンジェルのBusiness Design CentreでやっていたCzech House（チェコ・ハウス）のみで終わってしまった。ほとんどのホスピタリティハウスはオリンピック閉会と同時に終了してしまったけれど、次回オリンピック開催国ブラジルのCasa Brasilは9月8日までやっているなので、行く機会があればまた報告します。

There were about 30 “Olympic National Hospitality Houses” opened around London during the Olympics to promote their countries and cultures as well as support their athletes. Many European countries as long with New Zealand, Brazil, Jamaica, Japan, Korea, Kenya, Nigeria, and Qatar who hosts 2020 World Cup had offered an array of events and activities for visitors. 53 African countries teamed together to  put on a Africa Village in Hyde Park, though it was forced to prematurely close due to debts outstanding (BBC). Another trouble was NZ’s Kiwi House got a fire incident caused by BBQ (The Telegraph), but overall, those hospitality houses added extra fun to the Games. Japan House was set up to promote Tokyo 2020 and an entry to the house was limited to IOC members and VIP, as well as Japan Society members and Japanese expats (I don’t understand what was to do with expats and Tokyo Olympic bid), and I agree with London Town website‘s sarcastic description about it. They should have also promoted tourism to Japan, which was largely affected by Japan earthquake and Tsunami! To me it is also unfair that only expats could come in but not other Japanese.

I wanted to try out as many hospitality houses, but we went only one, nearby Czech House at Business Design Centre in Angel. Although most of the hospitality houses have now closed, but next Olympic host country Casa Brasil at Somerset House is still open until September 8, and I will talk about it if I have a chance to go.

入場は£5だが、好意で無料で入れてもらう。入口を入ると、すぐ右がバスケットボール・コート、左手はチェコのオリンピックユニフォーム等を売るショップ。メイン会場を見下ろす3階には観光案内やメディアルーム、チェコの料理が味わえる食堂がある。チェコ・ハウスが人気だった大きな理由は、手に入りにくいオリンピックのチケットも、チェコのオリンピック委員会が割当分をここで売っていたこと。徹夜で並んで買う人も（イブニング・スタンダード紙）。

Entrance fee to Czech House is £5, though we got in for free with a favor from the house. After the entrance to the right was a basket ball court and on the left was a shop selling Olympic Czech national uniforms and accessories. There were canteen offered Czech food as well as tourist bureau and media room upstairs, surrounded the main area. Czech house was popular because hard-to-get Olympic tickets allocated to Czech Olympic committee were sold there (Evening Standard).

近未来的なデザインのメイン会場。チェコ人アーティストのエキシビションやコンサート、パブリックビューイングが行われた。チェコの国旗の赤・白・青のコスチュームに身を包んだ綺麗なお姉さんたちが、男性たちに人気。

Main space with futuristic design, celebrating with the athletes, panoramic projection, music, and exhibitions. Pretty young ladies in tricolore costumes, inspired by Czech national flag were popular among male visitors.

チェコハウス前に設置された、チェコ人アーティスト・David Černý（ダヴィッド・チェルニー）が製作した「London Booster」。ロンドン名物・ルートマスターが腕立て伏せをするというユニークなコンセプトと外観で、かなり話題を呼んだ。本人曰く、この作品は、オリンピックに訪れた「太ったアメリカ人」にエクササイズを奨励するためのものだそうだが、イギリスをはじめとするヨーロッパでも肥満が問題となってるので、アメリカ人のみをターゲットとするのはどうかと思うが。

This London’s red double decker bus was doing push ups “to encourage ‘fat Americans’ to exercise”, according to him (The Telegraph), but it is too much to attack only Americans as obesity is a big problem in UK as well as other countries.

Olympic Women’s Volleyball Preliminary Round @ Earl’s Court

オリンピック体験第3弾は、アールズ・コート展示センターで行われたバレーボール女子予選、日本対イギリス戦とイタリア対ロシア戦のダブルヘッダー。会場はアールズ・コート駅西側の出口のすぐ目の前なのだけれど、この日は混乱を避けるためか、東側が出口、西側が入口専用となっていたので、いつもより歩かされた。アールズ・コート展示センターは、以前にも100％デザイン展（参照：2009年/2010年）で数回行ったことがあるが、巨大な倉庫みたいな建物で、照明が少し暗めで床はコンクリートとちょっと殺風景な感じだけれど、中は大勢の観客で活気づいている。

開催国イギリスが登場するとあって、会場は大盛況。試合前やセット間は、マイクを持った男性が観客を盛り上げたり、スクリーンに映った観客にスクリーン上に描かれた太鼓を叩かせたりと大忙し。タイムアウトや休憩になる度に大音量の音楽が流れ、ポンポンを持ったチアリーダーが踊る。観客を退屈させないようにという配慮なんだろうけれど、ウルサいったらありゃしない。特にどこのオリンピック会場でもしょっちゅう流れる、クイーンの「ウィ・ウィル・ロック・ユー」には、正直うんざり。できれば余興なしで試合に集中したかった。

この日の試合は、第一試合は日本が2-0、第二試合はロシアが3−2で勝利。第二試合はフルセットまで行く手に汗握る攻防だったが、第一試合は日本の圧勝で、Mは退屈してイライラ。日本の勝利は嬉しいけれど、もう少しイギリスチームにも頑張って欲しかったな。

My Olympic experience No.3 was volleyball preliminary games (Japan vs UK, Italy vs Russia) at Earl’s Court Exhibition Centre. The venue is just in front of the west exit but we had to walk from the east exit quite a while on the day, as the east side was exit only and west side was entrance only to avoid the chaos. We went to Earl’s Court Exhibition Centre several times for 100% Design (past entries: 2009 / 2010). The place is like a huge tasteless warehouse with concrete floors and a bit dark, but it was quite lively with lots of spectators.

Atmosphere inside was full of enthusiasm as British team competed on the first game. The guy with microphone was busy cheering up the audience by talking excitedly and let people who were showed on screen to beat illustrated drums appeared on the screen. Cheerleaders were dancing with the loud music during the timeouts or in-between sets. So much noise all through the games! I understand that they tried to do anything to entertain the people, but it was too much. Now I am sick of Queen‘s “We Will Rock You“, which has been played repeatedly in all Olympic venues…

This day, Japan beat UK 2-0 on the first game and Russia won with 3-2 to Italy on the second. The game of Russia and Italy was heated up for full-sets and was very exciting, but M got bored while watching the first game – I was happy that Japan won, but I wished UK played a bit better…

Olympic Women’s Football Quarter Final @ Cardiff Millenium Stadium

私のオリンピック体験２番目は、ウェールズの首都・カーディフのミレニアム・スタジアムで行われた女子サッカー準々決勝、日本対ブラジル戦。カーディフまではパディントン駅から電車で2時間ちょっと。Super Off-Peak Returnという混雑時以外に使用できる割安切符でも往復£67.50（約8250円）かかる（see past entry for more about train fare）。ロンドンの会場で行われる試合は、チケット代にゾーン1〜9内乗り放題の1日券が含まれているのに、ロンドン以外の会場だと何もなし。甚だ不公平だ。そもそも「ロンドン・オリンピック」と銘打っているにも関わらず、男女ともサッカーの試合は、ウェンブリー・スタジアムで行われる数試合を除き、グラスゴー、ニューカッスル、マンチェスター、コヴェントリー、カーディフと、ロンドン以外のスタジアムで行われる。ロンドンは、ウェンブリー・スタジアムに加え、3万5000人以上収容できる大規模スタジアムが５つもあるのに（エミレーツ・スタジアム、スタンフォード・ブリッジ、ホワイト・ハート・レーン、ブーリン・グラウンド）、どうしてオリンピックで使用わないんだろう？LOCOG（ロンドンオリンピック・パラリンピック組織委員会）が、他都市にもオリンピック気分を味わってもらうためにそうしたのではないかと勝手に推測しているのだけれど、各地への移動を強いられる選手たちやサポーターにとっては、移動時間も出費もかかるし、たまったもんじゃない。

でも、2−0で日本が勝ったし、カーディフの人たちは皆フレンドリーだったし、翌日カーディフ観光も楽しんだということで、無駄足ではなかった。またカーディフ観光については後日書きます。

My Olympic game no.2 was the women’s football quarter final at Millennium Stadium in Cardiff. Cardiff is about two hours away by train from London Paddington station, and it cost £67.50/pp for Super Off-Peak Return fare, which is cheaper than normal fare but not cheap for supporters travelling from London (過去のエントリー. It is unfair that an Olympic ticket for any London venue includes one day travel card which you can travel free of charge within zone 1-9 (basically anywhere in London), but nothing for non-London venue. It’s a bit strange as it is called ‘London’ Olympic, but most of the Olympic football games both women’s and men’s tournaments are held outside London, except some at Wembley Stadium; in Glasgow, New Castle, Manchester, Cardiff and Coventry. London has five large football stadium with a capacity of over 35,000; Wembley Stadium, Emirates Stadium, Stamford Bridge, White Hart Lane, and Boleyn Ground, and I don’t understand why these stadium can’t be used for the Olympics! I guess that LOCOG intends to share some excitement with other British cities, but it is not nice for footballers and supporters who have to travel all over the country to see the games.

However, Japan beat Brazil 2-0 and we enjoyed sightseeing of Cardiff the day after, so it was worth it at the end of the day. And everyone was nice in Cardiff :) I will talk about my trip to Cardiff later.
