Isle of Olive Greek Shop @ Ada Street, off Broadway Market

イーストロンドンのブロードウェイマーケットをブラブラしていて、このギリシャ食料品のお店・Isle of Oliveを見つけた。どこにでもあるビルに入居している小さな事務所のような外観はあまり魅力的に見えないけれど、中はシンプルでキュートなインテリア。オーガニック生産者や品質の良い製品づくりに情熱を傾ける小規模農家、農協から仕入れた、エクストラバージン・オリーブオイル、オリーブ、ペーストやタプナード、フェタチーズ、はちみつ、Spoon sweetsと呼ばれる果物の砂糖漬けやジャム、野菜の瓶詰めや魚の缶詰、ドライフルーツやナッツ類、ギリシャのドライハーブ、スパイス、ハーブティーなどが、整然と並べられており、店内では軽食も頂ける。可愛いお店なんだけど、ブロードウェイマーケットからちょっと目につきにくいところにあるのが、ちょっと心配。

ギリシャに行った時に食べたギリシャ風サラダがとても美味しかったので、自分でも作るようになったのだが、Isle of Oliveで買ったギリシャ直輸入のフェタチーズはフレッシュで、まさにギリシャで経験した味。また、イギリスでは滅多に見かけない、ギリシャのハーブティー類も興味深い。Ironwortと呼ばれる地中海に多く自生する植物を乾燥させたGreek Mountain Tea（チャイ・トゥ・ヴヌー）は、ギリシャで泊まった宿で飲んで気に入ったお茶で、こちらでも手に入るのが嬉しい。また、スパイスとして料理に使うドライセージや、うつ病に効くといわれ、こちらでサプリメントとして売られているセント・ジョーンズ・ワートのお茶もある。長くて陰鬱なイギリスの冬を乗り切るには、このセント・ジョーンズ・ワート茶が必要かも。

ブロードウェイマーケットのお店以外にも、Isle of OliveはエンジェルのChapel Market（毎日曜）やイベント等にも屋台を出しているそう。お店や屋台に買いに行くのが面倒くさい人は、オンラインショップでどうぞ。

When we walked around Broadway Market in East London, we found Isle of Olive, a deli & shop selling a variety of authentic Greek food products, sourced from independent producers, agricultural cooperatives and passionate artisans: such as extra virgin olive oils, olives, pastes & tapenade spreads, Feta cheese, honey, Spoon sweets & jams, a selection of natural Greek herbs, spices and herbal teas, preserved vegetables & fishes, dried fruits & nuts, Rusks, and so on. The exterior of the shop looks like a small office in the boring apartment complex and isn’t really appealing, but the inside has a lot of charm; presentation of the products is nice, so as its simple & cute interior. There is also an eating space where you can have some Greek snacks or sweets as well. The shop is not really visible from lively Broadway Market, and hope people can find it so that this little cute place can survive.

I enjoyed Greek food a lot when we traveled to Peloponnese last year. Now I make Greek salad myself, and feta I bought from Isle of Olive was delicious. I was also fascinated to find some Greek herbal teas that rarely seen here. I love Greek Mountain Tea, the infusion made out of the flowers and leaves of the Ironwort plant, which is the most popular herbal tea in Greece, I had it at a small inn in Greece. Other teas are made of the plants I’ve never thought of making a tea out of, such as sage and St John’s Wort. I may need St John’s Wort tea for keeping up my mood during the long, dark winter.

Other than the shop near Broadway Market, Isle of Olive has also a stall on Angel’s Chapel Market every Sunday and at other food events, fairs and festivals, or check their online shop if you prefer.

The London 2012 Shop

これがロンドン・オリンピックのグッズが買える公式オンラインショップ。でも正直言って、凡庸なウェブデザインもグッズも全然気に入らない。カクカクしたオリンピックロゴや全く可愛くないマスコットが嫌いなせいもあるけれど、グッズはデザインも良くないし、見た目が安っぽい（値段は安くないのに）。

それに比べ、Team GB（オリンピック・イギリス代表）のライオンの頭を模したロゴやウェブサイトは悪くない。オリンピック委員会も「cool（格好いい）」なロンドンの名に恥じないよう、デザインにもっと気を遣うべきだった。

This is the London 2012 online shop for official Olympic goods. To be honest, I am not very impressed by the merchandise or its mediocre web design. Not only because I don’t like the angular Olympic logo and scary mascots, but also because those products are badly designed and look cheap (though price is not cheap).

In compare, the Team GB’s lion head logo and its website look much better than the one of London 2012 committee – they should have tried harder to keep up the reputation of ‘cool’ London!

先日、Daily Candyをチェックしていて見つけたウェブサイト「Grannies Inc」。イギリス人Granny（おばあちゃん）が、100％イギリスで紡いだメリノウールを使って編んでくれる、カスタムメイドの毛糸の帽子、マフラー、リストウォーマー、スヌード（筒状ネックウォーマー）、ヘッドバンドをオーダーできる。さまざまなスタイルやパターン、編み方、色が選べ、リボンやぼんぼんなどのアイテム追加も可能。暇を持て余している編物好きのおばあちゃんたちに、生き甲斐＋金銭的余裕を与え、しかも自分も儲かるなんて、なんて素晴らしいアイデアだと感動した。→参考記事

I found the website “Grannies Inc” the other day on Daily Candy daily newsletter. This online shop sells “design your own” “one-of-a-kind knitwear” “Granny-made in the UK” such as beanie, scarf, wrist warmer, snood and headband, using 100% British spun merino wool yarn. You can make your own design from different styles, textures, colors and added features. I thought it is a great idea to give knitting loving grannies meaningful work + extra income, and the shop makes a profit from it – it’s a win-win game! →related article

近年イギリスでは、エコ・ムーブメントや使い捨て文化への反動、不況、古き良き伝統への回帰、クリエイティブ指向などが相まって、ハンドメイドが流行中（関連記事）。イズリントンにある手作りワークショップ「The Make Lounge」はいつも大盛況。これまたイズリントンのCross Streetにあった人気の毛糸のお店・Loopも、今年6月にはアンティーク・マーケットで有名なCamden Passageに引っ越し（SMUGの隣）、3フロアに店舗拡大した。手作り品を売るアメリカのオンライン・コミュニティEtsyのイギリス版ブログも、盛り上がってるみたい。私も実は隠れ手作り大好き人間。友達には言っていないけどね：）

In recent years, all things handmade became trendy in Britain, due to the green movement, a backlash against our throwaway culture, recession and a nostalgic longing for creativity (related article). Handmade workshops at The Make Lounge in Islington are booked well (often sold out). A cute little yarn shop Loop, also in Islington, moved from Cross Street to Angel’s antique market Camden Passage (next to SMUG) this June , and now has a bigger space with three floors. An American ecommerce website selling handmade items Etsy‘s UK blog gets into swing. I love sewing and knitting too, and it’s my secret hobby that I’ve never told my friends :-)

Modernist T-Towels: Kensal Green and Trellick Tower

コヴェント・ガーデンにあるLondon Transport Museum（交通博物館）で買った、「People Will Always Need Plates」のModernist T-Towels（ティー・タオル）。デザインが素敵なので買ったから、お皿拭きには使わない。イギリス製でコットン100％のこのティー・タオルは、スクリーン印刷の鮮やかなカラーで、Trellick Tower（トレリック・タワー）とKensal Green（ケンサル・グリーン）の街並がデザインされている。ほかの図柄も欲しかったのだけれど、9種類あるモダニスト・デザインコレクションのうち、この2種類しか売っていなかった。ノッティング・ヒルの北にあるトレリック・タワーは、1972年に完成したロンドンを代表するモダン建築で、建築家・Ernő Goldfinger（エルノ・ゴールドフィンガー）によって設計された、ブルータリズム様式の公共住宅。ロンドン北西部に位置するケンサル・グリーンは、これと言った特徴のあるエリアではないけれど、クイーンのフレディ・マーキュリーが火葬された場所で、著名人が多く眠るKensal Green Cemeteryがある。

I bought these Modernist T-Towels (Tea Towels) by People Will Always Need Plates at London Transport Museum in Covent Garden. The 100% cotton tea towels is proudly made in UK, and feature Trellick Tower and houses in Kensal Green in rich screen-printed colours. I got them for its design, so I won’t use them for drying dishes. I wanted to buy other design as well, but the shop had only these two design among 9 modernist design collection. Trellick Tower is a 31-storey block of public housing in north of Notting Hill, designed in the Brutalist style by architect Ernő Goldfinger and completed in 1972. Kensal Green on northwest London is not exciting area, but there is the Kensal Green Cemetery which is one of the finest Cemeteries in London and is known that Queen’s Freddie Mercury was cremated there.

ロンドンの交通の歴史を物語る、London Transport Museum。2005年からの改修工事の後、2007年11月にリニューアルオープンしたコヴェント・ガーデンの博物館のほかに、Acton（アクトン）にある Depot（倉庫）にもコレクションを展示している。ここのショップがなかなか、センスの良い品揃えを誇っている。買い物袋のデザインもモダンで、これを手に入れるために買い物したくなる。オンライン・ショップもあって、海外発送もしてくれる。コヴェント・ガーデンのど真ん中にあって交通の便もいいし、ロンドンに数多あるチープな店で粗悪品を買うぐらいなら、ロンドン土産はぜひここで。

London Transport Museum conserves and explains London’s transport heritage. The main museum in Covent Garden was reopened in November 2007 after two years of refurbishment. Its Acton Depot also holds the majority of the Museum’s collections which are not on display in the museum. The museum shop has a good selection of products, and its modern and stylish shopping bags is another reason to shop there. The museum has an online shop as well and delivers to worldwide (→details). The museum is located in the heart of Covent Garden, so grab London’s souvenirs there, rather than shopping trashes at cheap and ugly stores around London.
