Museum of Brands, Packaging and Advertising @ Notting Hill

ノッティング・ヒルにあるMuseum of Brands, Packaging and Advertising（ブランド・パッケージ・広告博物館）に行った。この博物館には、ビクトリア朝から現代まで、Robert Opie Collection（ロバート・オピー・コレクション）所蔵の日用品や食料品等1万2,000点以上の品物が展示されている。

オピー氏は、16歳だった1963年に、タバコやコーンフレークの箱など様々な商品パッケージの収集を始めた。現在そのコレクションはパッケージのみならず、瓶、ラベル、広告やプロモーション用品、おもちゃやゲーム、旅行、交通、レジャー、娯楽に関するアイテム、漫画、雑誌、新聞、土産物、ポストカード、歌詞カード、ポスター、パンフレット等々、日常生活に存在するありとあらゆるもの50万点以上と膨大な数になるそう。時系列になっている展示室に並べられたこれらの品々から、イギリスの消費生活とその変遷が垣間みられる。

私のような外国人をもノスタルジーを感じさせる、非常に興味深いコレクションだけれど、とにかく狭い。こんなにたくさんの品々が、小さく薄暗い部屋にぎゅうぎゅうに詰められているのは、本当に残念。もっと明るく広々としたスペースで、1点1点じっくり眺めたいと思う。

I went to the Museum of Brands, Packaging and Advertising in Notting Hill. This tiny museum features over 12,000 original household products and food package, from Victorian times to the present day, from the Robert Opie Collection.

Mr. Opie started to gather contemporary packaging from cereal boxes to cigarette packs, when he was 16 in 1963. Since then the collection has expanded and now  contains over 500,000 items – not only packaging but also anything seen in everyday life; bottles, labels, signs, promotional and advertising material as well as toys, games, travel, transport, leisure, entertainment, comics magazines, newspapers, souvenirs, and ephemera such as postcards, song sheets, posters and brochures. By walking thorough the exhibition rooms in chronological order, you can observe daily life in Britain and its change over decades.

Impressive collection that make even a foreigner like me nostalgic, but the museum is so stuffy – too much things in such a tiny and dark space. I felt a bit dizzy and claustrophobic at the end… I wish I can see those items up close in more relaxing and generous space!

エリザベス女王のダイアモンド・ジュビリー（戴冠60周年）記念商品の数々 / Queen’s Diamond Jubilee products

Marks & Spencer Diamond Jubilee Collection

6月2〜5日に予定されている、エリザベス女王のダイアモンドジュビリーの祭典（王室公式サイト）にあわせて発売された、マークス＆スペンサーの商品たち。缶入りのショートブレッドやチョコレート、マシュマロをチョコレートでコーティングしたTeacake、ペーパーナプキン、紙皿等々。イギリス国旗、女王の横顔、またロンドンの様々なアイコンをあしらった、レトロでキュートなパッケージは、クリスマス商品（参照ブログ記事）も手がけたイラストレーターのPhil Hankinson（フィル・ハンキンソン）氏がデザインした。期間限定商品で、イギリス土産にもぴったり。

These are the Marks & Spencer’s products, celebrating Queen’s Diamond Jubilee weekend (June 2 – 5 →official website of the British Monarchy). These cute retro packages with Union Jack, Queen’s silhouette, and London’s various icons, are designed by an illustrator Phil Hankinson who was also in charge of M&S’s Christmas products (past entry). Treats such as shortbread and chocloate in tin boxes, teacakes (chocolate coated marshmallows), as well as party wares such as paper napkins and dishes – these limited period products are also perfect for souvenirs from Britain.

Marks & Spencer Scottish Shortbread Tin

最近、マークス＆スペンサーのストアブランドのパッケージデザインが可愛い（また追々紹介します）。ちょっとレトロなデザインのクリスマス用缶入りビスケット各種（参考：gumo gazette）もよくできていて、プレゼントやパーティの手みやげに最適。この、ロンドン名物2階建てバスをモチーフにした缶入りビスケットは、スコットランド発祥の伝統菓子・Shortbread（ショートブレッド）3種27個入りで、お値段は£8。イラストを描いたのは、イラストレーターのPhil Hankinson（フィル・ハンキンソン）氏。そのレトロでクラシックな画風は、チェコスロバキアの絵本作家・Miroslav Sasek（ミロスラフ・サセック）の名作「This is London」（1959年）を彷彿させる。中のビスケットを食べ終わっても、小物入れとして使えそう。ロンドンのお土産にもぴったり。

Recently package design of Marks & Spencer‘s store brands has improved (I will talk more later). Retro-feel Christmas biscuit tins is well-done (reference: gumo gazette), and is good for a present and gift. This tin box with London’s famous double-decker contains a selection of 27 shortbreads in 3 varieties, and costs £8. The package was designed by illustrator Phil Hankinson, and the his style resembles the old classic “This is London” (1959) by Czech illustrator and auther, Miroslav Sasek. You can re-use the tin box after finishing all biscuits, and this is a great souvenir of London as well.

Cardboard Birdhouse by Kikkerland

だいぶ前にヴィクトリア&アルバート博物館のミュージアムショップで買ってすっかり忘れていた、段ボール製の巣箱が出てきたので、早速組み立ててみた。ニューヨークを拠点とするKikkerlandの「Foldable Birdhouse（折り畳める巣箱）」、防水加工された段ボールで出来ていて、組み立ても簡単。止まり木もついている。自分でも作れそうなシンプルな巣箱だけれど、可愛いパッケージ・デザインにつられて買った。このブログを書くにあたってネットを色々調べてたら、kikkerland online shopのアメリカでの値段は$4。私は£7払ったから、約2倍以上した計算になる。ミュージアムショップだから、常設展は入場無料の博物館の経営を助けるために、定価かそれより高めに値段設定をしているんだろうけれど。

巣箱は専用の茶封筒に入っていて、外のプラスチックの包装をを取ると、そのまま発送も出来る。外側にペイントしたり、ステッカーやシールを貼ったりして、自分オリジナルの巣箱をデザインすることも出来るけれど、絵の才能のない私は、そのままシンプルに。鳥のエサを買わないといけないんだけれど、取りあえずはポップコーン用のコーンを入れてみた（大きすぎ？！）。果たして都会のアパートの小さな巣箱に鳥たちは来てくれるるんだろうか？

Today I found this cardboard birdhouse that I bought a while ago at the Victoria and Albert Museum and forgot about, and finally made it. The “Foldable Birdhouse” by New York based Kikkerland is made of water resistant coated cardboard and is easy to put together. It comes with a wooden dowel for the front perch as well. This birdhouse is just simple and ordinary looking, but I bought this for its cute package design. I was searching the information about the product and found out that it cost only $4 on kikkerland online shop in US, while I paid £7 at V&A – it means it cost more than double here. The museum shop probably sell at RRP or even higher, to help funding the museum which is free admission for permanent collection.

The birdhouse is enclosed in the brown envelope and you can post it out, just removing the plastic package. You can make your original birdhouse by painting or putting some stickers on outside, but unfortunately I don’t have an artistic talent and just keep it as it is. I have to buy bird food, but I put popcorn maize for now (too big?!). Looking to see if some birds come to visit their new house :-)
