J+A Café @ Clerkenwell

J+A caféは、小さな路地で結ばれた、Clerkenwell Road（クラーケンウェル・ロード）とGreat Sutton Street（グレート・サットン・ストリート）の間の中庭の、ビクトリア朝時代の元ダイアモンド切断工場内にある。むき出しの赤レンガ壁に中古の木製の家具、天井から吊り下げられた丸いランプシェードに囲まれた、「traditional family values and good old-fashioned hospitality（伝統的な家族の価値観と古き良き時代のホスピタリティ）」がコンセプトのこのカフェは、田舎の食堂のように懐かしい感じで、居心地がいい。外の席も、道路に面していないので静かだし、排気ガスも気にせずゆっくり落ち着ける。

J+Aでは、ヘルシーなホーム・クッキングを謳い、シンプルで新鮮な材料を使う（人気のカフェは、どこもそうだけど）。イングリッシュ・ブレックファストやオムレツ、パンケーキなどの朝食、パイやシチュー、スープ、キッシュ、ベイクド・ポテトなどの日替わりメニューの他、サンドイッチやサラダなどがいただけるランチ、そして週末のブランチ類と、時間や日によって違うメニューが楽しめる。

初めて行ったこの日は、クラブサンドイッチと日替わりのラム肉のサンドイッチをオーダー。具のチキンやベーコンは少しドライで、水なしでは飲み込むのもキツい。欲を言えば、挟んだ食パンはトーストしてほしかった。1回食事しただけでは判断は下せないけれど、少なくともこの2皿は今イチかな。でも、天気のいい日の昼下がりのお茶とおしゃべりには、最適のお店（でも、天気の悪い日はちょっと陰気くさいかも）。

J+A café is located on the ground floor of former Victorian diamond-cutting factory, in a courtyard between Clerkenwell Road and Great Sutton Street, accessed via a small alleyway. Inspired by “traditional family values and good old-fashioned hospitality”, the space with red brick walls, secondhand wooden furniture, and hanging silver lump shades, is cozy and warm, resembling rustic country diner. Outside seating area is calm and quiet as the café is not facing to any street, and you don’t have to worry about inhaling fumes from cars.

J+A claims to believe in “healthy and wholesome home-cooking and baking”, using simple recipes and fresh produce (as any other popular cafés in London). They offers breakfast, lunch, and weekend brunch. Breakfasts are British regular comfort foods including English breakfast, omelette, and pancake, whereas the lunch menu offers more variety such as daily specials of pie or stew, soup, quiche or Tartlet,  and baked potato, as well as regular sandwiches and salads.

On our first visit, we ordered Club Sandwich and daily sandwich special with lamb. Chicken, bacon and lamb were a bit dry and were hard to swallow without a help of water. I wish the bread was toasted as well. I can’t judge their food with only one visit, but I have to say that I wouldn’t order these two dishes again… Food was disappointing on the day, but J+A is the perfect place for a cup of tea or coffee on a nice + warm day (though maybe a bit dark on a bad weather).

Profile American Diner/Bar/Café @ Wardour Street, SOHO

The DinerやThe Breakfast Clubなど、最近、レトロなアメリカ風ダイナーをモダンにアレンジした店が、ロンドンに増えている。SOHO・Wardour StreetにあるProfile（プロファイル）も、その一つ。ナイトクラブっぽい外観に、黄色と黒をベースにした、ファンキーでレトロな内装が、ロンドン・ナイトライフの中心地、ソーホーらしい。私たちが行ったのは昼下がりだったので、人気がなかったけれど、場所柄、週末なんかは混みそう。

メニューには、ハンバーガーやホットドッグ、スペアリブ、またフレンチトーストやパンケーキなどのブレックファースト類など、古き良きアメリカン・フードが並ぶ。今日は、「Original New Yorker」ホットドッグ（£5.50）を注文。ロンドンでは、ホットドッグは意外と見かけない。100％牛肉でできた、20cmはありそうなソーセージの上に、甘く炒めたオニオンをのせたホットドッグは、ホクホクのフライドポテトがついて、ボリューム満点、かなり食べごたえがある。少しトーストしてあるバンもなかなか美味しい。ホットドッグの本場、ニューヨークで評判のGrays Papayaにはかなわないかもしれないけれど、私は結構好き。Mは何が不満なのか、食後のillyコーヒーも含めて、今イチ気に入らなかったみたいだけれど。

Recently a retro American style diner arranged in modern is getting popular in London, such as The Diner and The Breakfast Club that I talked in the past, and Profile on Wardour Street in SOHO is also one of them. Its night-clubish exterior and yellow x black based retro funky interior go well with SOHO, the wild and chaotic center of London night life. There was only few customers when we went in the afternoon, but I assume it would be quite busy on weekend with its the location.

On its menu, you can find classic American comfort food such as burgers, hotdogs, and spare ribs, as well as all-day breakfast like French toast and pancakes. Today we ordered “Original New Yorker” hotdog (£5.50) – a hotdog is not easy to find in London for some reason. About 20cm (8″) long 100% beef sausage and sweet sautéed onions topping with fresh toasted bun, served with chunky fries, was pretty big, and I was completely full after I finished all. Although their hot may not beat Grays Papaya, a famous hotdog shop in New York, but I quite like it. However, M didn’t get the same satisfaction I got for some reason, including illy espresso after the meal.

バイクの駐車料金を払うのをうっかり忘れて、£40（14日以内に払う場合の早期割引額。それ以降28日以内は満額£80）の罰金切符をもらってしまった。。。

We forgot to pay for motorycle parking and got a ticket for £40 (pay during the reduced charge period of 14 days. Full amount of £80 applied if paying after 14 days before 28 days period is over)…

The Breakfast Club Café @ Angel + Hoxton

The Breakfast Clubは、その名の通り、美味しい朝食で有名なカフェ。オブザーバー紙やタイム・アウト誌のBest Breakfastにノミネートされる等、メディアの評価も上々だ。ソーホーが第一号店で、エンジェルのカムデン・パッセージとホクストンにも店を持つ。朝食以外にも、ブランチ、ランチ＆ディナーと、一日中カジュアルに食事できる。メニューは、伝統的なイングリッシュ・ブレックファストからアメリカン・パンケーキやメキシコ風ブリート、サンドイッチ、サラダ、ハンバーガーと幅広い。ソーホー店には行ったことがないので、近場のエンジェル、ホクストン店をリポートしました。

ホクストン店は、ヒップなバーやレストランの集まるホクストン・スクエアの南、Rufus streetにある。広い店内は、黄色をベースに、アメリカの50年代ダイナー風に、カラフルでキッチュに装飾されている。アンティークで有名なカムデン・パッセージにあるエンジェル店は、階段を少し上がった中２階にあり、ホクストン店に比べ、こじんまりしている。インテリアの感じはホクストンと同じだが、壁に貼られた80年代に流行った歌手のポスターや、木彫りのアメリカン・インディアン像が、サンタ・フェ辺りのカフェを想像させる。ミッド・センチュリー風のインテリアは悪くないんだけれど、ちょっとごちゃごちゃ飾り過ぎかな。私的にはもう少しシンプルなのが好み。店の装飾を半分取ったらもっとすっきりするのにと思う。特に下の写真のオレンジ色のドアに吊るされた緑とオレンジの男性用ブリーフ。悪趣味なパンツ見ながら食事したくない！

料理は、味はなかなかだけれど、はっきり言って巨大。前に座っていた女性客はイングリッシュ・ブレックファストの半分以上を残していたし、私のオーダーしたパンケーキは大皿に5枚（6枚？）も出てきて、食べ終わる頃には胸焼け状態。。。でも、お腹をすかせた若者には有り難いだろう。横に座っていた細身の若い男性は、大きな皿に山盛りになったスクランブルエッグ＆サーモンがのったトーストと、同じく大盛りのサラダを、ものの5分程で食べ終わっていた。

ブレックファスト・クラブは、先日書いたDaylesford Organic Caféとはいろんな意味で、正反対の店である。

The Breakfast Club is, as its name suggests, famous for its delicious breakfast menus. Media reputation seems to be great – the Observer and Time Out nominated the café as one of the top breakfast places in London. The first café opened in SOHO and now there are two more places in Hoxton and Angel. Other than their signature breakfasts, they offer all-day food on their brunch, lunch & dinner menu, and the menu has a wide range of food from traditional English breakfast, American pancake, Mexican Burrito, burgers, sandwiches, salads etc. I’ve never been to SOHO café and here is my report on the Hoxton Square and Angel branches.

The Hoxton branch is located on Rufus street on the south of Hoxton Square. Spacious café is colorfully decorated in 50’s American-diner style. The Angel branch is few steps up on the stairs from its entrance on the famous antique street Camden Passage in Angel. The interior is the same style as Hoxton branch, but it looks more eccentric with 80’s pop singer’s posters put up on the wall and the wooden American Indian statue, and it reminds me of a café in Santa Fé. Their kitsch mid-century style decor is cute but a bit too much, and I prefer simpler interior. It would be much nicer for me if they remove half of the objects – especially a green and orange male underwear hang on the orange door (see in the photo below). I don’t want to eat food looking at the underwear!

The food is not bad, but the amount is huge. The woman sat in front of us couldn’t eat even half of her English breakfast, and my plate with 5 big size pancakes made me start my lunch great but end with heartburn… But it is great value for money and would be perfect for a hungry young man – the skinny guy next me finished a mountain of scramble eggs and smoke salmon on the toast and massive bowl or salad in just 5 minutes.

In many ways, the Breakfast Club is completely opposite to Daylesford Organic Café.
