Damien Hirst @ Tate Modern

イギリス現代アート界の風雲児、ダミアン・ハーストの大規模回顧展「Damien Hirst」が、9月9日までテートモダンで開催中だ。90年代に台頭したヤング・ブリティッシュ・アーティスト（YBAs）の第一人者である彼は、大手広告代理店サーチ・アンド・サーチ社長／美術コレクター／サーチ・ギャラリー創設者である Charles Saatchi（チャールズ・サーチ）氏に、その才能を見いだされ、動物のホルマリン漬けや腐乱死体など「死」をテーマにした作品でアート界に衝撃を与えた。これらの作品に対する評価は賛否両論。それでも現代美術の数々の賞を受賞し、世界にその名を轟かせた。1999年以来、盗作疑惑も取りざたされたりもしたが、トップアーティストの地位を確立、現在彼の作品はコレクションのみならず投資のターゲットとして億単位で売買されている。総資産額（2010年調べ）はなんと2億1500万ポンド。イギリスで最も金持ちのアーティストでもある。

展覧会では動物死体のインスタレーションの他、白いキャンバスに様々な色の水玉を規則的に配置した「spot paintings」、回転する円形のキャンバスに描いた「spin paintings」、そして薬局を再現した「Pharmacy」、蝶をモチーフにしたカラフルな絵画、タバコの吸い殻を使ったインスタレーション等々、ハーストの代表作が一挙展示されている。ユニークなのは、たくさんの生きた蝶を展示室内に放したインスタレーション「In and Out of Love (White Paintings and Live Butterflies)」（1991年）。展示室は温室になっており中は蒸し暑く、蝶が飛び交っている。でも、死んでいる蝶もいて、ちょっと可哀想。

ダミアン・ハーストの作品はあちこちで目にするので食傷気味、大きな期待をせず見に行ったけれど、これだけの数の作品が一堂に揃っているとやはり圧巻。大きな作品も多く見応えがある。ただ、動物愛護主義者じゃないけれど、牛や羊、サメのホルマリン漬け（科学博物館じゃないんだから）やハエがたかった動物の死体（かなり生臭いので、鼻の利く人は注意）、煙臭い吸い殻の展示は意味不明でいただけない。残念だったのは、待ち時間が長過ぎて、地上階の小室に置かれた「For the Love of God」を見られなかったこと。しばらく前、この作品に似た、ダイアモンドっぽい石で飾られた頭蓋骨がガラスケースに入れられて、オールドストリート近くの建物から運び出されるのを見た。警備員も付いていなかったので本物じゃないとは思うけど。

The most prominent member of the Young British Artists (YBAs) and best known British modern artist, Damien Hirst‘s major retrospective, ‘Damien Hirst‘ is currently running at Tate Modern until September 9th. His talent was founded by  Charles Saatchi, a co-founder of global advertising agency Saatchi & Saatchi and famous art collector who opened the Saatchi Gallery. He became famous for a ‘death’ theme series of preserved dead animals, which caused the sensation to the world of modern art. Some people love him, and some others hate him – but he won some prestigious art prizes and now he established a status of one of the world’s leading artists whose works are in high demand, both for collections and for investment, and are sold for millions of pounds (though he has been accused of plagiarising several times since 1999). His wealth was valued at £215m in the 2010 Sunday Times Rich List, which made him Britain’s wealthiest artist.

The exhibition gathers Hirst’s major artworks together with above mentioned “dead animals”, such as “spin paintings” created on a spinning circular surface, “spot paintings” with rows of randomly coloured circles, installation of pharmacy recreation, colourful paintings with butterfly motif, and installation of cigarette butts. The unique one is “In and Out of Love (White Paintings and Live Butterflies)” (1991), a temperature-controlled room (hot & humid) with dozens of live butterflies flying all over. It was sad to see some dead butterflies, though.

Before going the exhibition, I didn’t expect much as I saw his works everywhere and thought it was too much. However, seeing a large amount of his works in one place was quite impressive and actually I enjoyed the show – though I hate the smell of cow head full of flies (really nauseating!) and believe that installations of stinky cigarette butts as well as dead animals like shark, sheep and cow in immersed in formaldehyde (it’s not a science museum!) are bad taste and pointless. One regret is that I missed to see “For the Love of God“ exhibited in a small hut located on the ground floor, because of a long queue. A while ago (few years ago?), I saw someone carrying similar looking diamond-decorated human scull in a glass case, out of one building near Old Street. I am not sure if that was ‘it’, but I doubt as there was no security guard around…

NHS Prescription / Homeopathy Remedies for Cold and Flu

昨日、バスから追い出され、雪の中を半時間歩いたせいか、ひきかけの風邪が悪化した。鼻がぐずぐずしてひどい鼻声になり、しょっちゅう鼻をかんでいる。風邪薬を買いに行きがてら、薬局で先日もらった処方箋薬も受け取る（上は以前使用しなかった処方箋）。イギリスでは、処方箋薬は無料。だから特に指定がなければ、価格の安いジェネリック医薬品が処方される。薬代は無料でも、処方箋料（NHS prescription charges）を一回につき£7.20払わなければいけない。なので、成分や薬効が変わらなれば、値段の安い、処方箋の要らない市販薬を勧められることもある。

少し前に街角でもらったフリーペーパー、The Epoch Times（大紀元：法輪功関連の新聞だそうだ。知らなかった！読んだのは英語版）に載っていた、新型インフルエンザに効くというホメオパシー・レメディーをBoots（ブーツ）で買っておいたので、風邪にも効くかなと使ってみた。ホメオパシーが盛んなイギリスでは、ブーツ等の普通の薬局で手に入る。最初に少しの喉の痛みを感じてから、風邪やインフルエンザのひきはじめに効くというAconite（Aconitum napellus：アコナイト、トリカブト／£4.99）を使用。その後数日間は、レメディーのせいか安静にしていたからかどうか分からないけれど、症状は悪化しなかった。風邪がひどくなった今日から、新型の初期流行に最も効果的だったというArsen alb（Arsenicum Album：アーセニカム、砒素／£4.99）が、鼻水を伴う風邪にも効くというので試している。

ホメオパシーは、科学的にその効果が証明されておらず、プラセボ効果以上に効き目はないと言われているのだが、イギリスでは£4000億の市場規模を誇るビジネス。レメディーを売っているブーツ自身、効果はさておき、売れるから取り扱っていると認めている。Mは超科学信奉者なので、ホメオパシーや代替療法は一切信用しない。共に薬剤師である両親も然り。私はというと、プラセボ効果でも何でも、効けばラッキーぐらいに思っている。また他に効果的な治療法や薬がなければ、民間療法でも何でも、すがりたくなる気持ちも分かる。さて、今使っているレメディーの効果はいかに？でも、あんまり効果がない場合に備えて、一応市販の風邪薬も買ってある。

Probably because I was kicked out from the bus and forced to walk in snow for half an hour yesterday, my cold got worse. My nose is runny and my voice has changed, and I have been blowing my nose  all the time. So I went to a pharmacy to buy a cold medicine, and picked up my prescription drug as well (the prescription above is the unused one I got in the past). In UK, a prescription drug is free, but you pay NHS prescription charges for £7.20 (price from April 2009 to now). and usually a cheap generic medicine is given if you don’t choose others. A pharmacist often recommend to buy over-the-counter drug, if it is cheaper than prescription charge and if the ingredients and effectiveness are more or less the same with the prescription medicine.

I bought two homeopathy remedies from Boots, which supposedly effective for Swine flu, after I read the Epoch Times‘ (free paper founded by practitioners of the Falun Gong – I didn’t now it) article about it. First I had used Aconite (Aconitum napellus) , which can be helpful at the first sign of flu and cold symptoms. My condition had been the status quo for few days – I don’t know because of the effect of Aconite, or because I had been at home kept myself warm. Now my symptoms got worse and I started to take Arsen alb (Arsenicum Album), which is “the most commonly indicated remedy for the H1N1 virus outbreak of early 2009,” as I read that it works for a blocked nose as well.

Homeopathy is not supported by modern scientific research, and it is said that there is little evidence the remedies work other than as a placebo. But homeopathy is £40 million industry in the UK, and Boots admits that they sell homeopathic remedies because “they sell, not because they work“. M believes only science, not homeopathy or alternative medicines – so do my parents who are both pharmacists. I myself don’t mind to try anything as long as it works and safe. I also understand people who find a hope in alternative medicines if there is no other cure. Let’s see if my homeopathic remedy works for me. I bought usual cold medicine as well, in case it doesn’t work at all.

下のビデオは、これを書いている時に偶然見た、グラクソ・スミスクライン社のBeecham（ビーチャム）風邪薬のTVコマーシャル。ちなみに、去年のHSBC銀行の広告でも相撲力士が起用された。肌色を濃くして、目を切れ長に修正した白人がモデルのこの広告が、日本人に対する侮辱的だと在住日本人の間でひんしゅくを買っているとの記事があったが、私個人としては，そんなに目くじらたてる程のことでもないと思うんだけれど。多かれ少なかれ、外国人の描き方にステレオタイプが入るのは仕方ないことだし、Mも日本のバラエティ番組等で「ガイジン」が面白おかしく取り上げられているのが不愉快だと言っている。文句を言う人は、人の振り見て我が振り直せ、というところですね。

The video below is the TV commercial of Beechams, the GlaxoSmithKline owned cold and flu remedy, that I happened to see on TV while I waswriting this entry. HSBC bank also used Sumo wrestler for their advertising last year. But HSBC was under fire as the campaign uses the image of a western man whose skin tone has been darkened and that make-up has been applied that appears to narrow his eyes, and it has upset Japanese living in UK, according to the Guardian article. Personally I don’t think it is a big deal – a portrayal of a foreigner is more or less based on a stereotype, not only Japanese. M complains that some Japanese TV programs make fun of ‘Gaijin’, foreigners in Japanese. At the end of the day, I think any country does the same, or otherwise it would be very boring if everything is goody-goody.

Graffitis in My Neighborhood

アーティストたちが多く住むイーストロンドンのハックニー区にある我が家の近くには、グラフィティアート（ストリートアート）がそこかしこで見られる。有名なところでは、ステンシルを使った作品で世界的に知られるストリートアーティスト、バンクシーの「Hoodie」（フード付きスウェットを着た男：イギリスでは不良の代名詞）（写真上）。Shepherdess Walk（シェファーデス・ウォーク）を北上、Regent’s Canal（リージェンツ・カナル）にかかる橋の下にある。またバンクシー作品では、Essex Road（エセックス・ロード）にある薬局の壁に描かれた、テスコのレジ袋を国旗のように掲げて皮肉った「Pledge Your Allegiance / Very Little Helps」（忠誠の誓い/あまりためにならない（テスコのスローガン「Every Little Helps」をもじった）もある。クラーケンウェル（Clerkenwell）にある、Mが愛車のベスパを買ったバイクショップの壁面に描かれていた、時価30万ポンドの「Old Skool」は、たった£1,000で匿名のドイツ人に売られたとニュースで知った。その話をした時に、ショップのオーナーは、「購入者も壁をはがすのに大金がかかったし、誰でも持ってってくれたら良かったんだよ」と笑っていた。欲のない人だ。そのドイツ人は業者を雇い、6週間もかけて壁をはがして、持ち帰ったそうだ。

There are Graffitis here and there in our neighborhood in Hackney, East London, where many artists live. One of the famous one is “Hoodie” (photo above) by famous British graffiti artist Banksy who uses stencils to create his works. You can find it under the bridge over the Regent’s Canal, on the North of the Shepherdess Walk. Another one of Banksy’s work nearby is “Pledge Your Allegiance / Very Little Helps” on the wall of a pharmacy on Essex Road, with two children pledging allegiance to supermarket giant Tesco (the title is a parody of Tesco’s slogan, “Every Little Helps”).  “Old Skool“, worth £300,000, drawn on the wall of a motorcycle shop in Clerkenwell, where M bought his Vespa, was sold it to an anonymous German buyer for only £1,000. When we talked about it with the owner of the shop, he smiled and said “I am glad someone took the painting anyway, and he paid a lots of money for its removal, so it’s fine.” He was not greedy at all! The German hired Wall Paintings Workshop and it took 6 weeks for them to remove the painting.

一番近いのは、Prestwood Street（プレストウッド・ストリート）にある、オーストラリア生まれ・ベルリン在住のChristopher Charlie Isoeの作品（写真上）。マフィアのような男性の顔の上に、ピエロのようなメイクを施している。

The closest graffiti is Australian-born and Berlin-based Christopher Charlie Isoe‘s work on the Prestwood Street – a painting of a Mafioso-look guy with make-up of a clown on the top of his face.

二番目に近いグラフィティ（写真上）。元々はRentokil（レントキル・英ビジネスサービス企業。日本ではカルミックと提携）の事務所だった建物の壁にかかれた、アメリカ人アーティスト、David Choeの作品（敷地内の他の作品：１／２）。つい最近、彼が作品を制作している最中に通りがかったのだけれど、その時はカメラを持っていなくて写真を撮れなかった。彼のブログによると、２日かけて完成させたそう。今日通りかかった時に、ちょうど門の鍵が開いていたので、写真撮影に成功。この前には、ネズミの顔をした、黒の制服を来た警察官（？）が描かれていた（作者不明）。私は前の方が好きだな。写真を撮っておくんだった。

The second closest from us is on the wall of former-Rentokil building, painted by American artist David Choe (photo above. Other works in the same place 1/2). I passed by when he was working on it but I didn’t have my camera that day, but I was lucky today that the gate was open (usually locked) and had my camera with me. He took 2 days to finish the work, according to his blog. Before Choe’s work, there was a painting of 2 rat-face men in black (police?) uniform – I couldn’t find who did it. I prefer the previous work – I should have taken a photo of it.

私は基本的にグラフィティはあんまり好きじゃない。タギングとか、落書きや文字が書いてあるものはどれも似たり寄ったりで個性がないし、なんだかラフすぎて、ティーンエイジャー向けという感じ。でもその中では、元祖ステンシルアーティストのBlek the ratやバンクシーの作品は好き。バンクシーは時に政治メッセージが強すぎると思うけれど。また、Pizza EastやAlbionの近く、Redchurch Street（レッドチャーチ・ストリート）とClub Row（クラブ・ロウ）の角にある、ベルギー人アーティスト・Roaのリスのグラフィティ（写真下）もいい。Roaは、動物の絵をよく描いているようだけれど、同じRedchurch Streetにある豚2匹の顔はちょっと怖い。。。

To be honest, I don’t like graffiti much in general. It tends to be too busy and too much colors, and more or less it looks all the same (especially the writing). It looks too rough and edgy, and is for teenagers to me. However, I kind of like Stencils, such as the works of French Blek the rat, the godfather of stencil graffiti art, and Banksy, though I don’t like his tendency to be too political.  I also like Belgian artist Roa‘s ‘Squirrel’ (photo below), at the corner of Redchurch street and Club Row, near Pizza East and Albion. Roa seems to like to paint animals, but some of them look a bit scary, like the two pigs on top of each other on the same Redchurch street.

グラフィティは、立派なアートだと言う人もいるけれど、無許可であればそれは当然、違法行為。カウンシル（区役所）は、市民からの通報を受け付けていて、通報があれば、48時間以内に調査の上、カウンシル所有の建物に描かれたグラフィティで、不適切なものは24時間以内に、その他のものは14日以内に消去される（ハックニー区の場合）。あのバンクシーの作品の中にも消されたものがいくつかある。カウンシルも必要経費購入者もちで希望者に売って、それを区の財源にすればいいのにね。

Some say graffiti is an art, but if it is done without permission, obviously it is illegal. Borough Councils accept a report of illegal graffiti from public. Once reported, all reports of graffiti will be investigated within 48 hours, and offensive graffiti on buildings owned and run by the Council will be removed within 24 hours of a report being received, and non-offensive graffiti will be removed within 14 days (Borough of Hackney‘s case). Even some of Banksy’s works were erased or painted over due to its illegality – maybe the Councils should sell the graffitis, with removal on buyer’s expense, and get extra money to use for the community’s sake.

Botanics by Boots

今日、イギリス最大の薬局／ドラッグストアチェーンBootsから、オンラインショッピングの商品が届いた。Bootsは一時日本に出店していたこともあるので、ご存知の方も多いかと思います。お店はイギリスのメインストリートに大抵あるけれど、いつも使うものは、セールやキャンペーン時にウェブでまとめ買いをしたりする。Bootsは3 for 2 （３個購入すると２個分の値段）、Buy 1 get 1 free（２個で１個の値段）、double points（ポイント倍増）など、常にいろいろなキャンペーンをしているので、メールでの案内のチェックがかかせません。また、Advantage Cardというメンバーズカードを持っていると、£1で4ポイントもらえ、1ポイントにつき1 pence換算で買い物の際に使える。

私たちのお気に入りは、Botanicsという、植物から抽出した材料を使った自然派のストアブランド。フェイスケア、ボディケア、ヘアケア、男性用、ベビー用製品等種類も１５０種類以上と豊富。花や植物をモチーフにしたパッケージのデザインもナチュラルで、インテリアオブジェクトとしても素敵だし、お値段もリーズナブル。

I received a package from online store of Boots, a leading pharmacy chain in the United Kingdom. You can find the store in most high streets throughout the country, but sometimes I shop online when there is a sale or campaign for the products we always use. Boots has always sale and campaign such as 3 for 2, Buy 1 get 1 free, double points, so I check email subscription for the information. Royalty scheme of Boots called Advantage Card is must-item for clever shoppers. You can earn 4 points for every £1 you spend, and spend points (1 point worth 1 pence) for your shopping.

Our favorite products range is Botanics, which is a Boots store brand and use plant extracts. Its range of products is over 150, from face care, body care, haircare to men’s and baby products. The package design with flower or plant motif is nice and natural, and good as a interior object. The reasonable price is a big + as well.
