Find Cute Guys on London Tube @ TubeCrush.net

昨日、面白いウェブサイトTubeCrush.netを見つけた。このサイトは、チューブ（ロンドン地下鉄）で見つけたイケメンの写真を撮り、オンライン上でシェアするというもの。気に入った人がいたら、をクリックして投票したり、コメントを残したり、友達とシェアできるようになっている。サイトの右端には、人気ランキングも掲載。素人の盗撮？で写真の質は良くないけれど、ついつい見入ってしまう。肖像権やプライバシーの問題は？とふと疑問がわくが、TubeCrush.netによると、「our blog is an artistic expression of our appreciation of the human body（人間の体を賛美するアーティスティックな表現）」、要は「アート」なので問題ないと考えているとのこと。まあ、イケメンと言われて嫌な気分になる人はあんまりいないだろうけどね。

ちなみに魅力的な男性が一番集まっている地下鉄ラインは、私の最寄りのノーザン・ライン（Northern line）だそう。ラッキー！

I found an interesting website called TubeCrush.net today. This website let users share photographs of cute guys they encounter on London underground. If you fancy one of the guys, you can vote him by clicking , add comments, or share with your friends. If you want to know who is the most popular man, just check the column on the right on the webpage. The photos are snapshots, obviously taken very quick without being noticed,  and therefore the quality is not good, but it is really fun to browse them. The privacy issue popped up in my mind when I first saw the website, but TubeCrush.net insists that “our blog is an artistic expression of our appreciation of the human body”. Probably not many people would get upset by being spotted as hot and attractive, anyway.

The line which is populated with the most attractive men, is the Northern line. It’s my line! hurrah!!

Figures & Fictions: Contemporary South African Photography @ V&A

V&Aで4月12日から7月17日まで開催中の「Figures & Fictions: Contemporary South African Photography」を観た。この展覧会では、南アフリカに住み、活動を続ける17人の写真家によって、写真文化が花開いたアパルトヘイト終了後の2000年から2010年に撮影された作品を展示されている。

悪名高いアパルトヘイトが導入された国民党の支配下の1948年から1994年の間、写真は国家によって人種分類を管理するために利用されたが、同時に人種差別法と人種隔離政策下の人々の生活や抵抗の記録としても使われた。現代の南アフリカ人写真家は、新しく生まれ変わった南アフリカ、高い犯罪率と大きな貧富の差を内在しつつも、経済発展と強まる政治的パワーを享受する、民主的で多様な文化を持つこの国に生きる人々を写し出している。Figures & Fiction展に展示されている作品は、階級、政治、人種やジェンダー・アイデンティティ、日常生活、家族、ファッション、宗教、旧植民地としての歴史、そして弱まったとは言え未だに存在する過去の権力（＝金持ちエリート白人）など、様々な観点から現代南アフリカの姿を描きだす。

カリスマ的なネルソン・マンデラを筆頭に、自由と平等を求め、少数派の白人による抑圧と戦う多数派の黒人たちといった、ステレオタイプのイメージとは全く違った、変化の途上にある現代南アフリカの息吹を感じられる、カラフルで興味深い展覧会。

I saw an exhibition “Figures & Fictions: Contemporary South African Photography” (April 12 – July 17) at V&A. The exhibition presents the work of 17 South African photographers who live and work in the country and the photographs on display were taken between 2000 and 2010 in post- apartheid period, when vibrant and sophisticated photographic culture has emerged.

Under National Party rule from 1948 to 94 and the implementation of notorious racial segregation, photography was used by the State to manage racial classification, but also served to document resistance and record the lives of people under racial laws and social segregation. The post-Apartheid photographers depict people in ‘new’ South Africa; culturally diverse, and vibrant democratic country with emerging economic and political power, yet facing high crime rate and big gap between rich and poor. The photographs on display addresses the variety of issues that post-Apartheid South Africa facing; class, politics, racial and gender identities, everyday life of people, family, fashion, religion, colonial history, and less dominant yet still existing ‘old power’ in the society.

Colourful and interesting exhibition that you can feel vibe of modern South African in transition. Forget about stereotypical image of the country where majority black South African led by charismatic Nelson Mandela, fighting with unreasonable oppression for freedom and equality!

Shadow Catchers: Camera-less Photography @ Victoria & Albert Museum

最近始まった、ビクトリア＆アルバート博物館の「 Shadow Catchers: Camera-less Photography」展（10月13日〜2011年2月20日）は、5人の現代アーティスト（Floris Neusüss／Pierre Cordier／Susan Derges／Garry Fabian Miller／Adam Fuss）が、カメラを使わずに作り出した写真作品を集めた、ユニークな展覧会。

アーティストたちは、影を投げかけたり、光を操作したり、化学的に紙の表面を処理して、作品を作り出す。カメラを使わない写真には色々な手法があり、主なものには、印画紙の表面を直接加工して作り出すChemigram（ケミグラム）、光と印画紙の間に置いたオブジェが遮光また光の加減を弱め、その形を浮かび上がらせたりするLuminogram（ルミノグラム）、印画紙の上に直接物を置いて感光させるなどの方法により制作されたフォトグラムがある。時にはいくつかの手法を組み合わせることも。現実を記録したカメラ写真と違い、カメラを使わずに作られた作品は、どこかミステリアスで幻想的。小規模ながら興味深い展覧会だ。

V&A’s new exhibition “Shadow Catchers: Camera-less Photography” (October 13 – February 20, 2011)  is an unique show presenting the work of five contemporary artists; Floris Neusüss, Pierre Cordier, Susan Derges, Garry Fabian Miller and Adam Fuss, who work without a camera.

The artists create images on photographic paper by casting shadow and manipulating light, or by chemically treating the surface of the paper. Camera-less photographs can be made using a variety of techniques, the most common of which are the Photogram, the Luminogram and the Chemigram, and sometimes these methods are used in combination.

In compare to photographs taken by a camera, documenting reality, camera-less photographs are more enigmatic and somehow dreamlike. “Shadow Catchers” is in small scale, but fascinating and captivating.
