Red Market: Pop-Up Street Food Market @ Old Street

Old StreetとGreat Eastern Streetが枝分かれする角の空き地で、夏限定のフードマーケット・Red Marketが現在開催中。昨年は夜のみのナイト・マーケットだったこのマーケット、今年は7月6日に始まり最初の2週間は週末のみだったけれど、7月21日〜9月2日の平日は昼12時から夜11時まで終日オープンしている（土曜は午後5〜10時、日曜は休み）。

グラフィティ・アートで覆われたビルに囲まれた2万平方フィート（約1858平方メートル）の広場には、ハンバーガーやイタリア、オーストリア、ハンガリー、地中海風メゼ、ジャパニーズなど、世界のストリート・フードを売る屋台がぐるり並び、昼はランチを求める人たち、夜はフード＆ドリンクを楽しむ人々で賑わう。→写真：Time Out / Red Gallery / Zagat

クローズまで間もないけれど、折りにつけ、パラリンピックのパブリックビューイング、映画上映、ライブ・ミュージック等のイベントも開催されるので、興味がある人はマーケットのサイトを要チェック。

Pop-up street food market Red Market is currently running on an empty space where Old Street and Great Eastern Street meet. This market opened only at night last summer, but this summer it opens from 12 noon to 11pm daily on weekdays from July 21 to September 2 (Saturdays: 5-10pm, close on Sundays), though first two weeks from July 6th opened only on weekend.

There are world street food vendors such as hamburger, Austrian sandwiches, Hungarian, Mediterranean meze, and Japanese in this 20,000 ft² (=1858 m²) space, surrounded by buildings colorized with various graffiti art. The market attracts hungry stomachs looking for lunch and snacks during the day, and hip creators enjoy food & drinks at night. →photos: Time Out / Red Gallery / Zagat

Not much time left until its closing, but if you are interested, check their website for special events such as public viewing for Paralympics, film screening, and live music etc.

2010 Serpentine Gallery Pavillion by Jean Nouvel

昨日Lidoでランチをした後、7月10日から10月17日まで開催中の、The Serpentine Gallery（サーペンタイン・ギャラリー）の夏季限定パビリオンを、遅ればせながら見に行ってきた。

パビリオンの創設10周年、またサーペンタイン・ギャラリーの開設から40年を迎えた2010年のパビリオンは、フランス人建築家・ジャン・ヌーヴェルがデザイン。遠くからでも目に入る、全てが鮮やかな赤の建物で、周囲の緑とのコントラストがまぶしい。去年の、控えめで落ち着いた感じのSANAAのパビリオンと正反対で、情熱的でパワフルだ。これはフランス人と日本人の国民性の違いか？？

今秋、ヌーヴェルのイギリスにおける最初のメジャーな建築作品となるショッピング・センター「One New Change」が、セント・ポール寺院の近くにオープンするので、このパビリオンはその前の話題作りにちょうどいい。家から最寄りの大規模ショッピング・センターとなるOne New Changeの建設は、私たちにとっても嬉しいニュースで、そのオープンが待ち遠しい。

We went to see the annual Serpentine Gallery pavilion (10 July – 17 October), after having lunch at Lido yesterday.

This year is the Serpentine’s 40th Anniversary, and celebrates the 10th commission of the annual summer pavilion. The 2010 Serpentine Gallery Pavilion is designed by French architect Jean Nouvel. The entire building is rendered in a vivid red, contrasting with the surrounding green. It is passionate and powerful, and you can easily spot it from far. This is complete opposite to the last year’s quiet and modest SANAA’s pavilion. Is this because of cultural difference between French and Japanese??

This autumn, Nouvel’s first major permanent work in UK, One New Change shopping and office complex will open near St Paul’s Cathedral, and this pavilion is a good introduction before the opening. The opening of One New Change is great for us, as this will be our closest large scale shopping center.

ロンドンの電話ボックス、郵便ポスト、バスの赤を反映しているのもあるけれども、ヌーヴェルは、「夏の太陽が目を射し、瞬きをしたら、世界が真っ赤になった」時に、赤をコンセプトにすることを思いついたという（ガーディアン紙のインタビューより）。あんまり赤過ぎて、中にいると目がチカチカするけれど、何だかパワーがみなぎって、高揚した気分になる。

The red color reflects the London’s telephone boxes, post boxes and busses. But more than that, his ‘red’ concept came from “that moment,” Nouvel says, “when the summer sun catches you full in the eyes and, as you blink, the world dissolves into red” (from the Guardian’s interview with Nouvel). It is so red and flickering, but invigorating and energizing at the same time.

大胆な幾何学的フォルム、格納式の天幕、支柱なしで立つ12mの高さの傾斜壁からなる建物。

The building consists of bold geometric forms, large retractable awnings and a sloped freestanding wall that stands 12m above the lawn.

パビリオンの中は、人々がひと休みしたり、お喋りを楽しんだり、チェスに興じたりできるよう（チェス台付きのテーブルもある）、これまた真っ赤のテーブルと椅子が置いてあり、カフェ・カウンターで軽食や飲み物も買える。

The pavilion contains a large seating area, where people can relax, chat, and play chess at all-red tables and chairs. You can buy drinks and snacks at a café counter.

パビリオンの向かいには、これまた赤のフランスの伝統的屋外卓球台が置かれている。

There are traditional French outdoor table-tennis tables outside the pavilion, which are also in red.

Enjoy Street Ping-Pong in London this Summer

先週、Mがラッセル・スクウェア近くにあるショッピングセンター・Brunswick Centreから、携帯で送ってきた写真。これは、7月24日〜8月22日までの約一ヶ月間、観光地や広場、ショッピングセンター、駅などロンドンの様々な場所にに100台の卓球台が置かれ、誰でも無料でピンポンを楽しめるという、「Ping! London」というイベントの一環で、ラケットとピンポン球が備え付けてある。テート・モダン、テート・ブリテン、バービカン・センター、コベントガーデン、大英図書館、セント・パンクラス駅、ハイドパーク、リージェンツ・パーク、ロンドン自然史博物館、ヒースロー空港ターミナル3等々、多くのメジャーなスポットに設置されているので、ロンドンの住人なら目にした事があるかもしれない（設置場所はここ）。

エキセントリックな言動で有名なボリス・ジョンソン市長は、卓球王国・中国で開催された北京オリンピックの閉会式で、次回の2012年ロンドン・オリンピックのホストとして、「卓球の発祥の地・イギリスに、ピンポンが帰ってくる！」とスピーチし、話題になった（参照記事）。市長によると、卓球は、19世紀にイングランドのダイニング・テーブルで考案され、「whiff-whaff」と呼ばれていたという。後に市長の発言は、世界で最も古いスポーツ用品製造業者「Jacques London」で卓球の「創始者」一家を自認する一族の末裔に否定され、論争の的となった（参照記事）。

その真偽の程は不明だが、日の長いロンドンの夏、パブで消費したビールのカロリー分、卓球に汗流すのいいかもしれない。

M sent me the mobile photo above from Brunswick Shopping Centre near Russell Square last week. This is a part of four-week event called “Ping! London” (July 24 to August 22), that 100 ping-pong tables pop up across London’s landmarks, squares, shopping centres, estates, offices and train stations. Bats and balls are supplied, and anyone can play for free. The locations include Tate Modern, Tate Britain, Barbican Centre, Covent Garden, British Library, St. Pancras International Station, Hyde Park, Regent’s Park, Natural History Museum, and even Heathrow’s Terminal 3 – anyone who live in London may have seen it somewhere (here for all locations).

Well-known eccentric London Mayor Boris Johnson stunned UK with an astonishing speech at the Beijing Olympic closing ceremony, declaring ‘Ping pong is coming home!’, at the heart of Ping-Pong empire of the world (see details here). According to the mayor, ping-pong was invented on the dining tables of England in the 19th century, and it was called “whiff whaff”. Later his claim has been attacked by the descendants of the world’s oldest sporting and games manufacturer “Jacques London“, who claim that their Jaques family was first to codify the game (see details here).

I am not sure what is the truth, but whatever the truth, it may be a good idea to play ping-pong to shed some calories off from your body, after having a pint of beer at a pub, under long daylight during London’s short but nice summer.

Ping Pong Dim Sum Restaurant @ South Bank

今日、サウス・バンクで映画を観た後、Ping Pongという飲茶レストランに行った。インテリアはモダンでスタイリッシュなのだが（中はかなり暗いけれど）、味が今イチなので、行きたくはなかったのだが、時間は既に11時をまわっており、ここしか開いているところがなかったのだ。Ping Pongにもラスト・オーダー直前の11時25分に駆け込んだ。ロンドンは大都会にも関わらず、大概のレストランは11時で閉まってしまうので、それ以降は、ケバブぐらいしかチョイスがない。24時間営業のコンビニもないしね（南アジア系やトルコ系の食料品は24時間営業のところも少しあるけれど）。だから、コンサートに行ったり、夜遅い時間の映画を見たりする時は、気をつけないとディナーを食いはぐれてしまう。だからと言って、午後6時にディナーするのはちょっと私には早すぎる。

多くのチャイニーズ・レストランがひしめくロンドンだけれど、最近までお洒落なチャイニーズがなかったので、20代の若者を中心にPing Pong人気が広がり、今やロンドンに12店を構えるチェーンに成長した。コテコテのチャイニーズ・レストランのせっかちなサービスではなく、普通のレストランのようにゆっくりできるのはいいのだけれど、お味の方がインテリアに追いついていない。不味くはないけれど、何と言うか、冷凍餃子や焼売を電子レンジでチンしました的な味がするのだ。値段は飲茶にしては若干高めで量も少なく、特に大食漢のMの食後の満足度は低い。同じ値段払うなら、Phoenix PlaceやRoyal China等の飲茶の有名店の方が断然お得！お店は全然お洒落じゃないけれどね。

We went to Ping Pong Dim Sum restaurant after I saw a movie in the South Bank.  The restaurant is pretty modern and London-ish, but although we didn’t want to eat there because their food is quite rubbish, there was no other choice as it was after 11pm. It’s a shame that most restaurants close at 11pm in London, where there are a lot of entertainment finish late at night, and I don’t want to eat my dinner at 6pm! If you are a tourist, you must check the ending time when you go to theaters and concerts, otherwise you may miss your dinner.

There are millions of Chinese restaurants in London but there are not many chic places for trendy twentysomethings, so Ping Pong was welcomed with fascination when the first restaurant opened on Great Marlborough Street. Now it has become an established chain with 12 branches across London. I can sit and enjoy normal service at Ping Pong, which is a good thing, in compare to a ‘real’ Chinese restaurant where waiters and waitresses always annoy you with rushy service, like flying bees. But the problem is that their food is simply not good enough – it is not terrible, but it tastes like, frozen dumplings and shumai warmed up with a microwave. The price is a bit overpriced and the amount is small, so our overall satisfaction is quite low, especially for a big-eater M. If I have to pay the same price, the famous Dim Sum places like Phoenix Place and Royal China are much better than Ping Pong – though the places are typical Chinese and nothing is fancy.

The Book Club Cafe, Bar & Restaurant @ Shoreditch

東ロンドンのショーディッチのLeonard Streetに最近できた、カフェ／バー／レストラン、The  Book Club。バー／クラブ・Queen of Hoxtonと同じオーナーが経営、以前はHOMEというバーだったビクトリア時代の倉庫があった建物にある。元倉庫のレンガ壁と広々としたスペースを生かした、2階に分かれたフロアは、ビンテージ風の家具や長テーブルが置かれ、地階にはビリヤード台、1階には卓球台が置いてある小部屋もある。また、トークやワークショップ等の文化イベントも開催されており、週末等にはDJも入る（イベントスケジュールはこちら）。客層は場所柄、デザイン事務所やファッション、メディア等で働くクリエーターや、ヒップな若者が多い。Wi-Fiは無料、プライベート・ミーティングルームや映写施設もある。ちなみにイギリスでは、カフェやパブで、一般客に混じってビジネス・ミーティングをしているのをよく見かける。テーブルが小さかったり、うるさい場所でもやってるので、気が散らないのだろうかといつも思う。

オープン時間は朝8時から深夜まで（木・金・土は午前2時まで）、時間帯によって食事メニューも変わる。夜はお皿のサイズで値段が決まるユニークなシステムで、グループ用に大鍋でパスタやシチューも注文できるそうだ。私たちは遅めのランチで、スパゲティ・ミートボールと、Bangers&Mash（ソーセージとマッシュポテト）を注文。ソーセージ＆マッシュはまずまず。スパイシーなトマトソースとミートボールは美味しかったけれど、スパゲティは品質が良くなく、ゆで過ぎだったのが残念。

The Book Club is a recently opened café/Bar/Restaurant, located on Leonard Street in a former Victorian warehouse (where used to be the HOME bar) in Shoreditch, East London. Run by the same people as the Queen of Hoxton, this former warehouse with brick walls and vast 2-floor spaces is decorated with vintage-style furniture and long tables, and has a pool table and a DJ area downstairs and a ping-pong table in a small room on the corner of the ground floor. The Book Club also offers a variety of creative and cultural events as well as parties and DJ nights (event schedules are here), and attracts creative workers and hip twenty-somethings who live or work around the area. Wi-Fi is free, and you can also use private meeting rooms and screening facilities. I often see people having a business meeting in a café or a pub in UK and always wonder if they are not distracted: sometimes it is noisy and a table is too small to spread documents.

The Book Club opens all day from 8 am to midnight (until 2 am on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays), and the menu changes accordingly. In the evening, diners pay by plate size and large groups can purchase huge pots of pasta or stew. We ordered Spaghetti with Italian Meatballs and Bangers&Mash for our late lunch. Bangers&Mash is not bad, and spicy tomato sauce for the pasta was good, but disappointment was the spaghetti – it was a cheap kind and mushy + far away from al dente…
