Lichtenstein: A Retrospective @ Tate Modern

春の訪れをちょっぴり期待させる気持ちのいい陽気の今日、遠足がてら、テート・モダンで開催中の「Lichtenstein: A Retrospective」展（2月21日〜5月27日）を見に行った。ご存知の通り、ロイ・リキテンスタインはアンディ・ウォーホルとともにアメリカのポップ・アートを代表するアーティスト。広告や漫画を題材に、大胆な色使いと、手描きのBen-Day dots（印刷インクのドット／点）が特徴の作品で知られる。

「Lichtenstein: A Retrospective」展は、20年以来のリキテンスタインの大規模回顧展で、代表的作の他、Rowluxの錯覚フィルムアクリルフィルムや鉄に描かれた絵画や、セラミックや銅を用いた彫刻、初公開のドローイングやコラージュなど計125点の作品が、テーマ毎に13の展示室に展示されている。入口から順に、

1. 抽象表現主義のパロディとされるBrushstrokes（筆遣い）シリーズ
2. Look Mickey（1961）等、コミック画をベースにしたEarly Pop（初期のポップアート）
3. Tyre (1962)等をはじめとするBlack & White（白黒画）
4. Whaam! (1963)など、彼を有名にした二つの主題を描いたWar and Romance（戦争とロマンス）
5. 伝統的な芸術のテーマを独自のスタイルで描いた、Landscapes/Seascapes（風景画／海景画）
6. 1930年代のニューヨークで流行したアールデコをテーマにしたModern（モダン）シリーズ
7. 過去の芸術家の作品を模したArt about Art（アートに関するアート）
8. 過去の自身の作品を構図に組み込んだ、Artist’s Studios (1973–4) （アーティストのアトリエ）シリーズ
9. 視覚と認識をテーマとしたMirrors and Entablatures（鏡とエンタブラチュア／柱頭の上の水平部）シリーズ
10. 多彩な色の幾何学的図形を用いたPerfect/Imperfect（完成／未完成）
11. Blue Nude (1997)など、古来からのアートの一分野に挑戦的で新しいアプローチを用いたLate Nudes（後期のヌード画）
12. ラフな筆遣いと幾何学的フォルムを組み合わせた、Early Abstractions and Late Brushstrokes（初期抽象画と後期運筆）
13. 宋時代の中国画の簡潔さに影響を受けた、Chinese Landscapes（中国の風景画）シリーズ

最初の4部屋、War and Romanceまでは、リキテンスタインの鮮やかな色使いや、シンプル且つ大胆な筆致に引き込まれたのだが、それも段々食傷気味に。タイヤやノート、ラジオといった、ありきたりのオブジェや漫画をモチーフにした作品は好きだけれど、正直、テーマや主題は違えど変化の少ないスタイルに、最後の方は少々退屈してしまった。それに彼の作品は見るには楽しいけれど、底が浅いというか深みがなく、心に訴えるもの、考えさせられるものがないのだ。

Today was an unusually warm & sunny day in London, so we decided to go out and see “Lichtenstein: A Retrospective” (February 21 – May 27) exhibition at Tate Modern. As many of you already know, Roy Lichtenstein is one of the most celebrated American pop artist, together with Andy Warhol. He is renowned for his works based on advertising and comic strips, and coloured with his signature hand-painted Ben-Day dots on his painting.

This exhibition is the first full-scale retrospective of Lichtenstein in over 20 years, and brings together 125 of his paintings and sculptures with a wide range of materials, including paintings on Rowlux and steel, ceramic and brass sculptures and a selection of previously unseen drawings, collages and works on paper. Total of 13 rooms showcase his works in different themes:

1. Brushstrokes series which are usually seen as parodies of abstract expressionism
2. Early Pop with cartoon imagery such as Look Mickey (1961)
3. Black & White series including Tyre (1962)
4. War and Romance, such as Whaam! (1963), two subjects that would make him famous
5. Landscapes/Seascapes, traditional art themes in Lichtenstein style
6. Modern series inspired by NY’s art deco style in 1930s
7. Art about Art, replications of great artists of the past
8. Artist’s Studios (1973–4) which incorporated elements of his previous work
9. Mirrors and Entablatures, dealing with issues of vision and perception
10. Perfect/Imperfect, playing with geometric fields of colours
11. Late Nudes, like Blue Nude (1997), new and provocative approach to the ancient genres of art
12. Early Abstractions and Late Brushstrokes, hand-painted, loosely applied brushstrokes juxtaposed with geometric forms
13. Chinese Landscapes, his fascination with the simplicity of Chinese art of Song dynasty.

I was fascinated by Lichtenstein’s use of vivid colours and simple & bold brushstrokes at first four rooms up to War and Romance, but then I got indigestion. I like some of his works about banal objects such as notebook or radio, but I got bored of looking at his style at the end though themes and subjects are varied. His paintings are fun to look at, but they are shallow in a way and not emotional or thought-provoking….

Wilhelm Sasnal @ Whitechapel Gallery

ホワイトチャペル・ギャラリーで開催中の、Wilhelm Sasnal展（10月14日〜翌年1月1日）が、なかなか面白い。この展覧会では、ポーランド人アーティスト・Wilhelm Sasnal（ヴィルヘルム・サスナル）の、1999年以降の過去10年間に制作された70以上の作品が展示されている。

サスナルが自身の作品に「ルール」はないと言っているように、母国ポーランドの歴史や現代の歴史的事件（東北大震災を主題とした作品も→インディペンデント紙記事 photo gallery 6/18）から、家族や平凡な日常の光景の他、アート・スピーゲルマンの漫画作品「Maus」（ポーランド人は豚として描かれている。インディペンデント紙記事 photo gallery 9/18）やジョルジュ・スーラの名作アニエールの水浴からもアイデアを得るなど、そのテーマは多岐に渡る。サスナルは、インターネットやメディアの写真・画像やポップ・カルチャーのアイコンを元に、ポップアート、自然主義アート、抽象画が混在する、独自の世界を創り出す。 ガーディアン紙やインデペンデント紙の批評家が指摘するように、現在テート・モダンで回顧展が開催中のGerhard Richter（ゲルハルト・リヒター）の作品とも相似点が多い（過去のエントリー参照）。

彼の作品のトーンは、控えめで透明感がある。登場人物など、その対象のディテールは、時に省かれる。落ち着きがあって静謐な、ソフトな印象だが、その裏に、非情で悲惨な出来事が隠されている作品もある。控えめだが、力強い、心に残る展覧会だと思う。

Whitechapel Gallery‘s autumn exhibition, Wilhelm Sasnal (Oct 14 – Jan 1, 2012) is quite exciting and worth to see. This exhibition displays Polish artist Wilhelm Sasnal‘s  over 70 works of past 10-year after 1999.

Sasnal’s subjects varies from history of his native Poland and 21st-century world historic events including this years’s Japan tsunami (Independent article photo gallery 6/18) to his family (photo below: “Kacper and Anka”) and banal everyday life, as well as a comic character of “Maus” (Polish is depicted as pig in it) by Art Spiegelman (Independent article photo gallery 9/18)  and Seurat’s Bathers at Asnières – there is no ‘rule’ to his art, as the artist himself claims. He uses photographic images taken from internet and media as well as icons of pop culture, and creates his own world of art – a mixture of pop, naturalistic and abstract paintings. As the articles of the Guardian and the Independent art critiques mention, his works share some similarities with Gerhard Richter, currently shown at Tate Modern (see my past entry).

Tone of his paintings is subtle and transparent, and subjects are often impersonal without details. Its soft appearance is pleasant and relaxing, however, tragic events and meanings are depicted behind it in some of his paintings. Understated, but very powerful works.

Ed Ruscha: Fifty Years of Painting @ Hayward Gallery

アメリカ人現代美術アーティスト、エド・ルシェの50年間の作品78点を集めた回顧展「Ed Ruscha: Fifty Years of Painting」が、サウスバンク・センターにあるHayward Gallery（ヘイワード・ギャラリー）で1月10日まで開催されている。ルシェは、18歳で故郷のオクラホマシティを離れ、ロスの学校でグラフィックデザインとファインアートを学んだ後、ロサンゼルスをベースに活動を続けている。アメリカの日常生活から題材を取ったイメージと言葉（タイポグラフィー）を結合させたカラフルな作品は、時にポップアートムーブメントと結びつけられるが、概念芸術、現実主義、超現実主義等とジャンルを超えた作品を作り続ける彼自身は、安易に特定のカテゴリーに入れられるのを嫌う。

政治的メッセージの強い作品や抽象的すぎる作品等、あんまり好きじゃないものもあるけれど、印刷物、グラフィックデザイン、映画、写真への造詣を反映した、シンプルで平坦なタッチの彼の作品を集めたこの回顧展は、私の中では、今年見た展覧会の中でもトップの部類に入る。ルシェは、ありきたりの退屈な日常風景を、概念やドラマを与えることによって、生き生きと描き出す。展覧会のポスターにも使われている「Standard Station」や、「The Old Tech-Chem Building」などの産業施設を描いた作品は、ダイナミックさを与える斜線の多用、題材のまわりのゆったりとしたスペース、そしてミニマリスト的なアプローチが、印象に残る。また、映画の影響の大きい「Exit」「The End」等、80年代〜90年代初期の白黒の作品は物寂しげで心つかまれるし、これらの作品とは対照的に、「The Mountain」を代表とする近年の山をテーマに描かれた作品は、明るい空を背景に丁寧に描き込まれている山々と、山とは何の関係もない、シンプルなタイポグラフィーの組み合わせが，何故か清々しい気分にさせてくれ、心洗われる。

Hayward Gallery‘s “Ed Ruscha: Fifty Years of Painting” is the first major UK retrospective of American artist Ed Ruscha featuring 78 of his paintings, running until January 10, 2010.

Since Ruscha left Oklahoma City where he grew up at the age of 18 to study fine art and graphic design in Los Angeles, he has been based in Los Angeles. His flat but colorful paintings of common objects and use of text on his works have often linked with the Pop Art movement, but Ruscha is also considered as a conceptualist, a realist and a surrealist, though he defies such easy categorisation.

Though some of his works are not my cup of tea, such as pieces which are too political or too abstract, but this is one of my favorite exhibition of this year. Embracing his interest in printed matter, graphic design, cinema and photography, Ruscha enliven mundane everyday life objects and cityscape of Los Angeles by adding theme and drama to them. I like “Standard Station” which is one of his most known work and used for the exhibition poster, and a series of paintings of industrial facilities such as “The Old Tech-Chem Building“, with his minimalist approach to the subjects; use of diagonal lines which gives dynamic effect, and generous space around the subject. His 80’s ~ early 90’s black & white film-like somber works such as “Exit” and “The End” are moving and touching. On the contrary to these melancholic works, his recent pieces with ‘mountain’ theme including “The Mountain“, elaborately drawn mountain with beautiful blue sky and superimposed type which doesn’t have any connection to the mountain, are strangely refreshing and inspiring.
