“Art Everywhere” Public Art Event

Art Everywhereは、一般投票で選ばれたイギリスのアート作品57点のポスター22,000枚を、イギリス全土の屋外広告やバス停などに「展示」する、公共アートイベント。期間は8月12日から25日までと、残念ながら終わってしまったのだが、まだ取り外されていないポスターもあるかもしれない。イギリスの成人90％がポスターを見ると試算。資金£30,000はテートやThe Art Fund、人々からの寄付でまかなわれ、ポスターをはる場所は広告業界から提供された（詳細）。ウィリアム・ホガース、ジョン・エヴァレット・ミレー、ジョゼフ・マロード・ウィリアム・ターナー、ジェームズ・マクニール・ホイッスラー、フランシス・ベーコン、デイヴィッド・ホックニー、ピーター・ドイグ、ギャリー・ヒューム、ダミアン・ハースト、マーティン・クリードなど、古典からコンテンポラリーまで、イギリスが誇るアーティストの作品が街を彩った。

ポスターは文字通りeverywhere、そこかしこにあり、多くの人が見たとは思うが、どれぐらいの人がこのイベントのことを知っていたか疑問。私はBBCニュースでちらっと見たけれど告知も少なく、周りでこれらのポスターのことを話題にした人はいなかったし、ポスターにもイベントの詳細は書かれていない。コンセプトは面白いが、イベントが周知されていなければ人々も気にとめないだろうし、せっかく作った大量のポスターが勿体ない、とちょっと思う。

Art Everywhere is public art event, showcasing 57 British artworks selected through a public vote on 22,000 billboards, bus stops and other sites across the UK. Unfortunately it had been running from August 12–25 and now it’s over, but you may be able to spot some of them still not removed. It was estimated that 90% of the UK’s adult population would see the posters. Cost of the event £30,000 was funded by Tate, The Art Fund and a public funding campaign, and advertising industry had donated poster sites (more details). The list of artists are varied from young to old and from classic to contemporary, including William Hogarth, John Everett Millais, J. M. W. Turner, James Abbott McNeill Whistler, Francis Bacon, Peter Blake, David Hockney, Peter Doig, Michael Craig-Martin, Gary Hume, Damien Hirst, and Martin Creed (full list).

The posters were everywhere, literally. I am sure many people had seen some of those posters as well, but the I am not sure how many of them had known about the event and why the posters were there. I haven’t met anyone talking about it and there was no details about the event written on a poster, as you can see. The concept is interesting, but it is a bit of a waste if people don’t notice it.

“Who Am I ?” @ Great Sutton Street, Clerkenwell

Goswell Road（ゴスウェル・ロード）を歩いている時、Great Sutton Streetに面した建物の壁に浮き出たこの「白い顔」を発見した。

これは何？？と思って近づいてみると、下の方にポスターが貼ってある（写真下）。家に帰って、ポスターに書かれていたウェブサイトを見て、その謎が解けた。この顔のモデルは、地元クラーケンウェルの著名建築家＆ジャーナリストであるPeter Murray。サンフランシスコ出身でロンドンをベースとするアーティスト・Greg Shapterが、Domus Tilesという会社の依頼で制作した。→作品詳細とPeter Murrayのプロフィール

横から見ると何が何だか分からないけれど、少し離れた歩道に描かれた「X」の位置に立つと顔がはっきり浮かび上がる。→ 横から見た写真：Greg Shapterのウェブサイト

ちなみに顔の両面にある計5体の人形（右2体・左3体）も気になる。あれも同じアーティストの作品かしら？？

We spotted the white silhouette of a face on the side of the building on Great Sutton Street, while we are walking down Goswell Road. Who is this man??

We found a poster beneath the face when we came closer (photo below), and checked out the indicated website on the poster when we came back home to “get the answer.” This mysterious man is prominent local architect & journalist, Peter Murray, created by San Francisco born London based artist, Greg Shapter and comissioned by Domus Tiles. →details of project and who Peter Murray is

The face is fully distinguishable from a spot on the pavement marked with an ‘X’, and from the side you can’t understand what it is as the face disappear. → photos from the side：Greg Shapter’s website

I am also curious 5 human figures on both sides of the face, two on the right and three on the left. Are those also made by the same artist??

Graffiti @ Shoreditch / Brick Lane

バラク・オバマが大統領に当選した2008年選挙キャンペーンで使用され、世界的に有名になった「Hope ポスター」のデザインで知られるアメリカ人グラフィックデザイナー＆アーティスト・Shepard Fairey（シェパード・フェアリー）の作品。ブリック・レーンのOld Truman Brewery内のStolenSpaceギャラリーで、11月4日まで開催中の自身のエキシビジョン「Sound and Vision」に併せて、ショーディッチ・ハイストリートのEbor Streetに描かれた。同時に、Old Truman Brewery近くのCorbet PlaceとBateman’s Rowの２カ所にもグラフィティを残している。この作品は、「路上アートは無料であるべき」との彼の信念を表しているらしい。

American artist Shepard Fairey, whose “Hope” poster for the 2008 Barack Obama election campaign became a global sensation, created this work in Ebor Street, together with two other works in Corbet Place (near the Old Truman Brewery) and Bateman’s Row, to coincide with his exhibition “Sound and Vision” (until Nov 4) at the StolenSpace Gallery in the Old Truman Brewery. This work conveys his belief, “art should be free on the street for the public”.

Although I couldn’t find any information of this graffiti in Ely’s Yard behind Old Truman Brewery, but I believe this is a work by Abdullah Mohammed Alshehri, a Saudi street artist based in Riyadh, depicting Sarah Attar who is the first female track & field athlete covering her hair, representing Saudi Arabia in 2012 London Olympic (reference: the Guardian). Born in the US with American mother and Saudi father, Attar has dual citizenship but wanted to represent Saudi Arabia at the Olympics as a way of inspiring women.

はっきりとした情報は得られなかったけれど、Old Truman Breweryの裏のEly’s Yardにあるこのグラフィティは、恐らくサウジアラビア人ストリートアーティスト・Abdullah Mohammed Alshehriのもの。今年夏に開催されたロンドンオリンピックで、サウジアラビア初の女性陸上選手として、イスラム教の規律に則り髪を覆ったユニフォームでオリンピックスタジアムに登場し、脚光を浴びたSarah Attar選手を描いている（参照：the Guardian）。アメリカ人の母とサウジアラビア人の父のもとにアメリカで生まれた二重国籍者の彼女は、イスラム人女性を勇気づけるため、サウジアラビア代表としてオリンピック出場を望んだという。

上の「Attar」の向かいにある、「Vihls」の愛称で知られるポルトガル人ストリートアーティスト・Alexandre FartoがOrelha Negraとコラボして制作したグラフィティ。Vihlsは、壁の漆喰やコンクリートを少しずつ削っていって作品を創り出す、「Scratching the Surface」シリーズのユニークな作風で知られる（参照：BA Street Art）

ブリック・レーンにも掲げられている（写真。他の場所にもあるかも）、横のでっかい「PLEASE USE TOILETS PROVIDED（ちゃんとトイレで用を足しましょう＝その辺でしないように！）」という注意書き、すごくみっともない。。。

“Scratching the Surface” wall with a man’s face in Dray Walk at the Old Truman Gallery, is made by Alexandre Farto, a Portuguese street artist better known as Vihls, in a collaboration with Orelha Negra. You can see this in front of ‘Attar’ (above) in the same place.Vihls creates his signature works by chipping off tiny bits of plaster and concrete from walls (reference: BA Street Art).

By the way, this big “PLEASE USE TOILETS PROVIDED” signboard was put up also on Brick Lane (photo), and probably somewhere else as well nearby. It is quite embarrassing to see this here and there…

Lots of Heart Project: Thank you from Japan to the World

東日本大震災に対しての世界からの支援に、デザインの力で日本からの感謝の気持ちを伝えようという主旨のもと、3月11日にスタートした「LOTS OF HEART PROJECT（ www.lohp.jp ）」の発起人でいらっしゃる、アートディレクターの柴岡さまからご連絡をいただきました。このプロジェクトは、全世界共通でLOVEを表す「ハート」を使って、日本に愛情がたくさん集まっていることを表現したグラフィックに感謝の言葉を添え、デザインの力で世界中の方々に感謝を伝えていこうというもの。海外在住日本人の方々にも是非ご協力頂きたいとのことです。

I got an e-mail from Mr Shibaoka, an art director from Tokyo who started “Lots of Heart Project” to say thank you for lots of support from around the world for the disastrous Tohoku earthquake and Tsunami hit north-east Japan on March 11, 2011 – with power of design. This is a poster he designed in seven different languages, with lots of hearts that express many ‘love’ that has been sent to Japan from people around the world.

On behalf of the project and people in Japan, “Thank you, from Japan to the world!”

London Landscape Greeting Cards by The Art Rooms

先日、サーチ・ギャラリーに行った時に買った、グリーティング・カード（各£2.99）。ロンドンの風景のシルエットと、鮮やかな原色カラーを組み合わせた、シンプルだけど洗練されたデザインがとても素敵。このLandscapesシリーズには、ロンドンの他、ヨークシャー、スコットランド、湖水地方のものがある。作っているのは、2007年創業のThe Art Rooms社。「Inspired by the UK. Designed in the UK. Made in the UK.（イギリスにインスピレーションを受け、イギリスでデザイン。イギリス製）」を謳い、グリーティング・カード、プリント、台所用品やギフトを扱っている。同じくロンドン各地の風景を扱ったポストカードやマグカップ、テーブルマット、コースターもあり、ロンドン土産として喜ばれそう。ミュージアムショップやデザイン系雑貨を扱う店の他、オンラインストアでも買える。

These are the greeting cards (£2.99@) we purchased at the Saatchi Gallery. The design of combining a silhouette of London landscape with block of bright color is simple yet sleek. This landscapes series of greeting cards also includes Yorkshire, Scotland, and Lake district, as well as London. The The Art Rooms, which produced the greeting cards, was founded in 2007 and designs and creates greeting cards, prints kitchenware and gifts, with a concept of “Inspired by the UK. Designed in the UK. Made in the UK.” There are also postcards, bone china mugs, table mats and coasters with London’s landscapes, and those are perfect souvenirs from London.
