Curio Cabal Café @ Kingsland Road, Haggerton

Fabrica 584からキングスランドロードを南下すると、リージェンツ運河の手前に、この夏オープンしたCurio Cabalがある。シンプルでリラックスした雰囲気のこの小さなカフェ＆ギャラリースペース、La Marzoccoで淹れたMonmouth coffeeや美味しい紅茶類、品数は少ないけれどサンドイッチや日替わりスープ、ケーキ等がいただける。取り立てて何もないエリアだけど、万が一にもこの辺でカフェを探すことがあれば、ご参考に。

Going down to the south on Kingsland Road from Fabrica 584, you will see a café just opened this summer, Curio Cabal, in between Haggerston Overground station and the Regents Canal. This relaxed small café & gallery space offers a selection of sweet and savoury bites, as well as Monmouth coffee brewed with La Marzocco and a range of fine teas. It is situated in the middle of nothing, butif you happen to be there and need a decent café, just in case.

Regent’s Canal

Grain Storeでのランチの後、お天気も良かったので、 Granary Squareに面した入口からRegent’s Canal（リージェンツ運河）に入り、食後の散歩を楽しむ。

産業革命時に造られたこの運河は、イングランド北部の主要産業都市とロンドンを結び、1960年代まで140年以上に渡って、石炭や物資、建設資材などの運搬という重要な役目を果たしてきた。その役割を終えた今、運河沿いの小道（トウパス→過去の記事参照）は、ロンドンの住人が天気のいい日に散歩やサイクリングを楽しむルートとして人気だ。ロンドン北部を東西に縦断する全長13.8kmのこの運河は、西はパディントン駅の北西に位置するGrand Union Canal（バーミンガムとロンドンのテムズ川を繋ぐグランウンド・ユニオン運河）から、東はテムズ川に通じるLimehouse Basinを結ぶ（途中、Islington Tunnelで中断）。運河沿いには、西より、カラフルなナロウボートが並ぶMaida ValeのLittle Venice、リージェンツ・パーク、ロンドン動物園、セレブが多く住むお洒落なプリムローズ・ヒル、古着や個性的な商品を売るカムデンマーケット、ナイトクラブやバーが多い夜遊びの街・ホクストン、お洒落なレストランやカフェが並ぶ最近人気上昇のBroadway Market（ブロードウェィ・マーケット）、Victoria Parkなど、様々な見所が目白押し（詳細：Visit London）。

リージェンツ運河のそばに住んでいる事もあり、運河沿いを歩くのは好きなのだが、最近はあまり行かない。というのは、通勤に自転車を使う人も多く、べルをうるさいほどチリンチリン鳴らして歩行者をどかしたり、もの凄いスピードで通り抜けていく自転車もいて、心安らかな散歩がままならないからだ。道幅が狭いこのトウパス、自転車の利用を禁止してくれたら嬉しいのだけれど。

There is an entrance to Regent’s Canal in front of Granary Square, so we had a little walk toward Camden, after having lunch at Grain Store.

Built during the Industrial Revolution, Regent’s Canal played an important part in trade and brought coal, goods and building materials between London and the major industrial cities in the North of England, for over 14o years until the 1960s. Now the towpath (see my past post) on Regent’s Canal is one of the favourite route for Londoners for walk or cycling, especially when it is a nice day. The canal is 13.8 km (8.6 miles) long and runs through north London, connecting chic north-west to hip east end, from the Grand Union Canal, north-west of Paddington Basin, to the Limehouse Basin and the River Thames (interrupted small piece at Islington Tunnel). It offers a variety of attractions such as Little Venice in Maida Vale, Regent’s Park,  London Zoo, Primrose Hill, Camden Town, Hoxton, Broadway Market, Victoria Park, and more. I live nearby Regent’s Canal and like to walk the towpath, but I rarely do so because of annoying cyclists who disturb a peaceful moment, especially in the evening – ringing a bell like a fanatic to kick out pedestrians from their way and dangerously going very fast, as some people cycle to commute. But the towpath is not wide enough for both pedestrians and cyclists side by side, and I wish London would ban cyclists to use it…

The Filling Station (KXFS) @ King’s Cross

初めてこのThe Filling Station (KXFS)を見かけたのは夜だった。グリーンの大きなネオンサインと赤くライトアップされたファイバーグラスの壁が、まだ再開発途上で何もないこのエリアからKXFSを浮かび上がらせている光景は、幻想的で、不思議とノスタルジックを感じさせた。

キングスクロス駅の北、York Way（ヨークウェイ）とRegent’s Canal（リージェンツ運河）が交わる場所にある、古いガソリンスタンドを改装したKXFSは、期間限定のレストラン＆イベントスペース。約2年後、この建物は再開発の一環で、住宅に生まれ変わるらしい。 →KXFSの詳細

KXFSは今年5月にオープン。中には、ハックニーにあるトレンディなレストラン・Bistrotheque（ビストロテーク）経営者の手による「Calexican（カリフォルニアの健康オタクが好む食材とメキシコ料理が融合した造語）」レストランのShrimpy’s（シュリンピーズ）と、6月〜9月限定営業の屋外バー（KXFS forecourt bar）がある。Shrimpy’sで食事したことはないけれど、9月末で営業が終了する前に、KXFS forecourt barのピッツァを是非紹介したいと思い、このブログを書いている。ここのピッツァは、イースト・ロンドンの幾つかのウィークエンド・マーケットに出店している、Home Slice Pizzaが作っている。メニューは週変わりの3種類のピッツァ（丸ごと£9.00 / スライス£3.00）しかない。飲み物はアルコールのみ、水道水の他はミネラルウォーターもコーヒーもない。支払いは何故かクレジットカードオンリーで、現金不可。スタッフは無愛想だし、全般的にサービスがいいとは言えないんだけれど、それでもここのピッツァ・マルゲリータは食べる価値あり。

The first time I saw The Filling Station (KXFS) was at night. With the light green large neon sign and fibreglass screen lit up in red, it stood out in the dark redevelopment area on construction, next to the Regent’s Canal in the north of King’s Cross station. It was beautiful and I felt nostalgic somehow.

KXFS, converted from old gas station adjacent to York Way and the Regent’s Canal, is a temporary restaurant and event space. It is said that this structure will remain for two years before the site is redeveloped for housing. →more details of KXFS

Opened in late May, KXFS houses cozy ‘Calexican‘ restaurant Shrimpy’s, created by people behind Bistrotheque in Hackney, as well as al-fresco KXFS forecourt bar which opens  from June until the end of September. I haven’t tried Shrimpy’s, but I wanted to tell how surprisingly good pizza at KXFS forecourt bar is, before the bar close down. The pizza is prepared by Home Slice Pizza who sells pizza on some weekend markets in East London. They have only 3 kinds of pizza (£9.00@whole / £3.00@slice). Topping changes each week) at KXFS. Overall service is not really great: they oddly accept only card and no cash (so as Shrimpy’s); they have only alcoholic drinks except tap water; and staffs were not really friendly. “Diver” by Ron Haselden @ Diespeker Wharf, Regent’s Canal

エンジェルからの帰り、Regent’s Canal（リージェンツ・カナル）を歩いていた時見た光景。調べてみると、子供たちの描いた絵を元にして、アーティスト・Ron Haselden（ロン・ハーセルデン）が制作された「Diver（ダイバー）」だそうだ。これは、600人のロンドンの小学生とハーセルデンのコラボレーションで、Paddington Basin（パディントン船着き場）からオリンピック開催地まで、リージェンツ・カナル沿いのの9マイルの遊歩道を、8つのanimated light sculptures（動く光の彫刻）で飾ろうという、オリンピック・アート・プロジェクト「GAMES」の一環。ロンドンの様々な場所を、著名アーティストによる光のインスタレーションで飾ろうというプロジェクト「Art Lights London」によって制作された。残り7つのインスタレーションも随時設置される予定で、運河沿いを行き交う人々の目を楽しませてくれそう。

「Diver」は2月2日夜、飛び込みのオリンピック銀メダリストであるPeter Waterfield（ピーター・ウォーターフィールド）によって点灯、お披露目された。改装されたビクトリア時代の製材所・Diespeker Wharf横にクレーンで吊り下げられたこの作品は、今年度末まで見ることができる。暗くなってライトアップされた方が綺麗だと思うが、薄暗い運河沿いを歩くのはちょっと怖いので、夜見に行かれる方は気をつけて。

This is what I found when I was walking back on Regent’s Canal from Angel. Later I found out by googling, that it is called “Diver“, created by artist Ron Haselden from drawings by local schoolchildren. This is the first of eight animated light sculptures of an Olympic art project “GAMES”, which is an collaboration between 600 London primary school children and Haselden, and is produced by “Art Lights London“, a cultural initiative to creating a series of light installations by renowned artists. The rest of seven sculptures will be placed along 9-mile trail of Regent’s Canal from Paddington Basin to the Olympic site, and will entertain pedestrians and cyclists passing through the canal , together with “Diver“.

This light sculpture was unveiled and switched on by British Olympic silver medallist diver Peter Waterfield on February 2. You can see this work suspended from a crane at the Victorian timber mill Diespeker Wharf, until the end of this year. It must look better after dark with lights, but be careful when you walk along the dim-lighted canal at night!

2010 Angel Canal Festival @ Regent’s Canal

昨日、家のそばのRegent’s Canal（リージェンツ運河）を通りかかったら、毎年恒例のAngel Canal Festivalが行われていたので、ちょっと立ち寄ってみた。1980年代に始まったこのフェスティバルは、City Road Lock and BasinからPackington Parkの間のTowpath沿いに、慈善団体の資金集めのために食べ物や運河にちなんだ小物、工芸品、本などを売る約70の屋台が並び、Fun-fair（移動遊園地）、コンサート、Narrow Boat（ナロウボート、運河用の細長い荷役船）が体験できるボート・トリップ、そしてレガッタやボート・レースなど、一日中いろいろなイベントが開催される。

運営は主にボランティアでまかなわれ、入場料は無料。屋台からチラシまで、なんだか学園祭を思わせる手作り感満載で、よく言えばほのぼのしているというか、悪くいえば素人臭いというか。また来たくなるような魅力的なイベントとは言いがたいけれど、まあ皆頑張っているので、気持ちだけ、手作りマフィンとブラウニーを買ってフェスティバルを後にした。

屋台やイベントはともかく、イギリスの運河名物のナロウボートが結集するこのフェスティバル、興味のある人には面白いかも。£1のプチ・ボート・トリップでちょっとした運河体験をしたり、ボートを通すための閘門の開閉を見たり（写真下）、また現在は、住居や余暇の別荘、短・長期旅行用として使われていて、水洗トイレやシャワー、暖房、電化製品、衛星放送用アンテナ等も備えている、ナロウボートの中を見学できるのも、フェスティバルならでは。

Yesterday, we stopped at the annual Angel Canal Festival when we came back from lunch in Angel. This annual festival, started in 1980’s, is based around City Road Lock and Basin and along the tow path to Packington Park, and there are around 70 stalls selling from canalware and crafts, books, to refreshments, to raise funds for local and national charities. A variety of events are held all day such as fun-fair, music, boat trips and viewing of Community Boats, regatta and bell-boat race in the Basin.

The festival is run by volunteers, and an entrance is free. From the stalls to the posters and leaflets, everything about the festival was amateurish and handmade-ish, and it was like a typical community event or a high school festival. It was quite grungy in a way and it was not really attractive event that I want to come back every year, but I understand it is a non-profit local festival and the volunteers do their best. I just bought muffin and brownies, took a little stroll, and left the festival in 10 minutes.

The festival may be interesting for some, as Narrow Boats, one of the attractions in England’s canals, get together in one area. You can observe the narrow boats going through a lock gate (photo below), experience a mini boat trip with small money for £1, or observe inside of the boats that are now commonly used for holidays, weekend breaks or as permanent residences, equipped with modern convenience such as central heating, flush toilets, shower or bath, home electronics, satellite television and mobile broadband.
