New Medieval & Renaissance Galleries opens @ Victoria & Albert Museum

7年もの年月と3170万ポンドをかけてようやく完成した、ヴィクトリア&アルバート博物館（V&A）の新しいMedieval & Renaissance Galleries（中世ヨーロッパ＆ルネサンス・ギャラリー）が今日12月2日にオープンした。私は、華やかでいて素朴なタッチの、この時代のアートが好きなので、このギャラリーのオープニングを楽しみにしていた。計10室のギャラリーには、ローマ帝国の没落からルネッサンス時代の終わりまで、紀元300年から1600年頃までの美術品約1800点を展示。繊細な彫刻や本等の小さなものから、教会の内部、ステンドグラスや階段等、イングランドで作られた美術品からスペイン、フランス、ドイツ、イタリア等の芸術品まで、幅広いコレクションからは、当時のヨーロッパの芸術と文化を垣間見ることができる。ゆっくり観ていると一日がつぶれそうな、見応えたっぷりのギャラリーだ。ルネサンス時代の芸術はよく知られているけれど、文化が停滞した「暗黒時代（the dark ages）」と呼ばれる中世にも、宗教美術等を中心に、素晴らしい芸術が存在していたのだなと感心。

The Victoria & Albert museum (V&A) opens its new Medieval & Renaissance Galleries today, after spending 7 years and £31.7m of cost. I was looking for its opening, as I like lavish but realistic and simple medieval art.  The 10 galleries occupying 2 floors are filled with more than 1,800 objects from AD300 to 1600; the fall of the Roman Empire to the end of the Renaissance period. From small objects like sculptures and books to large artifacts such as church interiors, stained glasses and staircases, a wide variety of the collection range from the objects from Spain, France, Germany and Italy, to abundant works of art made in England, and it tells the story of European art and culture of the periods. You can spend many hours just looking at these beautiful masterpieces in the gallery. Renaissance art is widely known but I was impressed that magnificent artworks and crafts, especially religious art, also existed during the middles ages, often called “the Dark Ages,” – a period of cultural decline.

９月頃、まだ工事中だったギャラリーを見学する機会があった。既にいくらか展示品が置いてあったものの、まだ足場や木枠がそこら中に置いてあって、こんなに素晴らしいギャラリーに仕上がるとは全然予想できなかった。さすがV&A、イギリスを代表する美術館の一つだけあって、素晴らしいギャラリーに仕上がっている。1,800もの美術品が置かれているのに、すっきりレイアウトされていて広々としており、心が落ち着く。他の多くのイギリスの美術館・博物館のように、このギャラリーも入場料無料。Heritage Lottery Fund（歴史的建造物等の国民的遺産を保護するための、宝くじ収益金）から£975万ポンドの援助があった他は、全て寄付金でまかなわれたそうだ。さすが、芸術や歴史的遺産の保護に熱心な国民性だけある。本当に素晴らしいギャラリーなので、中世やルネッサンス美術に興味がなくても、機会があればぜひ行ってみてください！

We had a chance to observe the galleries under construction in September. There were some works already there but there are wooden frames and construction materials all over, and I never thought it would be transformed to such a magnificent and elegant galleries. That’s V&A – everything they do is always impressive! It is amazingly spacious, though the galleries contain almost 2,000 artifacts, and truly tranquil. And the admission is absolutely free (though some amount of donation is suggested), as many other British museums and galleries! Other than £9.75m grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund, the cost of making the galleries was covered by donations. It is highly recommended to visit the gallery, no matter if you are interested in Medieval & Renaissance art or not – it is spectacular, and I liked it a lot!

Baroque 1620-1800 @ Victoria & Albert Museum

「Baroque 1620-1800: Style in the Age of Magnificence」は、ヴィクトリア&アルバート博物館の春の注目の展覧会だ。パリ・ローマで花開いたバロックは、世界に影響を与えた最初のスタイルで、ヨーロッパの帝国主義とローマ・カトリック教会の拡大によって、ヨーロッパをはじめ、植民地のラテン・アメリカ、アフリカ、南アジアに広まった。展覧会は、絵画、彫刻、建築、インテリア、庭園、宗教芸術等、現地文化と融合し、富と力の極端な象徴として作られた、バロックの様々な形態の作品を展示している。バロック形式がデザインされた、深紅の壁紙で装飾された薄暗い展示室は、きらびやかで華美な作品とマッチ、ミステリアスな雰囲気を醸し出し、まるで17世紀にタイムスリップしたかのような気分にさせてくれる。展覧会は2009年4月4日〜7月19日まで開催中。

‘Baroque 1620-1800: Style in the Age of Magnificence‘ is a Victoria & Albert Museum‘s major spring exhibition. Baroque, flourished in Paris and Rome, is the first global style which spread throughout Europe, colonial Latin America, Africa, and South Asia, in the period of expanding European empires and growing power of the Roman Catholic Church. The exhibition presents various works, which is extreme displays of wealth and power of the rulers, in the form of painting, sculpture to architecture, interior decoration, garden, religious arts and theater costumes, in local tastes of adapted countries. Deep red wall paper with Baroque design in the dark exhibition rooms matches to glittering and dramatic works and creates a mysterious mood, as if I was time-tripping to the 17 century. The exhibition runs from 4 April to 19 July, 2009.
