Artigiano Espresso Bar @ Paternoster Square, St Pauls

‘tea‘というティーハウスが閉店、その場所にArtigianoエスプレッソバーがオープンした。これは紅茶大国のイギリスが、どんどんコーヒーに侵略されつつある兆しか。

ロンドンに2店、Exeterにももうすぐ開店するというArtigianoは、コーヒーの品質にこだわりを持つ、らしい。コーヒー豆は、コーンウォールにある小さな焙煎業者・Origin Coffeeから仕入れ、通常のブレンドに加え、「旬」のブレンド、そしてドリップ式コーヒーを提供。エスプレッソマシンは予想通り、カスタムペイントされたLa Marzocco Linea。手作りの「こだわり」のサンドイッチやパイ、サラダ、ケーキやペイストリー等もある。エスプレッソバーのくせに、何故か地ビールやワインの種類も豊富なのだけれど、それは商売。イギリス人の好物を知っている。

ただでさえ日照時間の短い11月、太陽光の入る1階席に座りたかったのだが生憎満席。平日3時なのにスーツ姿の人が多いが、オフィスにいなくていいのか？仕方なく少し薄暗い地下のテーブルに座ったが、心理的効果が味覚に投影されたのか、Mのゴートチーズとトマトのバゲットサンドとポテトとリーキのスープはは不味くはないが特別美味しくもなく、私のベーコンと卵のサンドイッチはハッキリ言ってハズレ。紅茶とコーヒーもどこがこだわり一杯？という感じ。

Independent coffee shop with two venues in London and one coming soon in Exeter, Artigiano says they care about quality of coffee. The coffee is sourced from Origin Coffee roaster from Cornwall. In addition to the regular coffee blend, a seasonal espresso and filter is also on offer. Espresso machine? Custom-painted La Marzocco Linea as you may predict. There serve also ‘artisan’ food  such as sandwiches, soups, pies, salads and some cakes. For some reason, another British’s favorites, craft beers & wines are available. It’s a business!

Ground floor seating is nicer with some precious sunshine in dark November, but was full with people in business suits at 3pm on weekday. They don’t have to be in the office? Downstairs is furnished in the same style, but felt more depressing for some reason. Maybe just psychological. However, this may or may not affect the taste of food and drink. M’s baguette with goat cheese and tomatoes and potato & leek soups were ok but not exciting, and my bacon and egg sandwich and were boring. Their ‘quality’ tea & coffee? Not so impressive…

Kiosk Takeaway Sandwich Shop @ King’s Cross Station

キングス・クロス駅に隣接するGreat Northern Hotelのテナントで、西側コンコース側にあるテークアウト用サンドイッチショップ・KIOSK。ヒップなデザインが目を引くこのお店は、その場でスライスしたローストターキー（七面鳥）やポーク、ソルトビーフ等をこだわりのパンに挟んだグルメサンドイッチが売り。朝11時前まではクロワッサンやマフィン、ポリッジ、そしてブレックファスト・サンドイッチと朝食用メニューがある。こだわりついでに、コーヒーもMonmouth coffeeのもの。パッケージデザインもいい感じ（ウェブ参照）。まだここのサンドイッチは食べた事がないのだけれど、もしキングス・クロス駅から電車に乗る事があれば是非一度トライしてみたい。

KIOSK, built into the ground floor of the Great Northern Hotel and opened to the Western Concourse at King’s Cross Station, is a hip take-away shop that grabbed our eyes when passing by. They sell hot roast meat sandwiches with freshly hand-carved turkey, pork or salt-beef in between artisan breads, as well as breakfast favorites such as bacon or sausage sandwiches, croissants, muffins and porridge. Monmouth coffee is also available to go. I love their package design! (see their website).I haven’t tried their ‘gourmet’ sandwiches yet, but it’s on my to-eat list if we have a chance to travel from King’s Cross station one day.

Fields Bar & Kitchen @ Lincoln’s Inn Fields, Holborn

高級サンドイッチチェーンのBenugoが、ハイドパークのSerpentine Bar & Kitchenに続いて、今年7月、また公園内に店舗をオープンさせた。それが、ホルボーン駅の裏手にあるLincoln’s Inn FieldsにできたFields Bar & Kitchen。

Fields Bar & Kitchenでは、山小屋風の店内か、公園内にあるテニスコートが見渡せる外の席で、薪釜で焼いたピッツァやお得意のサンドイッチ、サラダ等が楽しめる。天気のいい日ならテークアウトして、公園の芝生の上でピクニックするのもいい。お味の方は、チェーンだから他のBenugoの店と変わらないけれど、スーパーマーケットのお惣菜やサンドイッチよりは格段に上。

このお店に行くなら、天気のいい日がお薦め。ロンドンの暗い冬が始まる前に是非どうぞ。

Quality sandwich chain Benugo opened another restaurant venue, Fields Bar & Kitchen, in a park in July this year, after its success in Serpentine Bar & Kitchen in Hyde Park.

Fields Bar & Kitchen is located in Lincoln’s Inn Fields behind Holborn tube station. You can enjoy their wood fired pizza, sandwiches or salads as well as some sweets, either mountain lodge-like inside or outside tables overlooking tennis courts. Or you can also take away some food & drink and do a picnic in the park, if you prefer. The food is standardized and more or less like the same as other Benugo’s venues, but cannot go wrong and certainly better than supermarket’s takeaway.
This place is perfect with sun, so you better try before London’s groomy winter weather kicks in.

Curio Cabal Café @ Kingsland Road, Haggerton

Fabrica 584からキングスランドロードを南下すると、リージェンツ運河の手前に、この夏オープンしたCurio Cabalがある。シンプルでリラックスした雰囲気のこの小さなカフェ＆ギャラリースペース、La Marzoccoで淹れたMonmouth coffeeや美味しい紅茶類、品数は少ないけれどサンドイッチや日替わりスープ、ケーキ等がいただける。取り立てて何もないエリアだけど、万が一にもこの辺でカフェを探すことがあれば、ご参考に。

Going down to the south on Kingsland Road from Fabrica 584, you will see a café just opened this summer, Curio Cabal, in between Haggerston Overground station and the Regents Canal. This relaxed small café & gallery space offers a selection of sweet and savoury bites, as well as Monmouth coffee brewed with La Marzocco and a range of fine teas. It is situated in the middle of nothing, butif you happen to be there and need a decent café, just in case.

私たちがハックニーに引っ越してきた7年前、キングスランドロードやダルストンは、今とは少し違う様相だった。アフリカ産の野菜やハラールに即した肉類等を売るRidley Road Marketに象徴されるようにアフリカ人やカリブ海出身者が多いこの地区は、現在のような高層アパート群、洒落たお店やレストラン＆カフェは全くなかった。それが2年前にOverground East London線が開通した後は、地価の上がったホクストンやショーディッチに手が出ないイギリス人やヨーロッパ人の若者がじわじわと侵出し始め、彼らをターゲットにした店が増えている。→以前のブログ記事：Tin Café・Bird Café・Other Café

イタリア人が経営するFabrica 584もその一つ。この辺りにありがちな、ヴィンテージの家具やむき出しの壁や柱をそのまま活かした、カジュアルでエッジーな店内は、いかにもイーストロンドンらしい住民で賑わっている。イタリア人が得意とするのはやはり食べ物とコーヒー。ここも例外ではなく、サンドイッチは新鮮で美味しいし、コーヒーも文句なし。

When we moved in Hackney about 7 years ago, Kingsland Road and Dalston used to look quite different from now. There was no fancy apartment complex, stylish stores, hip restaurants/cafés, in this predominantly African and Caribbean neighborhood, represented by the place like Ridley Road Market selling exotic vegetables and Halal meat. Since London Overground East London line opened two years ago, young British and Europeans who can’t afford to live Hoxton and Shoreditch have gradually invaded this area, so as restaurants and cafés targeting those people. Tin Café, Bird Café, Other Café are some of them I wrote previously.

Italian-own Fabrica 584 café is another one of those. As other fellow cafés, the interior is rough, bare and edgy, and atmosphere is laid-back. What Italians are generally better than British at is food and coffee, and Fabrica 584 is not an exception. Their sandwiches were fresh and delicious, and my flat white was exactly the way I wanted (though flat white is not Italian invention).
