Esoteria Espresso Bar @ Hackney Road

オールド・ストリートの東、鞄や靴の卸売り店が並ぶHackney Road（ハックニー・ロード）にあるカフェ、Esoteria Espresso Bar。もとはTaste of Bitter Loveというカフェがあった場所に、最近オープンした。

小さなテーブルが中に4つ、外に2つあるだけの小さなカフェだけれど、カウンターと回転式ショーケースに並ぶ「homemade（自家製）」フード＆スウィーツは、なかなか本格的。 メニューにはサンドイッチやパイ類、ソーセージロール、サラダ、パンピザなどが並び、pastries（オーブンで焼いた食べ物＝ここではパイ類やソーセージロール、スコッチエッグなどを指す）にサラダを加えたセット（£6.50）もある。スウィーツ類も、ケーキ3種類にマフィン、エッグタルト、デニッシュなどもあって、選択に迷うほど。この狭い店内のどこで作ってるんだろう？？と思っていたら、近くのMarksman Pubのシェフが作っているのだとか。コーヒー豆はNude Espresso、エスプレッソ・マシンはあのLa Marzoccoと、コーヒーのお味も間違いなし。

近くにHackney City Farm（ハックニー・シティ・ファーム）があるぐらいで、フラワー・マーケットで有名な、1本南のColumbia Road（コロンビア・ロード）に比べると、冴えないHackney Roadだけれど、近くに来た時は立ち寄る価値あり。

Esoteria Espresso Bar is located on Hackney Road, east of Old street, among wholesale bags and shoes stores. It is the location, previously occupied by Taste of Bitter Love café until recently.

This teeny-tiny café with only four tables inside and two outside, surprisingly has a good variety of ‘homemade’ food and sweets, displayed in a rotating cabinet and a counter. Sandwiches, bread pizza, salads, and pastries such as pies, sausage rolls and scotch eggs are on its menu, and you can have pastry + salad set for £6.50 if you are hungry . Several kinds of cakes, muffins, egg tart, and Danish pastries are available for deserts, and it’s hard to pick one out of those good-looking stuffs. We wondered where they make all of them in such a small space, and later found out that the food is made & brought from nearby Marksman Pub. You also won’t get a bad coffee there – the golden formula of Nude Espresso‘s coffee beans + La Marzocco espresso machine cannot go wrong.

Hackney Road is rather dull and boring, with nothing around other than Hackney City Farm in compare to nearby chic Columbia Road, famous for its flower market, but it’s worth visiting Esoteria when you are around the area by chance.

ソーセージロール＋松の実、かりかりベーコン、ロケットの入ったパスタサラダのセット（£6.50）。シンプルな味付けのパスタも、さくさくの皮にホックリしたソーセージが包まれたソーセージロールも、自家製だけあって、フレッシュで美味しい。イチゴとホワイトチョコのマフィンも、しっとり＆甘さ控えめで美味。

Sausage roll + pasta salad with crispy bacon, pine nuts and rocket (£6.50). The unpretentious pasta and sausage roll were fresh and very nice, as well as strawberry and white chocolate muffin.

1 NINE 1 CAFÉ @ WHITECROSS STREET

昨日に続き、fixでランチしようと思ったらサンドイッチはほとんど売り切れ。そこで、同じくWhitecross Streetにある、新しくできた小さなカフェ、1 NINE 1に行った。店内は、白とライトグリーンですっきりとまとめられ、狭さを感じさせない。入口には瓶詰めのジャム等の食料品がきれいにディスプレイされている。店内には壁沿いにカウンター席が数席、そして外にテーブルが2つ。今は寒いので、中にもテーブルが欲しいところだけれど、ちょっとスペース的にキツいかもしれない。

そのフランス風のインテリアと裏腹に、メニューはイギリス定番のパイやスコッチエッグ、Jacket Potato（イギリス風ベークドポテト。熱々のポテトを半分に割って具をのせていただく）、そしてイギリスのカフェでよく見られる、作り置きではなく、ウィンドーの中から好みの具とパン（通常、ホワイトブレッドかブラウンブレッド）を選び、注文してから作ってくれるサンドイッチ。注文したポークパイ（£4）は、脂っこくなくパイ皮もさくっとしていて、美味しい。願わくば、マッシュポテトが添えられていたら、もっと嬉しかった。通常より少し小型のスコッチエッグ（£1.20）も、カラッと揚がっていて、マスタードのぴりっとした辛さと相まってなかなかのお味で、小腹が空いた時のおやつにぴったり。店員2人（オーナー？）もフレンドリーで楽しそうに仕事をしていて、見ているこちらも幸せな気分になった。

1 NINE 1 ： 191 Whitecross Street (at the corner of Garrett Street)

We went to fix to have lunch, but the sandwiches were mostly sold out, so we tried a small new cafe on the same Whitecross Street, 1 NINE 1. The inside is neatly decorated in white and pale green, and you don’t feel claustrophobic. Groceries are nicely decorated in a cute white country-style cupboard on the right at the entrance. There are few counter seats on the wall and two tables outside – I wish they have some tables inside as well, as now it is cold outside, but I guess there is no space for tables in this tiny space.

In contrast to its French-look, 1 NINE 1‘s menu is typical British; pies, scotch eggs, jacket potatoes (British version of baked potatoes), and make-to-order sandwiches that you often see in English style cafe – choosing ingredients from a display windows or from a menu board, and a bread (usually white or brown). The pork pie (£4) we ordered was fresh and not greasy, and pie crust was quite crispy – wish it would have been served with mash potatoes. Their scotch egg (£1.20), a bit smaller than usual, was nicely fried and had a good combination with mustard. It would be a perfect nibbles in the afternoon. Two guys at the counter (an owner/owners??) were both friendly, and seemed to enjoy working – they made my day!
