Bruno Munari: My Futurist Past @ Estorick Collection of Modern Italian Art

イズリントンにあるEstorick Collection of Modern Italian Artで12月23日まで開催中の「Bruno Munari: My Futurist Past」は、多彩な才能を発揮したイタリア人アーティスト＆デザイナー、ブルーノ・ムナーリの、初期から戦後にかけての作品を集めた展覧会。

ムナーリは、「Futurist past」と呼び自身のルーツとする、未来派ムーブメントの中でキャリアをスタート。未来派は、絵画に留まらず、モンタージュ写真、彫刻、グラフィックス、映像、アート理論など、手法や分野を超えたムナーリの作品作りにインスピレーションを与えた。彼の作品は、未来派に留まらず、構成主義、ダダイスム、シュルレアリスムなど様々なアートムーブメントの影響も見て取れる。またムナーリは、イタリア抽象芸術の発展を促し、アートとテクノロジー、創造性、機能性を融合させる「synthesis of arts（アートの統合）」を希求するため、1948年にミラノで興ったイタリアの具体芸術ムーブメント・Movimento Arte Concreta（MAC）の創立メンバーの一人でもある。

この展覧会では、工業的なモビールやオブジェ、おもちゃの猿「Zizi（ジジ）」、戦闘機や産業をテーマにしたモノクロのモンタージュ写真、ボールペンやローマ・オリンピックのポスター、カラフルな壁紙やテキスタイル・デザイン、コラージュ、絵画等々、ムナーリの大いなるクリエイティビティを反映した多種多様な作品を見る事が出来る。それらの作品は、今見てもモダンで遊び心があり、全然時代遅れになっていない。小規模だけれど、お薦めの展覧会。

“Bruno Munari: My Futurist Past” (until December 23, 2012) at Estorick Collection of Modern Italian Art in Islington, is the exhibition that traces multi-talented Italian artist and designer, Bruno Munari‘s career from its early years up to the post-war period.

Munari began his career within the Futurist movement, and the roots of his work lay in what he termed his ‘Futurist past’. The movement inspired him to work across a range of media and disciplines from painting to photomontage, sculpture, graphics, film and art theory. Yet his influences were varied, also reflecting the aesthetics and sensibilities of movements such as Constructivism, Dada and Surrealism. He was also a founding member of the Movimento Arte Concreta (MAC), the Italian movement for concrete art established in Milan in 1948. This acted as a catalyst for new developments in Italian abstraction, and aspired to bring about a ‘synthesis of arts’, demonstrating the possibility of a convergence of art and technology, creativity and functionality.

The exhibition shows us that Munari’s multi-faceted creativity in diverse works from industrial-looking mobiles and sculptures to “Zizi the Monkey” child toys, from photomontages of war planes to biro or Rome olympic posters, as well as wallpapers, textile designs, and playful collages, and colourful paintings. And his works are modern, inspiring, fun and not obsolete still now. Recommended.

Concave-convex（「凹凸」/ 1946）。金属製メッシュを使用し注意深く形成した、ムナーリの最初の空間環境作品で、イギリス初公開。

Heatherwick Studio: Designing the Extraordinary @ V&A

ヴィクトリア&アルバート博物館（V&A）で開催中の「Heatherwick Studio: Designing the Extraordinary」展（5月31日〜9月30日）は、ロンドンを拠点とするデザイン＆建築事務所Heatherwick Studio（ヘザーウィック・スタジオ）の初の大規模展。V&AのBritish design展の関連イベントで、オリンピック前後に開催される文化イベント・London 2012 Festivalの一環でもある。

Heatherwick Studioは、革新的技術と素材を用いた公共記念建造物や3次元作品で有名なイギリス人インダストリアル・デザイナー、Thomas Heatherwick（トーマス・ヘザーウィック）が1994年に設立した。かのサー・テレンス・コンランがヘザーウィックを「Leonardo da Vinci of our times（現代のレオナルド・ダ・ビンチ）」呼んだそうだが、ちょっとそれは大げさとしても、彼の作品は創造性に富み、見ていて楽しい。ただ展示室であるporter gallery（ポーター・ギャラリー）は狭すぎて、展示品は模型や写真が多いにしても、彼の作品の型破りなスケールが表現しきれていない気がする。

V&A’s “Heatherwick Studio: Designing the Extraordinary” (May 31 – September 30) is the first major solo exhibition of the work of Heatherwick Studio. It is a part of a season of events celebrating British design at the V&A and also the London 2012 Festival, a series of cultural events taken place around London Olympic 2012.

Heatherwick Studio is a London-based design and architecture studio, founded in 1994 by Thomas Heatherwick, who is an English industrial designer known for innovative use of engineering and materials in public monuments and sculptures. It is said that Sir Terence Conran called Heatherwick as the “Leonardo da Vinci of our times”. It is a bit of an exaggeration, but his works are creative and fun. The  porter gallery where the exhibition is taken place, is too small for his large scale works, even for its prototype and photos, and a bit claustrophobic.

ロンドン名物として親しまれたRoutemaster（ルートマスター）の特徴である、開放式後部プラットフォームを備えた新しい二階建てバス、「ニュー・バス・フォー・ロンドン」。現在数台が38番ルートを運行中。

“Diver” by Ron Haselden @ Diespeker Wharf, Regent’s Canal

エンジェルからの帰り、Regent’s Canal（リージェンツ・カナル）を歩いていた時見た光景。調べてみると、子供たちの描いた絵を元にして、アーティスト・Ron Haselden（ロン・ハーセルデン）が制作された「Diver（ダイバー）」だそうだ。これは、600人のロンドンの小学生とハーセルデンのコラボレーションで、Paddington Basin（パディントン船着き場）からオリンピック開催地まで、リージェンツ・カナル沿いのの9マイルの遊歩道を、8つのanimated light sculptures（動く光の彫刻）で飾ろうという、オリンピック・アート・プロジェクト「GAMES」の一環。ロンドンの様々な場所を、著名アーティストによる光のインスタレーションで飾ろうというプロジェクト「Art Lights London」によって制作された。残り7つのインスタレーションも随時設置される予定で、運河沿いを行き交う人々の目を楽しませてくれそう。

「Diver」は2月2日夜、飛び込みのオリンピック銀メダリストであるPeter Waterfield（ピーター・ウォーターフィールド）によって点灯、お披露目された。改装されたビクトリア時代の製材所・Diespeker Wharf横にクレーンで吊り下げられたこの作品は、今年度末まで見ることができる。暗くなってライトアップされた方が綺麗だと思うが、薄暗い運河沿いを歩くのはちょっと怖いので、夜見に行かれる方は気をつけて。

This is what I found when I was walking back on Regent’s Canal from Angel. Later I found out by googling, that it is called “Diver“, created by artist Ron Haselden from drawings by local schoolchildren. This is the first of eight animated light sculptures of an Olympic art project “GAMES”, which is an collaboration between 600 London primary school children and Haselden, and is produced by “Art Lights London“, a cultural initiative to creating a series of light installations by renowned artists. The rest of seven sculptures will be placed along 9-mile trail of Regent’s Canal from Paddington Basin to the Olympic site, and will entertain pedestrians and cyclists passing through the canal , together with “Diver“.

This light sculpture was unveiled and switched on by British Olympic silver medallist diver Peter Waterfield on February 2. You can see this work suspended from a crane at the Victorian timber mill Diespeker Wharf, until the end of this year. It must look better after dark with lights, but be careful when you walk along the dim-lighted canal at night!

“Miró” Exhibition @ Tate Modern

スペイン人シュルレアリスム・アーティスト、ジョアン・ミロの大規模回顧展「Miró」展（4月14日〜9月11日）が、1964年テート・ブリテンでの開催以来、約50年ぶりにテート・モダンで開かれている。

出身地のカタルーニャ地方をモチーフにした初期の作品から、アンドレ・ブルトンとの交友とシュルレアリスム運動への傾倒、勃発したスペイン内戦への不安や怒りと絶望感を反映した感情的な作品、そして原色を多用した三連祭壇画を代表とする、後期のバランスの取れた幅広い作品など、約60年に渡って、バルセロナとパリで作製された、150以上の絵画、ドローイング、彫刻、プリントが一堂に会している。

極めてラテン的で、明るく自由奔放、躍動感溢れるミロの作品は、肩の力が抜け、何だか楽しい気分にさせてくれる。人生に疲れた人にお勧め。美術館を後にする時、きっと心が少し軽くなっているはずです：）

Tate Modern‘s “Miró” exhibition, which is the first major retrospective of Spanish Surrealism artist Joan Miró in London in nearly 50 years since 1964 at Tate Britain,  just started today (April 14 – September 11).

More than 150 paintings, drawings, sculptures and prints, created in Barcelona and Paris, across the six decades of his career are gathered under one roof; from early paintings of his native Catalonia, his experimental style inspired by Surrealism and a friendship with André Masson, anxiety, anger and despair-driven works during Spanish civil war, to a rich variety of mature and balanced works at the later period including triptychs with intense colors.

Miró’s exuberant, dynamic and quite ‘Latin’ works let our hair down and gives us energy – highly recommended for people who are tired and stressed out, or who lost hope in life. I guarantee that you’ll leave the museum, feeling a bit better :)

Elephant Parade London 2010

May Day Bank Holiday（メーデー明けの月曜日。イギリスの祝日）の5月3日から始まった、Elephant Parade London 2010（エレファント・パレード・ロンドン2010）。アーティストやデザイナー、セレブたちによってペインティングを施された、実物大の赤ちゃん象260体がロンドンのあちこちに設置されている。

ロンドンの屋外でのアート・イベントとして過去最大となるエレファント・パレードは、絶滅の危機に瀕しているアジアゾウを救うためのチャリティ・イベント。ロンドンの前はオランダでも開催された。同様の慈善アート・イベントとしては、東京でも何度か行われた、2002年のCow Parade London（カウ・パレード）がある。

参加者は、デザイナーのTommy Hilfiger（トミー・ヒルフィガー）、Paul Smith（ポール・スミス）、Diane von Furstenberg（ダイアン・フォン・ファステンバーグ）、Julien MacDonald（ジュリアン・マクドナルド）、Matthew Williamson（マシュー・ウィリアムソン）、Lulu Guinness（ルル・ギネス）、アーティストのMarc Quinn（マーク・クイン）そしてSir Terence Conran（テレンス・コンラン）など。またイギリス王室の一員である、マイケル・オブ・ケント王子ご夫妻も参加されている。時には、歩き疲れた観光客や飲食の椅子代わりになったりしているけれど、これらのカラフルな子象たちは、愛嬌のある表情に可愛いポーズで、道行く人々の目を楽しませている。→もっと写真を見たい方はこちらをクリック。

6月22日までは、バッキンガム宮殿、国会議事堂前のパーラメント・スクエア、コヴェント・ガーデン、サウスバンク等、ロンドンの主な観光地の周辺に置かれるが、その後チェルシーにあるChelsea Royal Hospital（チェルシー王立病院：イギリス兵のための老人ホーム。RHSチェルシー・フラワー・ショーの会場にもなっている）に集められ、6月23日から7月2日まで一般公開。7月3日にはSotheby’s（サザビーズ）でオークションにかけられる。主催者は200万ポンドの売上を見込んでおり、その売上金は主催者のElephant Familyとアジアで活動する20のイギリスの保護団体に分配される予定。

ミニチュアの象は、デパートのSelfridgesや80 Regent St、36 Carnaby Street, and Greenwich Central Marketのお店の他、エレファント・パレードのオンラインショップで買える。

Elephant Parade London 2010 started on May 3, a May Day Bank Holiday, and 260 colorful life-size baby elephants, painted by artists, designers and celebrities, are located over central London during the event period.

Elephant Parade is a conservation campaign, similar to Cow Parade London in 2002, and aims at raising awareness of the urgent crisis faced by the endangered Asian elephant. This is London’s biggest outdoor art event on record, and the elephants have ‘paraded’ in Netherlands before London.

The participating artists include designer Tommy Hilfiger, Sir Paul Smith, Diane von Furstenberg, Julien MacDonald, Matthew Williamson, Lulu Guinness, Sir Terence Conran, and artist Marc Quinn, as well as HRH Prince and Princess Michael of Kent. Though sculptures are sometimes used as a resting point for exhausted tourists or a place to have a snack, but generally passersby appreciate these work of art, adore its cute face or gesture, or enjoy taking a picture. → For more picture, click here.

The elephants will stay at around major London landmarks including Buckingham Palace, Parliament Square, Covent Garden and the South Bank until June 22, and will be put all together in Chelsea Royal Hospital (retirement home and nursing home for British soldiers and the site of the annual Chelsea Flower Show) for public viewing from June 23 to July 2. On July 3, all of the elephants will be auctioned at Sotherby’s, aiming to raise £2 million to help the Elephant Family charity and 20 UK conservation charities working in Asia.

Mini elephants are available at Selfridges, 80 Regent St, 36 Carnaby St and Greenwich Central Market or at the elephant parade online shop.
