Salt Beef Sandwiches @ Brass Rail, Selfridges

Salt Beef（ソルトビーフ）とは、塩漬けして熟成した牛肩バラ肉をゆっくり煮て柔らかくしたもので、アメリカではコンビーフと呼ばれる。日本人は、コンビーフというと缶詰入りのものを想像するけれど、ここで言うのは缶詰ではない「フレッシュ（生）コンビーフ」で、主にユダヤ人コミュニティにあるデリなどで食べることができる。

以前Selfridgesに買い物に行った時、ソルトビーフのサンドイッチを専門とするBrass Railの前を通りかかると、人がカウンター前で列を作って注文を待っていたので、好奇心から試してみた。Brass Railでの注文の仕方は次の通り（参照：winkypedia.net）。

1. サイズを選ぶ：ハーフ（半人前）・レギュラー（１人前）・ラージ（1.5人前）、platter（大皿：肉のみ）
2. 肉を選ぶ：ソルトビーフ、牛タン、パストラミ
3. パンを選ぶ：rye（ライ麦）、wholemeal（全粒粉）、white（白パン）、Focaccia（フォカッチャ）、ベーグル
4. マスタードを選ぶ：アメリカン、フレンチ、イングリッシュ。

二人で、ソルトビーフとパストラミのレギュラーを一つずつ頼むと、肉切り職人が、塊から肉をスライスして、手際よくサンドイッチをこしらえていく。レギュラーサイズで£8.95と、サンドイッチにしては中々いいお値段で、gherkin（ピクルス）を追加すると＋£0.75となる。味の方はというと、かなり塩辛くて肉臭い。パンと一緒でも、しょっぱい後味が口に残る。Young & Foodishというウェブサイトで、ソルトビーフサンドイッチTop5に入るお店だから、多分お店に非がある訳でなく、ソルトビーフとはこんな味なのだろう。隣のカップルもかなり食べ残していたので、好き嫌いがはっきり分かれる食べ物なのだと思う。私たちは生憎ダメだったけれど。。。

Salt beef, known as “corned beef” in US, is salt-cured beef product made from beef briskets cured in brine, and is available in cities with large Jewish communities.

When we went to Selfridges for Christmas shopping, we popped in Brass Rail, specialising in salt beef sandwich where people were queuing at the counter to make an order, from curiosity. Here is how to order at Brass Rail (reference: winkypedia.net).

1. choose size: half, regular (=2 halfs), large (=3 halfs) or platter (just meat)
2. choose meat: salt beef, tongue, pastrami or mixed
3. choose bread: rye, wholemeal, white, Focaccia or Bagel
4. choose mustard: American, French or English mustard

We ordered salt beef and pastrami sandwiches, and an experienced meat carver swiftly made slices from chunks of cooked meat and created good-looking sandwiches. Regular sandwich costs £8.95 and doesn’t come cheap, and additional gherkin is +£0.75. The taste of the meat was very salty with a bit of unpleasant meaty smell. Disappointing, to be honest. It may not be the shop’s fault, as it is selected as Top5 salt beef sandwiches in London by Young & Foodish website, and I guess salt beef is just like this. A couple sitting next to us left a large portion of their sandwiches, and I would think it is a kind of food that people love or hate, like marmite. Unfortunately, we are the latter…

Yayoi Kusama x Luis Vuitton @ Selfridges

春にテート・モダンで大規模回顧展が行われた（参照エントリー）、日本の誇るアーティスト・草間彌生と、「LOUIS VUITTON」のアーティスティック・ディレクターMarc Jacobs（マーク・ジェイコブス）がコラボした、ルイ・ヴィトン ヤヨイ・クサマ コレクションを記念して、オックスフォード・ストリートの百貨店・Selfridgesのショーウィンドーが、赤や黄色のカラフルな水玉に覆われた。Selfridgesによると、ここがイギリス唯一で、これまでで最大規模のストアコラボレーションだという。メインエントランスの上部には、高さ約4m巨大ファイバーグラス製フィギュアが圧倒的な存在感を誇り（Selfridges ウェブサイト）、ショーウィンドーの中には、彼女の自作ポエム「Love Forever」をバックに、大小の草間彌生フィギュアとルイ・ヴィトン ヤヨイ・クサマ コレクションの製品が。見ているだけで目がチカチカする。そして草間さんのフィギュア、かなり怖い。。。（Selfridges ウェブサイト）

Word-renown Japanese female artist whose large scale retrospective had been hosted by Tate Modern this spring, Yayoi Kusama, and Louis Vuitton have a collaboration to create funky  Luis Vuitton and Yayoi Kusama Collection. Celebrating the collection, the windows of Selfridges on Oxford street are covered with the artist’s iconic polka dots together with her poem “Love Foerver”, as well as large & small figures of Kusama, and of course, Luis Vuitton bags and clothing. This is an UK exclusive and the largest store collaboration to date (Selfridges website). Above the main entrance of the department store, a 13-feet tall giant fibreglass statue of the artist overwhelms pedestrians (Selfridges website). Her figures look a bit scary…

The Fabergé Big Egg Hunt: The Biggest Ever Easter Egg Hunt

ある日、リージェント・ストリート近くでショーケースに入った大きな卵を見かけた。これは、「 Action for Children 」と「Elephant Family」という二つのチャリティ団体のための募金キャンペーン「The Big Egg Hunt / Faberge Big Egg Hunt」（スポンサーは宝石店のFaberge / ファベルジェ）の一環で、ロンドン各地に隠された200以上の巨大卵の一つ。ファイバーグラスで出来た高さ１mのこれらの卵は、アーティストやデザイナー、建築家、宝石細工人によって彩られた（卵のリスト）。

2010年のElephant Paradeに続き、カミラ夫人 （コーンウォール公爵夫人）の息子でフード・ライターの Tom Parker Bowles（トム・パーカー・ボウルズ）が、2011年11月にセレブリティが出席する「Eggs Faberge」スペシャル朝食会を開催したことをきっかけに、Big Egg Huntのコンセプトが誕生した。

この最大級のEaster egg hunt（イースター・エッグ探し）は、2月21日から開始。このイベントに参加すると、60もの宝石が埋め込まれた10万ポンド相当の18金の卵「Diamond Jubilee Egg」が当たるチャンスあり。参加方法は、各卵のケースに記されているキーワードをテキスト（80001）で送るだけ。1つの卵につきエントリーは1回のみなので、たくさん探せば探すほど、当たる確立は高くなる。12に分かれたzone maps（イベントマップ）はオンラインで入手可能。

展示されている卵は、「eggsclusive auctions」（exclusiveとeggをかけている）で手に入れることができる。約30の卵が3月21日のライブ・オークションにかけられ、残りはオンライン・オークションで販売される予定（4月9日まで入札受付）。オークションには手が出ないという人は、Selfridges（セルフリッジズ）デパートにあるThe Big Egg Shopで、手描きのミニチュアエッグやオイスターカード・ケース、トートバッグ、Paint-Your-Own-Egg packs（手描きキット）を買うことも出来る。売上げは全てElephant FamilyとAction for Childrenに寄付される予定。

One night, I spot a big egg in a show case on a street near Regent street. This is  is one of over 200 giant eggs hidden across London, placed by a charity fundraising campaign “The Big Egg Hunt” or the “Faberge Big Egg Hunt“, in aid of Action for Children and Elephant Family, and sponsored by the jeweller Faberge. These meter high fibreglass eggs have been created by artists, designers, architects and jewellers (list of eggs).

Following the 2010 Elephant Parade, the Big Egg Hunt was first launched in November 2011 by a son of  Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall and food writer Tom Parker Bowles, who created a special “Eggs Faberge” breakfast for the celebrities in attendance.

This largest ever Easter egg hunt launched on 21 February 2012. By participating the egg hunt, you can win an exclusive Diamond Jubilee Egg with 60 fine gems encrusted on this 18 carat gold egg, worth over £100,000! Each egg has a unique keyword at its location, and text this word to 80001 to enter (entries are open until April 3rd). 12 zone maps are available online. You can entry once for each egg, so the more eggs you find, the greater chance you will get to win the prize.

You can be the owner of one of these eggs through their “eggsclusive auctions“; around 30 of the eggs are to be auctioned on March 20, and the others are being auctioned online, with bids closing at 5pm on April 9. If you cannot afford to buy on auction, you can also get the egg goodies including hand-painted miniatures of the Big Egg Hunt eggs, Oyster wallets, tote bags, and Paint-Your-Own-Egg packs at The Big Egg Shop at Selfridges. All profit go to the charities Elephant Family and Action for Children.

これが私の見た卵。彫刻家で「Society of Wildlife Artists」会長であるHarriet Mead（ハリエット・ミード）の作品。ウェブサイトで見てみたけれど、実際の卵には、くっついてるトカゲとバッタが見えないのだけれど？？

This is what I saw. It is made by a sculptor and President of the Society of Wildlife Artists, Harriet Mead. I checked her egg on the website, but I didn’t see the lizard and glass hopper on the actual egg??

Boxing Day: Big Sale Begins!

クリスマスの翌日26日は、Boxing Day（ボクシング・デー）。イギリスでは、前日のクリスマスとともにバンク・ホリデー（国民の休日）とされている。今年はボクシング・デーは土曜日なので、振替休日として月曜日も休みとなる。クリスマス、ボクシング・デーが土・日にあたる場合は、翌月曜・火曜日が休日になる。

26日は元々「聖スティーヴンの日（St. Stephen’s Day）」で、イエス・キリストが神の子であると述べ伝えた廉でユダヤ人によって石打の刑に処された殉教者ステファノを偲ぶ日だった。イギリスでいつ頃名前が変わったか不明だが、ボクシング・デーの由来は、教会が設置した貧しい人たちのための寄付箱（box）を開ける日であったとか、昔クリスマスにも働かなければならなかった使用人に、主人が箱（box）にプレゼントとボーナスを入れ、クリスマス翌日に渡していたからだ、等の説がある。今でも、牛乳や郵便、新聞配達人等に、チップやプレゼントを配ったり、この時期に合わせてボーナスを支給したりする会社もあるそうだ。

この日は、家族が団らんしたり、上流階級では猟犬を伴って狐刈りに出かける（fox hunting）のがイギリスの伝統だが、近年では、ショッピングとスポーツの日でもある。サッカーやラグビー等の試合が組まれ、この日は遠方のチームでなく、地元同士が対戦するなわらしだ。また、1年最大のバーゲンセール開始の日でもあり、人気の店では、朝早くから行列ができる。上のビデオは、開店直後のセルフリッジズ・デパート。みんな叫ぶわ走るわ、鬼気迫るものがある。朝5時には、4000人もの人が、9時の開店を待っていたそうだ。今年も一番乗りの女性は、朝2時から並んでいたと言う、気合いの入れよう。何年か前のボクシング・デーに、セルフリッジズに行ったが、午後だったにも関わらずたくさんの人で賑わっており、人疲れして何も買えず帰って来た。

今年は、不況のせいもあり、一部の店はクリスマス前にセールを前倒しにしたり、多くの店がインターネット上で一足先にセールを行っているにも関わらず、今年のボクシング・デーは土曜日、また景気対策のために暫定的に15％に下げられていた付加価値税（VAT: Value-Added Tax）が1月1日から17.5％に戻ることもあり、空前の人混みだったそうだ。アメリカン・エクスプレスの資産によると、セール総額は30億ポンド以上にものぼると予測されている。

Boxing Day is a bank and public holiday in UK, and is traditionally celebrated on 26 December, St. Stephen’s Day, commemorates St Stephen who is the first Christian martyr or protomartyr, the day after Christmas Day. Boxing Day is on Saturday this year, so following Monday will be a public holiday. If Christmasy day is a Saturday or Sunday, then both the Monday and Tuesday may be public holidays.

The origin of its name ‘Boxing’ Day is not determined, but one theory is that December 26 was traditionally the day to open the Christmas ‘Box’ to share the contents with the poor. Another theory is that it was a day the servants had a day off from their duties and received a ‘box’ of gifts and bonus from their masters. In modern times, many families still follow this tradition, giving a present or tip to a milkman, a postman, and a news boy. Also some companies give a bonus to their employees around this time.

Traditionally Boxing Day is a time for family and for traditional fox hunting, but also is known as a day of shopping and sports. Premier League as well as the lower divisions and Rugby Football leagues hold matches on Boxing Day. Traditionally matches on Boxing Day are played against local rivals. Also it is the first day of the biggest sale season and the busiest shopping day of the year. Many shoppers wait for the store opening in a queue from early morning  to bag a bargain. Around 4,000 started queuing from 5am outside Selfridges department store. A woman at the first of the waiting line arrived the store at 2 am in the morning in freezing cold! The video above is the scene at the Selfridges department store when the door opened – people shout and run as soon as they came inside, and it is pretty horrifying. I cannot understand how much effort people can make, just for shopping. We went to Selfridges on Boxing Day few years ago. It was so crowded, even it was late afternoon, that we came back home empty handed, completely exhausted.

This year some stores started their sales before Christmas and many had already launched their sales online. But the biggest ever Boxing Day shopping spree is recorded today, because this year’s Boxing Day is on Saturday, and the current temporary 15% VAT rate will return to 17.5% on January 1st. Research by American Express suggests that more than £3 billion will be spent in the sales.

Remembering Jan Kaplický – Architect of the Future @ Design Museum

今年1月15日に71歳で亡くなった建築家、Jan Kaplický（ヤン・カプリツキー）の追悼展「Remembering Jan Kaplický – Architect of the Future」（デザイン・ミュージアム）が、昨日のエントリーの「Mariscal: Drawing Life」とともに、今週末11月1日で終わる。プラハ生まれのカプリツキー氏は、、1968年のプラハの春（旧ソ連のチェコスロヴァキアへの軍事介入）後、祖国を脱出し、イギリスに亡命。パリのポンピドゥー・センター（Centre Georges Pompidou）を共に手がけた、レンゾ・ピアノ（Renzo Piano）とリチャード・ロジャース卿（Richard Rogers）の建築事務所、ノーマン・フォスター卿のFoster and Partnersを経て、建築シンクタンクFuture Systems（フューチャー・システムズ）を主宰。生物的なフォルムと未来派ハイテクを組み合わせた、常識を覆すユニークな建築物で世界的に有名になった。代表作には、数々の賞を受賞し、バーミンガムのシンボルにもなったSelfridges（セルフリッジズ）や、宇宙船を彷彿させるロンドンのLord’s Cricket Ground（ローズ・クリケット場）のメディアセンター等がある。亡くなる前は、チェコ共和国での仕事に力を入れていた。彼の母国での最初の重要な建築物となるはずだった、国立図書館の新しい建物の国際コンペに通ったが、「Octopus（たこ）」とあだ名された、紫と緑のしみにも見える奇抜なデザインに反対意見が相次ぎ、残念ながらプロジェクトはキャンセルされた。カプリツキーは、彼がデザインした、České Budějovice（チェスケー・ブディヨヴィツェ）に建築予定だった議会とコンサートホールの完成を見届けることなく、故郷のプラハで、娘の誕生を見届けた直後、急性心不全で亡くなった。

追悼展では代表作の他にも、世に出なかった作品、彼の太陽発電の乗り物、電気自動車、ジュエリー、2階建てバス、果てはビキニデザインまで、カプリツキーの想像力と才能を余すことなく展示。SF映画に出てきそうな、彼のユニークで未来的なデザインは、模型を見ているだけでも楽しい。下の階で開催中の、建築家の「David Chipperfield: Form Matters」に比べると規模が小さいのが残念だ。

“Remembering Jan Kaplický – Architect of the Future” at Design Museum will end at the end of this week on November 1, as well as yesterday’s entry “Mariscal: Drawing Life.”

World-renowned Czech-born architect Jan Kaplický, who died on January 15 this year, escaped to London in September 1968 in the wake of the Prague Spring, the Soviet invasion of Czechoslovakia. He worked at the office of Renzo Piano and Richard Rogers, with whom he developed the design for the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris, and then joined Foster Associates, now Foster and Partners. In 1979 Kaplický set up his own architectural think tank Future Systems with David Nixon, and had created innovative and unusual architectures style that combined organic forms with high tech futurism. His major works include awards-winning Selfridges Building which became an icon of Birmingham, and spaceship look-like media center at Lord’s Cricket Ground. Kaplický began to spend more time in the Czech Republic toward the end of his life. He won the international architectural competition for the new Czech National Library building, which was to have been his first major building in his home country, but his design plan resembling a green and purple blob and nicknamed “the Octopus,” was cancelled due to the strong objections as it would “ruin Prague’s panorama.” Kaplický died with heart failure in his native Prague, just after observing his daughter’s birth, without seeing the completion of another of his project, the Congress and Concert Hall Centre in České Budějovice (Budweis), with his own eyes.

In this exhibition, you can see gifted architect and designer Kaplický’s major works as well as his stream of ideas for solar powered vehicles, electric cars, jewellery, bikinis and double-decker buses. His futuristic design, perfect for Science Fiction movies, is fun and exciting. It is a shame that the space is much smaller than another architect’s less entertaining exhibition “David Chipperfield: Form Matters” downstairs.
