Fischli/Weiss: Rock on Top of Another Rock @ Serpentine Gallery

サーペンタイン・ギャラリー夏季限定パビリオンを見に行った時、ギャラリーの入口前に、2つの大きな石が積み重なって置かれているのに気づいた。花崗岩を使った5.5mの高さのこのインスタレーション「Rock on Top of Another Rock 」（来年3月6日まで）は、スイス人アーティストのデュオ・Peter FischliとDavid Weiss、通称Fischli/Weissの初の公共スカルプチュア作品。驚きの見事なバランスを保っている。

でもこの作品、地震多発国の日本では無理だろうな。ちょっとの揺れでもバランスが崩れて上の石が落ちて、大変なことになるかもしれないし。

When we went to see the Serpentine Gallery Pavillion 2013, we noticed these two rocks in front of the gallery entrance, incredibly balanced one on top of the other. This impressive 5.5m tall installation, Rock on Top of Another Rock (until March 6, 2014), comprising two large granite boulders, is the first public sculpture by Swiss artist duo, Peter Fischli and David Weiss or simply Fischli/Weiss. It is amazing. Well done.

Coming from the earthquake-prone country, first thing came into my mind when seeing the work is, this can’t be done in Japan – the rock on the top would fall and could kill someone in case of an earthquake, even a mild one.

2013 Serpentine Gallery Pavillion by Sou Fujimoto

2013年度のサーペンタイン・ギャラリー夏季限定パビリオン（10月20日まで）をデザインしたのは、トータルで13人目、日本人3人目となる、建築家の藤本壮介氏。過去世界に名だたる建築家が手がけてきたこの栄誉ある建築プロジェクトに、41歳の最年少で抜擢された（過去ブログ参照：2009年 & 2010年）。

ジャングルジムを連想させる、直径20mmの鉄製の白い棒を格子状に組み合わせた軽量の建物は、期間中多目的スペースとして使用されている。訪れた人たちは、色々な高さに取付けられた透明なアクリル板の上に座って、読書したりお喋りしたり考えにふけったり、中にあるフォートナム＆メイソンのカフェでお茶したり、思い思いに時を過ごしている。建築家のせいではないのだけれど、日が経ちアクリル板が少し汚れていて、近くで見るより外から、しかも全体が見渡せる少し離れた場所から見る方がベター。違う角度から見ると、違った印象になるので、訪れた際は是非、ぐるりと一回りしてみて。

The annual Serpentine Gallery Pavillion 2013 (until October 20) is designed by Japanese architect Sou Fujimoto. He is the 13th in total and the 3rd Japanese architect to design this prestigious temporary architecture, and is the youngest of all at the age of 41 (reference: 2009 & 2010 articles).

This lightweight and semi-transparent latticed structure of 20mm steel poles is utilized as a multi-purpose social space. Visitors can sit down on acrylic discs of any level and enjoy reading, chatting or meditating. Or you can relax with a cup of tea or coffee at Fortnum & Mason café inside the pavillion. It’s not architect’s fault, but acrylic discs got dirty a little bit over time, and to me it looks better from outside, further enough to see the whole view. Also looking at the pavillion from different angles give you a different impression – not only see inside or from one point, but also go around (and around) when you visit.

One New Change @ Cheapside

新しいショッピング・モール「One New Change」がシティのCheapside（チープサイド）にオープンした。オープン初日の4時間で、1万2000人が訪れたという。古英語の「ceapan」が起源の「cheap」は「marketplace（市場）」を意味し、ショッピング・センター建設にうってつけの場所に思えるけれど、セント・ポール大聖堂の隣という場所柄、その建設は論議を巻き起こし、あのチャールズ皇太子も反対したという曰く付き。

2007年に取り壊された元Bank of England（イングランド銀行）跡地に建てられた、8階建て・高さ40mのガラス張りのこのビル、デザインは、今年のSerpentine Gallery（サーペンタイン・ギャラリー）の夏季限定パビリオンを設計した、フランス人建築家のJean Nouvel（ジャン・ヌーヴェル）が担当。その外見から「stealth bomber（ステルス爆撃機）」と言う愛称で呼ばれているそう。地下1階から地上2階に、TopshopやH&M、Banana Republic、Mango、そしてジェイミー・オリヴァーとアメリカ人バーベキュー・シェフ、Adam Perry-Lang共同経営のBBQレストラン「Barbecoa」など約60軒の店舗やレストラン・カフェがテナントとして入り、その上がオフィスのフロアになっている。6階はセント・ポール寺院をはじめ辺りを見渡せる広々とした展望スペースになっている。来年には、展望レストランやゴードン・ラムゼイのレストラン「Bread Street Kitchen」などもオープンする予定。

サーペンタイン・パビリオンの印象的な真っ赤な建物ではなく、外見に少しデザインの要素を含みつつも何の変哲もないショッピング・センターに仕上がっていて、少し期待外れ。でもこの不景気のせいか、モールには人も少なく、ゆっくり買い物するのにはもってこい。ロンドンのどこに行っても見かけるチェーン系のお店やレストランばかりなのが玉にキズだけれど、人混みをかき分けながらオックスフォード・ストリートで買い物しなくても、ある程度のものがここで手に入るので、このモールは私たちにとっては便利な存在だ。

On October 28th, a new shopping mall “One New Change” in Cheapside opened just next to St Paul’s Cathedral. It is said that 12,000 people visited the mall in the first 4 hours of its opening. The word “Cheapside” derives from the Old English “ceapan,” meaning “marketplace”, seems to be the perfect place for the shopping center, but its sensitive location opposite to St Paul’s caused some controversy during its planning and construction, including criticism from Prince Charles himself.

This 8-storey / 40m high glass building was constructed on the former Bank of England site which was demolished in 2007. It was designed by French Architect Jean Nouvel who also designed the 2010 Serpentine Gallery Pavilion. Around 60 shops and restaurants / cafés, such as Topshop, H&M, Banana Republic and Mango, as well as a joint-venture BBQ restaurant “Barbecoa” by Jamie Oliver and American BBQ chef Adam Perry-Lang, occupy the bottom three floors, and the rest is used as office space. There is a spacious roof terrace, overlooking St Paul’s on the 6th floor. Next year, the mall will have a roof terrace café & restaurant, as well as Gordon Ramsay‘s restaurant “Bread Street Kitchen” and few others.

On contrary to the impressive all-red Serpentine Pavilion, “One New Change” ended up in rather cold and ordinary shopping mall, though some bits of design factors included, and it is a little disappointment. Also the mall is full of chains that you can see any high street in London. However, there were not many shoppers, probably due to this recession, and I could comfortably walk around the stores. Overall, the opening of the “One New Change” is good for us, so that we don’t have to necessarily go all the way to Oxford Street to shop, without pushing and bumping other shoppers to reach what we want.

Diana, Princess of Wales Memorial Fountain @ Hyde Park

前々回の続き。ハイドバークの南西でサーペンタイン・レイクの南に位置する、ダイアナ妃記念噴水（Diana, Princess of Wales Memorial Fountain）。先日書いたLido Café Barの隣で、サーペンタイン・ギャラリーにもほど近い。故ダイアナ妃の精神と子供たちへの愛を表現したというこの噴水は、アメリカ人ランドスケープ・アーティスト、Kathryn Gustafson（キャスリン・グスタフソン）がデザイン、3600万ポンドをかけて建設され、2004年7月6日にエリザベス女王によってオープンした。50m x 80mの大きな楕円形のこの記念噴水、噴水というより、小川という趣。片側はさざ波をたてて穏やかに流れ、もう片側は段差やカーブをつけることでよりダイナミックな流れになっており、両側で、故ダイアナ妃の幸せな日々と後年の激動の日々を、それぞれ表しているという。

記念噴水は、オープン直後に水の中で滑って怪我人が出たことで、しばらく閉鎖。安全対策が加えられ、2004年8月に再オープンした。現在は、子供たちが噴水の中に入ることが許されており、私たちが訪れた曇って肌寒い日でも、親子連れで賑わい、子供たちが元気に水遊びをしていた。

Continuation to Lido Café Bar and Serpentine Gallery Pavilion. Located in the southwest corner of Hyde Park and south of the Serpentine Lake, next to Lido Café Bar and a stone away from Serpentine Gallery Pavilion, the Diana, Princess of Wales Memorial Fountain is a memorial to Diana, Princess of Wales. It was designed to express Diana’s spirit and love of children by Kathryn Gustafson, an American landscape artist, and cost £3.6 million, and was officially opened on 6 July 2004 by Queen Elizabeth II. The fountain with the form of a large, oval stream bed about 50 by 80 m (165 by 260 feet),  is more like a creek, rather than a fountain. The two sides, one with smooth stream bed and gentle ripples, and the other with more dynamic water flow through a variety of steps, rills, curves, and other shapes, were intended to show the two sides of Diana’s life; happy times and turmoil.

The fountain was closed, shortly after its opening and three injuries caused by slipping in the water, and it reopened in August 2004 after adding some safety measures. Now children can play in the flowing water again, and many kids enjoyed the fountain, even on the cloudy and chilly day we visited.

2010 Serpentine Gallery Pavillion by Jean Nouvel

昨日Lidoでランチをした後、7月10日から10月17日まで開催中の、The Serpentine Gallery（サーペンタイン・ギャラリー）の夏季限定パビリオンを、遅ればせながら見に行ってきた。

パビリオンの創設10周年、またサーペンタイン・ギャラリーの開設から40年を迎えた2010年のパビリオンは、フランス人建築家・ジャン・ヌーヴェルがデザイン。遠くからでも目に入る、全てが鮮やかな赤の建物で、周囲の緑とのコントラストがまぶしい。去年の、控えめで落ち着いた感じのSANAAのパビリオンと正反対で、情熱的でパワフルだ。これはフランス人と日本人の国民性の違いか？？

今秋、ヌーヴェルのイギリスにおける最初のメジャーな建築作品となるショッピング・センター「One New Change」が、セント・ポール寺院の近くにオープンするので、このパビリオンはその前の話題作りにちょうどいい。家から最寄りの大規模ショッピング・センターとなるOne New Changeの建設は、私たちにとっても嬉しいニュースで、そのオープンが待ち遠しい。

We went to see the annual Serpentine Gallery pavilion (10 July – 17 October), after having lunch at Lido yesterday.

This year is the Serpentine’s 40th Anniversary, and celebrates the 10th commission of the annual summer pavilion. The 2010 Serpentine Gallery Pavilion is designed by French architect Jean Nouvel. The entire building is rendered in a vivid red, contrasting with the surrounding green. It is passionate and powerful, and you can easily spot it from far. This is complete opposite to the last year’s quiet and modest SANAA’s pavilion. Is this because of cultural difference between French and Japanese??

This autumn, Nouvel’s first major permanent work in UK, One New Change shopping and office complex will open near St Paul’s Cathedral, and this pavilion is a good introduction before the opening. The opening of One New Change is great for us, as this will be our closest large scale shopping center.

ロンドンの電話ボックス、郵便ポスト、バスの赤を反映しているのもあるけれども、ヌーヴェルは、「夏の太陽が目を射し、瞬きをしたら、世界が真っ赤になった」時に、赤をコンセプトにすることを思いついたという（ガーディアン紙のインタビューより）。あんまり赤過ぎて、中にいると目がチカチカするけれど、何だかパワーがみなぎって、高揚した気分になる。

The red color reflects the London’s telephone boxes, post boxes and busses. But more than that, his ‘red’ concept came from “that moment,” Nouvel says, “when the summer sun catches you full in the eyes and, as you blink, the world dissolves into red” (from the Guardian’s interview with Nouvel). It is so red and flickering, but invigorating and energizing at the same time.

大胆な幾何学的フォルム、格納式の天幕、支柱なしで立つ12mの高さの傾斜壁からなる建物。

The building consists of bold geometric forms, large retractable awnings and a sloped freestanding wall that stands 12m above the lawn.

パビリオンの中は、人々がひと休みしたり、お喋りを楽しんだり、チェスに興じたりできるよう（チェス台付きのテーブルもある）、これまた真っ赤のテーブルと椅子が置いてあり、カフェ・カウンターで軽食や飲み物も買える。

The pavilion contains a large seating area, where people can relax, chat, and play chess at all-red tables and chairs. You can buy drinks and snacks at a café counter.

パビリオンの向かいには、これまた赤のフランスの伝統的屋外卓球台が置かれている。

There are traditional French outdoor table-tennis tables outside the pavilion, which are also in red.
