Grand Opening of Westfield Stratford City: the Biggest Shopping Centre in Europe

2012年オリンピック・パークの横に建設されていた、ヨーロッパ最大となるショッピングセンター、Westfield Stratford City（ウェストフィールド・ストラットフォード・シティ）が、今日オープンした。その初日には、開店特別割引を求めて1万人以上の人々が来店、何人かは一番乗りを目指して20時間も行列を作って待っていたそうだ。ロンドン市長ボリス・ジョンソンやオーストラリア資本のWestfield group関係者によるお決まりのテープカットで開店。オープニングイベントとして、元プッシーキャット・ドールズのリードシンガーでF1ドライバーのルイス・ハミルトンの彼女、ニコール・シャージンガーのパフォーマンスが行われた。→ 写真や詳細はこちら： Telegraph | Daily Mail | the Sun

Shepherd’s Bush（シェファーズ・ブッシュ）のWestfield London（オープン３年経ってもまだ行ったことがないけど）に続いて出来たこのショッピングセンター、総工費は約14.5億ポンド。サッカー場約25つ分の190万平方フィート（約17万6516平方メートル）の広さを誇り、John Lewis（ジョン・ルイス）やMarks and Spencer（マークス＆スペンサー）の2大デパートを含む300以上のショップ、飲食店約70軒、ホテル3軒、14スクリーンある映画館、ボーリング場、そしてイギリス最大のカジノ（カジノがイギリスで合法だと知らなかった）がテナントとして入っている。まだオープンしていない店舗もちらほら見えるけれど、クリスマスまでには全て開店する予定。来年のオリンピックの大きな目玉の一つになると期待されている。このショッピングセンターの開店に伴い、店員1万人を含む約1万8000の仕事が創り出され、そのうち約20％の仕事は地元の失業者に割り当てられたそうだ。

この華々しい巨大ショッピングセンターのオープンは、IOCがどれだけ美辞麗句を並べ立てようが、オリンピックが大ビジネスであることを思い出させる。オリンピックを主催するには、何と言っても投資とお金が必要で、貧乏国には無理。その証拠に、2004年のホスト国ギリシャが巨額のローンを抱えて、破綻寸前のはご存知の通り。別に商業主義を批判している訳じゃないし、お金を出すならリターンを求めるのは仕方ないことだと思うけれど、オリンピズムなど白々しい理想論を掲げて、誤摩化さなくてもいいんじゃないかと思う。どうせ皆知ってるんだし。

The Europe’s biggest shopping centre, Westfield Stratford City located next to the 2012 Olympic park in east London, opened its door to the public today. Over 10,000 shoppers, some queued for up to 20 hours, flowed in the shopping centre to grab a bargain with Day One special discounts, and enjoyed a performance by Nicole Scherzinger, the former singer of the Pussycat Dolls and girlfriend of F-1 driver Lewis Hamilton, as well as less excited ceremony of cutting ribbon by London mayor Boris Johnson, together with gangs of the Australian Westfield group. It will be one of the big attraction for visitors to next summer’s Olympics. → See photos & details: Telegraph | Daily Mail | the Sun

A sister mall of Westfield London in Shepherd’s Bush (I still haven’t never been after 3 years of opening!), this £1.45 billion & 1.9 million ft² (=about 25 football pitches!) shopping centre houses more than 300 stores, including John Lewis and Marks and Spencer occupying large areas of the mall,  70 restaurants, a 14-screen cinema, three hotels, a bowling alley and the UK’s largest casino (I didn’t know that casino is legal in UK). However, some retail spaces are still unopened but are expected to open before Christmas. It is estimated that the centre has created around 18,000 permanent jobs including 10,000 in shops, about 20% of which went to the local long-term unemployed.

This event is another reminder for me that the Olympic is all (at least big part of it, if not all) about business, no matter what idealistic and pompous words IOC uses. You need investment and money to host the Games and poor countries cannot afford to. And whoever pay for it wants share. Greece couldn’t afford it but hosted it with huge loans, and has gone bust. I am not complaining or rather understand the system, but I just don’t like hypocrisy to disguise the commercialism – everyone knows it already!

Olympic Park in Strattford: ES Magazine

ロンドンの無料夕刊紙・イブニングスタンダード紙に毎金曜日ついてくるライフスタイル・マガジン・ES magazineに、2012年ロンドンオリンピックの競技会場となるオリンピック・パークの現在の建設状況を撮影した写真が掲載された。ギリギリまで完成が危ぶまれたアテネオリンピックと比べ、順調に建設が進んでいるようだ。

25億ポンドをかけてロンドン東部のStratford（ストラトフォード）の500エーカーのオリンピック用地に建設中のオリンピック・パークは、総観客席数10万を誇り、敷地内にはヨーロッパ最大のショッピングセンター「Westfield」もオープンする。オリンピック・スタジアムは、2014-15年シーズンより、プレミアリーグのウェストハム・ユナイテッドのホームスタジアムとして使用される予定。建設費3億ポンドのアクアティクス・センターは、世界的建築家のザハ・ハディッドがデザイン。アニッシュ・カプーアがデザインした高さ115mの展望タワー「Arcelormittal Orbit」は、イギリスで最も金持ちの、ミッタル・スチールCEO・ラクシュミー・ミッタルが、1910万ポンドの総工費のうち1600万ポンドを支払うとのこと。太っ腹！大ロンドン庁によると、ジェットコースターの赤いレールが絡まってしまったようなこの奇妙な形のタワー展望台から、オリンピックパーク全体とロンドンのスカイラインが見渡せるという。

I saw the photos of Olympic Park, currently on construction in Stratford in east London, on  ES, a lifestyle magazine which comes with London’s free evening paper Evening Standard on Fridays. The construction seems to be going well, in compare to Athens Olympic, with its construction of the olympic facilities were finished just few seconds before the inauguration.

£2.5 billion is spent for this new sporting complex with 100,000 seats that will host 2012 London Summer Olympics, and the largest shopping centre in Europe, Westfield is due to open in the 500-acre site. £500 million Olympic Stadium will be taken over by West Ham United from the 2014-15 football season. £300 million Aquatics Centre is designed by world-renown architect Zaha Hadid. Anish Kapoor-designed 115 metre-tall observation tower “Arcelormittal Orbit” is funded mostly (up to £16 million of the £19.1 million project) by Britain’s richest man Lakshmi Mittal, chairman of the ArcelorMittal steel. This steel tower, looking like twisted red jet coaster rails, will offer “unparalleled views of the entire Olympic Park and London’s skyline”, according to the Greater London Authority.

One New Change @ Cheapside

新しいショッピング・モール「One New Change」がシティのCheapside（チープサイド）にオープンした。オープン初日の4時間で、1万2000人が訪れたという。古英語の「ceapan」が起源の「cheap」は「marketplace（市場）」を意味し、ショッピング・センター建設にうってつけの場所に思えるけれど、セント・ポール大聖堂の隣という場所柄、その建設は論議を巻き起こし、あのチャールズ皇太子も反対したという曰く付き。

2007年に取り壊された元Bank of England（イングランド銀行）跡地に建てられた、8階建て・高さ40mのガラス張りのこのビル、デザインは、今年のSerpentine Gallery（サーペンタイン・ギャラリー）の夏季限定パビリオンを設計した、フランス人建築家のJean Nouvel（ジャン・ヌーヴェル）が担当。その外見から「stealth bomber（ステルス爆撃機）」と言う愛称で呼ばれているそう。地下1階から地上2階に、TopshopやH&M、Banana Republic、Mango、そしてジェイミー・オリヴァーとアメリカ人バーベキュー・シェフ、Adam Perry-Lang共同経営のBBQレストラン「Barbecoa」など約60軒の店舗やレストラン・カフェがテナントとして入り、その上がオフィスのフロアになっている。6階はセント・ポール寺院をはじめ辺りを見渡せる広々とした展望スペースになっている。来年には、展望レストランやゴードン・ラムゼイのレストラン「Bread Street Kitchen」などもオープンする予定。

サーペンタイン・パビリオンの印象的な真っ赤な建物ではなく、外見に少しデザインの要素を含みつつも何の変哲もないショッピング・センターに仕上がっていて、少し期待外れ。でもこの不景気のせいか、モールには人も少なく、ゆっくり買い物するのにはもってこい。ロンドンのどこに行っても見かけるチェーン系のお店やレストランばかりなのが玉にキズだけれど、人混みをかき分けながらオックスフォード・ストリートで買い物しなくても、ある程度のものがここで手に入るので、このモールは私たちにとっては便利な存在だ。

On October 28th, a new shopping mall “One New Change” in Cheapside opened just next to St Paul’s Cathedral. It is said that 12,000 people visited the mall in the first 4 hours of its opening. The word “Cheapside” derives from the Old English “ceapan,” meaning “marketplace”, seems to be the perfect place for the shopping center, but its sensitive location opposite to St Paul’s caused some controversy during its planning and construction, including criticism from Prince Charles himself.

This 8-storey / 40m high glass building was constructed on the former Bank of England site which was demolished in 2007. It was designed by French Architect Jean Nouvel who also designed the 2010 Serpentine Gallery Pavilion. Around 60 shops and restaurants / cafés, such as Topshop, H&M, Banana Republic and Mango, as well as a joint-venture BBQ restaurant “Barbecoa” by Jamie Oliver and American BBQ chef Adam Perry-Lang, occupy the bottom three floors, and the rest is used as office space. There is a spacious roof terrace, overlooking St Paul’s on the 6th floor. Next year, the mall will have a roof terrace café & restaurant, as well as Gordon Ramsay‘s restaurant “Bread Street Kitchen” and few others.

On contrary to the impressive all-red Serpentine Pavilion, “One New Change” ended up in rather cold and ordinary shopping mall, though some bits of design factors included, and it is a little disappointment. Also the mall is full of chains that you can see any high street in London. However, there were not many shoppers, probably due to this recession, and I could comfortably walk around the stores. Overall, the opening of the “One New Change” is good for us, so that we don’t have to necessarily go all the way to Oxford Street to shop, without pushing and bumping other shoppers to reach what we want.

Kitchen Italia @ Covent Garden

Westfield shopping centre（ウェストフィールド：ヨーロッパ最大の都市型ショッピングセンター）に続き、コベントガーデンに最近オープンした、Kitchen Italia（キッチン・イタリア）の2号店。HushやVillandryなどを経営する、元弁護士のJamie Barberがオーナーだ。入口はちょっとケバケバしいけれど、Wagamamaを思わせる長テーブルが何列か置かれた、カジュアルだけれどスタイリッシュな店内は、広々としていて明るい感じ。あのPizza Eastを手がけたのと同じ人物が内装を担当したそうだ。私たちは午後遅めに行ったのだけれど、出る頃にはすでに、シアターに行く前に食事に来た人たちが席を埋めつつあった。開店時間は、朝11時から夜11時半（日曜は10時半まで）。観劇の後でも食事できるよう、11時で閉まってしまう通常のレストランより少し遅くまで開いている。

キッチン・イタリアのフレッシュなパスタは手作りで、ピザは炭火で焼かれる。値段もリーズナブルで、パスタなどは全て10ポンド以下。メインはあまり種類はないけれど、炭火焼のステーキやチキンが£12.95でいただける。サイドディッシュもいろいろあるけれど、野菜類が少なく、ピザやフォカッチャ、ブレッドスティックなど炭水化物系が多くて、パスタと一緒に頂くにはちょっと重いかも。この日、私はカルボナーラ、Mはフレッシュトマトのパスタを注文。カジュアルイタリアンにしては、なかなか美味しい。カルボナーラも、生クリームを使った亜流ではなく、卵、パルメザンチーズ、パンチェッタ（ベーコン）を使った、正統派レシピだ。食後のカプチーノとエスプレッソに、一口大のイタリア製アイスクリームがついていたのも気が利いている。

ロンドンにイタリアンは数あるけれど、安っぽいインテリアの、ステレオタイプのイタリアン・トラットリアか、高級イタリアンが幅を利かせる中で、ついに、おいしいイタリアンを気軽に、かつ洗練された場所でいただけるレストランが、ロンドンの中心部に出来たのが嬉しい。

After the original in Westfield shopping centre, the second Kitchen Italia just opened in Covent Garden. The owner, Jamie Barber, is an ex-lawyer and also owns Hush and Villandry restaurants. Although the entrance is a bit flashy with bright electric signage, the interior is casual but stylish with Wagamama-ish wooden long tables, created by the same person who did Pizza East, and the place is spacious and bright. We went there late afternoon, but when we left, there were already many people coming for pre-theater dinner. The opening hour is 11am – 11.30pm (10:30pm on Sundays). It opens a bit longer than usual restaurants that close at 11pm, so that people can have late dinner without rush after the musicals or shows.

Kitchen Italia’s pastas are handmade and fresh, and pizzas are char-grilled. The price is quite reasonable – a variety of pastas are all below £10, and mains such as chargrilled thin steak and chicken are under £13, though not much choice. There are many side dishes on the menu, but not much vegetables and quite a lot of carbohydrates such as pizzas, foccacia, and bread stick, which are a bit too heavy for a stomach to have with pastas. On the day, I ordered spaghetti alla carbonara and M had fresh tomato spaghetti, and these dishes were quite good as in a casual Italian restaurant. Their carbonara is not a cheat with cream but with eggs, parmesan cheese and pancetta (Italian bacon), as in the traditional recipe. It was a good gesture of them to give us a small ice cream in a cute package, with cappuccino and espresso after meal.

There are numerous Italian restaurants in London, I am glad that finally casual but chic Italian place comes out, other than stereotypical cheap trattorias with red and white table cloths or posh Italian that charge you hundreds.

Brunswick Centre @ Russell Square

私たちが時折出没する、BloomsburyにあるBrunswick Centre（ブランズウィック・センター）。以前、Renoir Cinemaのエントリーでも書いたけれど、Brunswick Centreは、60年代にデザインされ1976年に完成した、モダニズム建築の集合住宅と商業施設コンプレックスで、老朽化による改築工事の後、2006年に再オープンした。ここにテナントで入っているのはチェーン店ばかりだけれど、便利なのでつい来てしまう。バイクの無料駐車場はすぐ横にあるし、最低限必要なものは取りあえずここで揃う。私たちの行動パターンとしては、到着後はまずランチ。Gourmet Burger Kitchen（GBK・過去のエントリー参照）でハンバーガーか、Carluccio’sでパスタ、またはカフェ・チェーンにしてはちょっと気が利いてるApostrophあたりでサンドイッチ、というチョイスの中から、その時の気分で選ぶ。その後はドラッグストアチェーンのSuperdrugやBootsをチェック。ビタミンや健康食品はHolland & Barrett、キッチン用品やキャンドルはButlersで、そして暇な時は、French Connection（FCUK）やBenettonにも足を止めたりする。見たい映画がある時はRenoir Cinemaへ。平日夕方頃なら、Russell Square（ラッセル・スクウェア）駅に行って、無料紙のEvening Standardをピックアップする。そして締めくくりは、スーパーのウェイトローズでお買い物。という感じ。

メキシコのテオティワカン遺跡を少し彷彿させる（私だけ??）、上部の階段状の集合住宅、窓が大きくせり出していて、冬は寒気が入ってきて寒そうだし、夏は温室効果で暑いんじゃないかと想像しているのだが、どなたかここの住み心地、知りませんか？

The Brunswick Centre is one of the places we go often. As I wrote about Renoir Cinema in the past, The Brunswick Centre is a modernist architecture and a residential and shopping centre in Bloomsbury. Originally designed in 60s and completed in 1976, renovation of the then rundown building was completed and reopened in 2006. Although most of the tenants are the chain stores, the Brunswick centre is very convenient place for us. There is a motorcycle bay just next to the Brunswick, and we can buy all basic needs in one place. What we do there always the same, more or less. First we have lunch; either hamburger at Gourmet Burger Kitchen (GBK / see my past entry) , pasta at Carluccio’s, or sandwich at Apostroph (a decent café as a chain in UK) , depending on our mood. Then we check out drugstores Superdrug and/or Boots, and sometimes Holland & Barrett for vitamins and health foods, and Butlers for kitchen products or candles. We stop by French Connection (FCUK) and Benetton, when we have time and if we feel like. If in evening, I go to Russell Square station and pick up the free Evening Standard. At the end, we go to Waitrose for grocery shopping.

The housing parts above the shopping complex (reminding me of  Teotihuacan in Mexico with its stairs-like shape – is it only me??) are covered with glasses, and look hot in the summer and cold in the winter – can anyone answer the question?
