Wahaca Southbank Experiment @ Southbank

ロンドンで人気のメキシカン・ストリート・フードのチェーン、Wahaca（ワハカ）が、18ヶ月の期間限定でサウスバンクセンターに今年7月にオープンさせたのが、このWahaca Southbank Experiment。

外壁には、SanerとRemedの二人のアーティストが描いた、カラフルなメキシカン・テイストのグラフィティ。古い貨物用コンテナー8つを連結した2フロアのファンキーなオープンスペースが、テムズ川の眺めが楽しめるレストランとテキーラバーになっている。ここでは毎月、特別メニューが考案され、人気の高いものが、Wahaca全店のレギュラーメニューに加えられるそうだ。

私たちは、7月末の天気が良くて暑い日に行った。こんな日は、開け放たれた窓の横や外の席に座るのが気持ちがいいけれど、大分寒くなった今、窓は開けられないだろうし、寒さをものともしない喫煙者以外は眺めのいい外の席に座るのは辛い。この日は天気が良かった事もありレストランは混んでいて、スタッフはてんてこ舞いの様子。でも、スローなサービスで悪くなった私たちの機嫌が少し改善するほど、料理はフレッシュで美味しかったので良しとしよう。

Popular Mexican street food restaurant Wahaca opened a funky temporary venue Wahaca Southbank Experiment, running at Southbank Centre for 18 months from July 2012.

It’s built from 8 recycled shipping containers arranged to create an interlinked open space on 2 levels which house a restaurant as well as a tequila bar with panoramic river views. The walls were decorated with colourful ‘Mexicana’ graffiti by two graffiti artists, Saner and Remed. Every month new special menus are introduced and the most popular of which makes it onto the regular menu in all Wahaca restaurants.

We went there on hot & sunny day at the end of July, and it was quite nice sitting next to the opened windows, though I am afraid it is too cold now to open the windows or to sit outside except hard-core smokers. On the day, the restaurant was busy and staffs were overwhelmed, therefore service was very slow, but their food was fresh and yummy enough to improve our mood.

Festival of the World @ Southbank Centre

今年の夏のロンドンオリンピック・パラリンピックにあわせ、サウスバンク・センターでは、Festival of the World（6月1日〜9月9日）が開催されている。スポーツや芸術が若者の夢や向上心を刺激すると考えた、近代オリンピックの創立者であるピエール・ド・クーベルタン男爵にインスピレーションを得たというこのフェスティバル、芸術は人々の人生を変えられることを証明するのを目的に、アート、音楽、ダンス、詩、文学、コメディなど世界の文化イベントの他、マーケットや「urban beach（人工ビーチ）」など、様々な催しが行われている。明日29日から始まるパラリンピックと同時に、障碍を持つアーティストたちの作品を紹介するイベント「Unlimited（8月30日〜9月9日）」もスタートする予定。

Southbank Centre has been hosting Festival of the World this summer from June 1 to September 9, coinciding with the London 2012 Olympics/Paralympics. The festival is inspired by the founder of the Olympic movement, Baron Pierre de Coubertin who believed that the arts and sport could raise the aspirations of young people. During the period, Southbank offers a variety of international cultural events such as art, music, dance, poetry, literature, and comedy, as well as markets, urban beach and more to demonstrate how art can transform lives. Corresponding with the start of Paralympic Games tomorrow on August 29, ‘Unlimited‘ (Aug 30–Sep 9) will showcase art and culture commissions by disabled and deaf artists.

中でリラックスしたり遊んだりできる、かまくら型のユニークな「London Earth Creature」は、エコ建築のスペシャリスト・Small Earthの作品。

“London Earth Creature” is the unique playscape for play & relax, designed and built by eco-build specialists Small Earth.

廃材を使用して大規模作品を創っているロンドンベースのアート集団・Robots>>>>の「Everything Is Beautiful When You Don’t Look Down（下を見なければ全てが美しく見える）」。2011年のFestival of Britainで使用した木材や鉄を再利用している。

“Everything Is Beautiful When You Don’t Look Down” by the London-based arts collective Robots>>>>, who build large sculptures from recycled and reclaimed materials, have made these figures predominantly from wood and steel used at Southbank Centre’s 2011 Festival of Britain.

世界から集められた布地で作られた、15mの高さの「Under the Baobab（バオバブの木の下で） 」は、Pirate Technicsが制作。

15 metres tall “Under the Baobab” is made from stacks of fabric rings using material from around the globe, created by Pirate Technics.

Trey WatkinsとCameron Brownの二人のアーティストの作品「Perspectives（視点）」。一見、無造作に置かれたアルファベットだけれど、一定のアングルから見るとメッセージが浮かび上がる。

‘Perspectives‘ designed by artists Trey Watkins and Cameron Brown. At first they appear to be random letters, but when you see them from certain vantage points they line up to reveal hidden messages.

たくさんの緑色のバスケットを使った、韓国人アーティスト＆デザイナー・Choi Jeong Hwa（チェ・ジョン・ファ）の「Time after Time（何度も何度も）」。

London’s One Room Hotel: “A Room for London” Art Project @ Southbank Centre

Southbank Centre（サウスバンク・センター）の上に乗っかった船。これは、London 2012 Festivalの一環のアートプロジェクト「A Room for London」、テムズ川を見下ろす一部屋だけのホテル。London 2012 Festivalは、北京オリンピック終了後の2008年9月より4年間に渡って行われている文化芸術プログラム「Cultural Olympiad（カルチュラル・オリンピアード）」のハイライトとして、6月21日から9月9日まで、ロンドン・オリンピックの開催中、無料コンサートやアート展など、約1000ものパフォーマンスやイベントが催される他、フェスティバル前にも様々なカウントダウンイベントが行われる予定。

この「A Room for London」は、ジョゼフ・コンラッドの1899年出版の小説「Heart of Darkness（闇の奥）」に出てくる、テムズ川を出発しアフリカのコンゴに至る旅に使われたriverboat（川船）にインスピレーションを得て、David Kohn ArchitectsとアーティストのFiona Bannerが制作した。一晩限り、二人まで宿泊可能で宿泊料は£120〜、公的プロジェクトだからか、メディアも注目する期間限定の特別ホテルなのに、値段はかなり控えめ。あいにく昨年9月9日に始まった1〜6月の予約は開始12分で満室になったけれど、7〜12月の予約は来週19日正午に始まる。メディアでも取り上げられているので応募多数と予測されるけれど、想い出作りに、運試しに申し込んでみるのもいいかも。

A classic boat appeared on the top of Southbank Centre, overlooking the river Thames – this is an arts project “A Room for London” and it is a part of the London 2012 Festival. The London 2012 Festival is a huge cultural celebration, coinciding with the Olympic and Paralympic Games in London, and a culmination of the a four-year programme of cultural events “Cultural Olympiad“, started in 2008 just after Beijing Olympic. From June 21 to September 9, 2012, there will be 1,000 performances and events such as free concerts and art exhibitions, as well as countdown events before the Festival opens.

Inspired by the riverboat captained by Joseph Conrad while in the Congo in 1890, later recreated in his novel Heart of Darkness, David Kohn Architects and artist Fiona Banner created this unique art project. General public can rent out this space for £120〜 for up to two people for one night only. The price is quite reasonable with the premium to stay at the special art project with  limited period and public attention – probably because it is a public event for everybody. Unfortunately the riverboat is sold out during January–June, just 12 minutes after going live on September 8th last year, but bookings for the period of July to December will go on sale online at 12pm on January 19 next week. Festival of Britain @ Southbank

ロンドンはこのところ晴れ続き、最高気温26度と、ロンドンとしては真夏並みの毎日。明日からのイースターホリデーもお天気だそうで、サウスバンクで明日から始まるFestival of Britainにはもってこいの良い陽気になりそう。

イギリスの文化と創造力を祝うFestival of Britainは、今年で60周年を迎える。フェスティバルが始まった1951年のロンドンは、第二次世界大戦の傷跡もまだ生々しく、再開発が必要だった。そんな中、フェスティバルはイギリス人に戦争からの復興と、破壊された都市の再構築における、より品質の高いデザインの発展と促進のために企画された。

主催するサウス・バンク・センターでは、9月4日の終了まで4ヶ月に渡り、ミュージシャンのレイ・デイヴィスの「Melt Down」やYBAアーティスト、トレイシー・エミンの「Tracey Emin: Love is What You Want」展など、
著名アーティストや思想家たちのパフォーマンスやトーク、イベントなどが開催される予定。

It’s been incredibly nice in London these days with a year-worth of sunshine and maximum temperature of 26° like a summer time. The weather is supposed to remain good and dry during upcoming Easter weekend, which is perfect for the opening of Festival of Britain from Good Friday tomorrow in Southbank.

The Festival of Britain, celebrating  British culture and creativity, marks its 60th anniversary this year. The first festival was held in 1951 just after Word War II, when much of London was still in ruins and redevelopment was badly needed. The Festival was an attempt to give Britons a feeling of recovery and progress and to promote better-quality design in rebuilding of British towns and cities following the war.

This year, Southbank Centre hosts a variety of performances, new outdoor environments, talks and events by some of Britain’s leading artists and thinkers, including rock musician Ray Davies‘s ‘Melt Down‘ and  “Tracey Emin: Love is What You Want“, for four months until September 4.

川の側のQueens Walkでは、ヴィンテージ水着の展示や貝で出来た洞窟など、アーティストたちによってカスタマイズされた、イギリスのビーチにつきもののカラフルなBeach Hut（ビーチ小屋）が並ぶ（写真はオープニング前）。海鳥の保存協会が啓蒙活動を行う、Mark Dion製作のMobile Gull Appreciation Unit（カモメへの理解のための移動式ユニット）も、ご愛嬌（写真）。

On the Queens Walk next to the Thames, colourful Beach Hut, typical on British beaches, customised by artists to contains something different, such as n exhibition of vintage beachwear and a shell grotto. Mark Dion’s Mobile Gull Appreciation Unit, which plays host to different seabird preservation societies, is a bit freaky but cute, and guaranteed to catch people’s attention (photo).

同じくQueen’s Walkに作られた、70mの長さのURBAN BEACH。水着姿で日焼けに勤しむ人々で一杯のパリ・プラージュと違い、子供の砂場と化している。

70-metre beach “URBAN BEACH” on the Queen’s Walk. The beach becomes a kids playground, in compare to French counterpart of Paris Plage, which is more like an outdoor tanning salon.

きつねはペット、それとも害獣？わらブロックで出来た作品「Urban Fox」は、そんな問題を提起。すごく悲しそうな表情にキュンとくる（写真）。この作品メイキングのビデオはここをクリック。

レベル2の外のテラスに展示された、アート・インスタレーション（アーティスト、作品名は不明）。詩？が書かれたたくさんの紙が天井から吊るされ、その天井に貼られた何本のワイヤーには、紙飛行機が。

Art installation outside Level 2 on the Riverside Terrace (I can’t find who made this and what is the title). Strings of papers with poetry? are attached from the ceiling, and paper aeroplanes are on the wires coming out of the ceiling.

Cologne Christmas Market @ Southbank

今年で3回目となるCologne Christmas Marketが12月23日まで、テムズ川沿いのSouthbank Centre/Royal Festival Hall（サウス・バンク・センター／ロイヤル・フェスティバル・ホールとLondon Eye（ロンドン・アイ）の間で開催中。伝統的なドイツのクリスマス・マーケットをロンドンに再現したこのマーケットには、60近くの木造のシャレーが並び、ブラートヴルスト（ドイツのソーセージ）、グリューワイン、ハート形のジンジャーブレッド、ローストしたアーモンドやキャンディーなどのフード＆ドリンク、そして手作りのおもちゃやジュエリー、レース、ろうそく、陶芸品や、クリスマスツリーのオーナメントなどの工芸品を売っている。また、メリーゴーランドや、子供向けの30分のショーが行われるSanta’s Secret Villageもある。

写真は去年のものだけれど、去年も今年も基本的に変わってない。何年か前、ウィーンに旅行した時にクリスマス・マーケットを体験したけれど、サウスバンクのと何かが違う。何が違うかと考えたら、ウィーンのクリスマス・マーケットは、もっときらびやかに飾られていて活気があり、訪れている人々もとても幸せそうだった。でもサウスバンクのは、中途半端で盛り上がりに欠け、何だかうら寂しげ。人々もあんまり楽しんでるように見えない。違う文化の伝統を形だけ真似するのではなく、もうひと工夫してほしいところ。

Cologne Christmas Market is taking place for the third time between the Southbank Centre/Royal Festival Hall and London Eye along the River Thames. Bringing a traditional German Christmas Market to London, around 60 traditionally decorated wooden chalets sell German specialty such as “Bratwurst”, a glass of “Glühwein” (German Mulled Wine), gingerbread hearts, roasted almonds and candies, as well as handcrafted gifts, toys, jewelry, hand tatted laces, candles, ceramics and glass ornaments for Christmas tree. There are also the carousel and Santa’s Secret Village that houses 30-minute children’s shows, to entertain small visitors.

These photos are of last year’s, but it is more or less the same this year. I went to Christmas markets in Vienna few years ago, and it was much more fun than the Southbank’s, which is rather sad and depressing. Christmas markets in Vienna was more glittering and lively that gave me true festive feelings. Visitors there looked far more happier than the ones in Southbank who looked bored or little interested. The organizer must work harder, instead of just making a bad copy of a festivity from foreign culture.
