Store Street Espresso Café @ Bloomsbury

昨年10月に、Tottenham Court Road（トッテナム・コート・ロード）からStore Streetを東にずんずん行ったところにオープンした、Store Street Espresso。入口を入ると、カウンター上の木のプレートに並べられている、美味しそうなブラウニーやマフィン、サンドイッチなどが目に入る。白壁には現代アートが飾られ、天窓から太陽の光が差し込む明るくてシンプルな店内は、近くにあるUCL（ユニヴァーシティ・カレッジ・ロンドン）らしき学生で満席状態。雰囲気はいいんだけれど、唯一木の椅子が固いのが難点。特に、左手中程にある、木の板の上にクッションが置かれた席は、長居するとお尻が痛くなってしまう。

独立系のコーヒーが美味しくて感じのいいカフェは、あの辺りには少ない。トッテナム・コート・ロードでの買い物や、近くにあるBritish Museum（大英博物館）での美術鑑賞の帰りに、コーヒーの名店にはお決まりのSquare Mile coffeeから仕入れた豆でいれた、美味しいコーヒーをどうぞ。

Store Street Espresso, opened last October, is located on Store Street, going east from Tottenham Court Road. When you step in the café, good-looking muffins, brownies, and sandwiches on cute wooden boards warmly welcome you. The sitting area is filled with sun shine streaming in through skylights, and modern arts add some excitement to pure white walls. No wonder why this simple and cozy café was full of customers, probably most of them are students of nearby UCL. Nearly perfect, but the only problem is their hard wooden chairs, especially seating of the table on the middle left is just wooden boards with some cushions on the top, and it may hurt your bottom when sitting long.

But there are only few independent nice cafés in the area yet. So when on shopping at Tottenham Court Road or on visit to nearby British Museum, enjoy a good cup of London’s famous Square Mile coffee.

Look Mum No Hands! Cycle Café @ Clerkenwell

長く寒い冬が終わり、ようやく最高気温が20度を超えた近頃、心なしか自転車に乗ってる人が俄に増えたような気がする。

Old StreetとGoswell Roadの交差点の少し東にあるLook Mum No Hands!（「ママ、見て！手放しで自転車に乗れるよ！」という意味だと思う）は、自転車修理ワークショップと駐輪場を備えた Cycle Café（サイクル・カフェ）で、4月にオープンしたばかり。以前に書いたLock 7とともに、Time Out誌のロンドンのベスト・サイクル・カフェの1つに選ばれている。広々としたカフェの中は、自転車やパーツ、ロードレースの写真がそこかしこに飾られ、奥のスクリーンには、5月8日より開催中の自転車レース、ジロ・デ・イタリアが放映されていた。ジロ・デ・イタリアと言えば、2008年のレースはMの母親の家の前を通るコースになっていて、ちょうどその時イタリアにいた私たちは、矢のように通り過ぎていく世界の第一線で活躍する選手たちを目の当たりにし、興奮したことを思い出す。

Look Mum No Hands!は、Old Street、Clerkenwell Road、Theobald’s Roadなどと名前を変えながらセントラルとイースト・ロンドンをつなぐルートに面しているので、通勤途上ちょっと一休みしたいサイクリストたちには打ってつけのロケーション。味に定評のあるSquare Mile CoffeeのコーヒーやSUKI Teaの紅茶の他、ハムや野菜の盛り合わせ、サンドイッチ、ケーキ等の軽食もある。ビールやワイン等のアルコールもあるけれど、飲んだ後に自転車に乗る時は、車の往来が多い道なので、くれぐれもご注意を。

Finally long and cold winter is gone and the maximum temperature have crossed over 20ºc, and I see more cyclists in the city recently. Look Mum No Hands!, just opened in April, is a cycle café/bar with bicycle repair workshop and bike parking in the premise. The café, together with Lock 7, is listed as one of the best cycle café by the Time Out.

This spacious café is filled with bicycles, bike parts, and photos of road races, and was showing Giro’ d’Italia taking place from May 8 when we were there. M’s mum’s house was on the route of 2008 Giro d’Italia. We happened to be there at that time, and we had an honor to watch bullet-speed world class cyclists passing just in front of us – it was my first and only experience to see a cycle race.

Look Mum No Hands! is located on the busy route connecting central and East London and changing its name to Old Street, Clerkenwell Road, Theobald’s Road and so on, and it is a perfect location for cyclists on commute to take a little break. The café serves delicious Square Mile Coffee and SUKI Tea, as well as some light meals and snacks such as sandwiches, cured meats or veggie platters, and pastries and cakes. Beer and wines are also available, but be careful when you hit the road after you have some, as Old Street is a quite busy road with full of cars.

Bea’s of Bloomsbury @ Theobald’s Road

Dose Esporessoで食べたスイーツが美味しかったので、Theobald’s Roadにある仕入れ先のBea’s of Bloomsburyに行ってみた。交通量の多いTheobald’s Roadに面していて、特に何があるわけでもないエリアという立地条件だが、Time Out誌の「London’s Best Tea Rooms」「London’s Best Coffee」に選ばれた他、数々のメディアにも取り上げられた、隠れた名店。全ての商品は、厳選された材料を使って、毎日店内のオープン・キッチンで手作りされる。店先のウィンドーには、芸術的にデコレーションされたケーキが並び、カウンターには色とりどりのカップケーキやペイストリー（pastry／焼き菓子）、ケーキ類が並ぶ。スイーツの他、2時半までは日替わりランチやサンドイッチが食事類、2時半以降はTime Out誌で「ベスト・カジュアル・アフタヌーンティー」に輝いたアフタヌーンティーが£8で楽しめる。黒を基調にした、クラシック・モダンな店内にいくつかあるテーブルは、昼下がりのお茶とケーキを楽しんでいる人で満席。テイクアウトした、ドライフルーツ入りのケーキは、しっとりしていて甘さ加減もちょうどいい。Mが愛用のAlessi PINA エスプレッソ・メーカーで入れてくれたエスレッソとともに頂いた。美味しかった：）

We went to Bea’s of Bloomsbury on Theobald’s Road, as the sweets we had at Dose Esporesso were delicious. Located on busy Theobald’s Road in a boring area, but the cafe is a hidden gem. Everything in the cafe is produced eacy day in their open-plan kitchen using good quality ingredients (including coffee from Square Mile coffee). Bea’s is the winner of “London’s Best Tea Rooms” and “London’s Best Coffee” by Time Out magazine, and got many media coverages. You can see artistically decorated cakes displayed at the store windows, and colorful cupcakes, pastries and sweets are at the counter inside waiting for you. Other than these tempting sweets, you can also have daily lunch menus and sandwiches before 2:30 pm, and enjoy their award-winning “‘no-frills’ afternoon tea” (Time Out) for £8 thereafter. The interior is ‘classic modern’ style based on black. Few tables inside were all taken by the people enjoying afternoon tea and cakes. We had our take-out cake with dry fruits with M’s espresso made by his beloved Alessi PINA espresso maker. The cake was moist and perfect sweetness. Yummy – very satisfied.
