HOMA Restaurant @ Stoke Newington Church Street

今週は珍しく晴れ続き、久しぶりにStoke Newingtonまで足を伸ばして、HOMAでランチした。白い壁にカントリー風木製テーブル＆椅子、吊り下げられたレトロなランプシェードも可愛い。ランチとディナーの狭間だからか、客は私たちだけで、静かでとてもリラックスした雰囲気。

メニューには、種類はそう多くないが、オーガニックで地元産の旬の食材を主に使用した、イタリアン＆地中海風の料理が並ぶ。コーヒー豆はブロードウェイ・マーケットにある名店・Climpson and Sonsのもの。環境にも配慮、テイクアウト用のフォークやスプーン、食材のパッケージは、再生品で、使用後は堆肥にできるもののみを使用しているそう。

あいにくランチタイムが終わったところで、オーダーできるのはピザのみ。ピッツァ・マルゲリータ＋追加のアンチョビが、何故かチョリソ・ピッツァ＋目玉焼きに化けたのがご愛嬌だが、生地はパリッとしていて、トッピングもフレッシュ、味は悪くない。半熟の卵はピッツァにはやはりあわないと思うのだが、申し訳なさ気なスタッフによると、フランス人が時々卵のトッピングをリクエストするのだそう。お詫びでドリンクが無料になったのも、誠実な対応で好感度大。

It has been sunny these days, so we stretched our destination to Stoke Newington and had lunch at HOMA. The interior is very cute, with white walls, rusty wooden tables & chairs, and retro lamp shades. It was in between lunch and dinner time, and we were the only customers there, and we enjoyed its peaceful and relaxing space all by ourselves.

Their menu is rather small, but their Italian and Mediteranean dishes are made of fresh and seasonal ingredients, and organic and locally produced sources wherever possible. Their coffee is from renown Climpson and Sons in Broadway Market. They also care environment and use only recycled compostable food packaging and catering disposables, such as takeaway fork and spoons.

Unfortunately, only pizza was available when we went after lunch time was over. For some reason, we got chorizo pizza with egg on top, instead of pizza margherita with extra anchovies (interesting misunderstanding). But it was not bad after all, as pizza crust was crunchy and the toppings were fresh. I am afraid to say that egg didn’t go well with pizza, but French people sometimes request egg topping, according to an apologetic staff. It was also nice of her to made our drinks complimentary – very favorable response to the mistake.

Newcomers on Broadway Market

久しぶりにBroadway Market（ブロードウェイ・マーケット）に行ったら、新しいお店が何軒かオープンしていた。いつも混雑しているl’eau à LA BOUCHE （ロアラブッシュ）が案の定満席だったので、新しいイタリアン・カフェのDino Deli（ディーノ・デリ）でランチ。統一性も個性もないセカンドハンド（中古）家具に、無国籍風オブジェや色あせたラグで飾られた小さな店内は、大学街の学生向けカフェという感じで、個性的でセンスのいい店が並ぶブロードウェイ・マーケットでは見劣りする。でもサンドイッチもコーヒーもまずまずで、人の入りもまあまあ。

I went to Broadway Market after many months, and found some new places opened. Well-liked l’eau à LA BOUCHE was full as we anticipated, we tried a new Italian café Dino Deli. Decorated with mix & match of second hand furniture which don’t have much character either, shabby rug and quirky objects, Dino is like a scruffy student café near college and does not meet hip Broadway Market standard. However, their sandwich and coffee were OK and people came anyway.

VogueやHarper’s Bazaarなどで仕事をしたスタイリストがオープンした女性向けブティック・69b。

69b is a women’s fashion boutique, owned by a stylist who has worked for Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar, Exit and i-D magazines.

“Hokusai Tsunami print for Japan” Charity Print by Pure Evil

ポップ/ゴシック・グラフィティ・アーティストを自称するPure Evilが、自身のオンラインショップで、葛飾北斎の「富嶽三十六景波裏」をモチーフにした「Hokusai Tsunami print for Japan」というチャリティー・プリントを販売、日本赤十字社への寄付を募っている。

Pure Evilは、前にグラフィティの事を書いた時に何度か触れた（参考1・2）、家の近所にある、不動産開発業者Londonnewcastleが持つアート＆パフォーマンス・スペース、Londonnewcastle Depotの壁に、MURDER MILEやうさぎ？のグラフィティを描いている（今は他のグラフィティに取って代わった）。

Pop/gothic graffiti artist, Pure Evil sells a charity print “Hokusai Tsunami print for Japan“, inspired by Japanese ukiyo-e artist Hokusai‘s The Great Wave off Kanagawa, to raise money for the Japanese Red Cross to be distributed directly among the earthquake and tsunami affected Japanese population.

Pure Evil left some graffiti such as MURDER MILE and colorful bunnies (I am not sure the title) on the wall of nearby art & performance space Londonnewcastle Depot, owned by a developer Londonnewcastle, which I mentioned in my past entries (1 / 2). Two of the graffiti are gone now, taken over by the new work just finished recently.

Datte Foco Pizza Al Taglio @ Stoke Newington Church Street

最近発見した、ハックニーのStoke Newington（ストーク・ニューイントン）にあるPizza Al Taglio（ピザ・アル・タリオ）のお店、「Datte Foco（ダッテ・フォコ）」。店名は、文字通りだと「自分自身に火をつけろ」、「くたばれ」といった意味のローマのスラング。以前シティで金融関係の仕事をしていた友人2人（一人はストーク・ニューイントンの地元民、一人はイギリスに長く住むイタリア人）がオープンした。ピザ・アル・タリオは、大きな長方形の型で焼いて四角くスライスしたローマ風ピザで、イタリアでは小腹が空いた時に気軽に食べるストリート・フード。イタリアに行くと、私たちの3時のおやつはピザ・アル・タリオかジェラートと決まっている。ローマのレストランでピザ職人の修行をしたイタリア人の共同オーナーの手による、ダッテ・フォコのピザは、ふっくらモチモチのナポリ風ピザに対し、正統派ローマ風、サクッ、カリッとしていて、なかなかいける。でも時間が経つと味が落ちるので、運良く出来たてが目の前にあったら、トッピングに構わずゲットしたい。

イタリアン・レストランやカフェが氾濫しているロンドンで、ピザ・アル・タリオを出すお店はありそうであまりない。思いつくところでは、以前書いたPrinci（もっとモチモチっとしていて、ローマ風とは違うけれど）やMaletti、また今度行ってみたいと思っているAdagio Pizzaくらい。ミニ・チェーンのMangiareもあるけれど、正直あんまり美味しくない。ダッテ・フォコもいけるけれど、私はMalettiの方が好みだな。そう言えば最近、Malettiはご無沙汰だなあ。ピザは美味しいんだけれど、地下には窓がないし、上の階はカウンター席だけで、座り心地が悪いんだよね。

Datte Foco is a pizza al taglio shop that we found recently in Stoke Newington in Hackney. The name “Datte Foco” means “put yourself in fire” in Roman slung, equivalent to “go to hell” in English. Two friends, a Stoke Newington local and an Italian educated in UK, who used to work in finance in the City opened this Roman style pizza shop. Pizza al taglio (literary “by the cut”) is a kind of pizza baked in large rectangular trays and sold in rectangular slices, and is an Italian street food or fast food. When we go to Italy, our afternoon snack is usually either pizza al taglio or gelato. The Italian owner trained himself as a pizzaiolo in a restaurant in Rome, and Datte Fuco’s pizza is crispy as authentic Roman pizza should be and it is quite good. But the taste of pizza worsen as the time goes by (it’s not their fault and all pizza are the same), and if you are lucky to see a newly baked pizza just coming out of oven, go for it, regardless of its topping.

There are hundreds of thousands of Italian restaurants and cafés in London, but it is hard to find a place that serves pizza al taglio. What I think of are Princi (its pizza is softer and chewier and it’s not really Roman), Maletti, and Adagio Pizza that I’ve never been but want to try. A mini-chain Mangiare is not really great, and I don’t recommend. Datte Foco is good, but my award goes to Maletti. I haven’t been there quite long time and craze for it! Their pizza is great, but the seating is the problem – there is no windows downstairs (M doesn’t like a place with no natural light) and counter seats on the ground floor is quite uncomfortable…

Lemon Monkey Cafe+Deli @ Stoke Newington High Street

ハックニーにあるカフェ&デリ、Lemon Monkey（レモン・モンキー）。カフェやレストラン、オーガニック・レストランが並ぶStoke Newington Church Streetと、Stoke Newington High Streetの交差点近くにある。オーガニックやフェアトレードのコーヒーやケーキ、またフレッシュな食材を使って注文してから作ってくれるサンドイッチは、何度も通いたくなる味。またデリコーナーも充実していて、壁際の大きな棚や冷蔵コーナーには、イギリスやヨーロッパの食材、パン、ハムやソーセージ、チーズ等が並ぶ。木曜〜土曜日は、９時までオープン。時にはクッキング教室やライブも催される（イベント詳細はfacebookで確認を）。店内は、広々としていて、アンティーク調の食器類や家具でセンス良くまとまっている。メインのカフェエリアの他に、店の奥にも、本棚にたくさんの料理本が並ぶ、居心地の良いリビングルームのようなスペースもあり、ついつい長居してしまう。一つだけ意見するとしたら、可愛いけれどちょっとカフェのイメージに合わない店頭の看板とロゴ（ウェブサイト参照）と、店内の所々に飾ってあるサルのぬいぐるみか。

Lemon Monkey is a rusty chic cafe in Hackney, offering organic and fairtrade coffees, cakes, lunch & dinner platters and fine foods. The cafe is located on the corner of Stoke Newington High Street and Stoke Newington Church Street, where is lined up with cafes, restaurants, small select stores, and organic supermarket. Their freshly made to order sandwich is pretty addictive. You can find fine British and European foods, cheese, bread, and charcuteries on the deli corner and large shelves next to the wall. The cafe opens until 9pm from Thursday to Saturday, and sometimes hosts events, cooking class or live musics (check the event schedule on their facebook page). The interior is spacious and tastefully decorated with antique furniture and tableware. There is an extra space on the back of the cafe, where you can relax like at someone’s living room with bookshelves filled with cook books. If I can say one thing, that the storefront with their logo and stuffed monkeys here and there in the cafe – it is cute but these are not perfectly fit to the image of the cafe.
