Mr & Mrs Smith: “Times 2 for 1” / “Hotel Collection: France”

去年、コッツウォルズ旅行の際に使った、Mr & Mrs Smithのキャンペーン（参照エントリー）、今年はタイムズ紙とタイアップ、イギリス国内とヨーロッパを中心にした70のスタイリッシュなホテルに、2泊で1泊分の値段で泊まれる、お得な「Times 2 for 1」キャンペーンをやっている。このキャンペーンを利用するには、日曜を除く先週土曜日から今日までのタイムズ紙に掲載されたパスワード6つの中から3つを集めないといけないのだけれど、お許しをもらって、ここにパスワードを書かせてもらえた。ウェブサイトの中程にあるパスワード欄に、boutique/luxury/seductionの3つのパスワードをインプットして「submit codes」をクリック。そうすると、リストにある希望のホテルをオンラインで予約することができる。また、電話でも予約を受け付け可能。予約は11月30日が締め切り、1月9日までに宿泊を終える事が条件なので、予約はお早めに。

Mr & Mrs Smith‘s “2 for 1 nights” campaign that we used for last year’s Cotswolds trip comes back this year (see related post), teamed up with the Times this time as “Times 2 for 1“. With this great two-for-one offer, you can stay at one of the 70 stylish hotels listed, mainly in the UK and Europe, for two nights with the price of one night. The rule is to collect three of six passwords printed in the Times from the last Saturday till today, except Sunday. But here, with a permission, I can tell you the passwords – hurray! Go to Mr & Mrs Smith’s web page and type boutique/luxury/seduction in the password sections, and click “submit code” – and you are able to book a hotel of your choice online. Alternatively you can book online if you prefer. Just don’t forget that bookings must be made by 30 November 3o, 2010 for stays up to January 9, 2010.

Mr & Mrs Smithはホテル・ガイドも発行している。これは今年7月に出版されたフランス版ホテルコレクション。パリの洗練されたシティホテルから豪華なシャトー・ホテル、田舎の素敵なヴィラやゲストハウスなど、厳選された12地域の32軒のホテルが、その地域の情報とともに掲載されている。写真もとてもきれいだし、レイアウトも洒落ている。少しざらっとした表面の、コーティングされていない紙の匂いや手触りもいい。この本を見ていると、今すぐにでもカバンに荷物を詰めて、バカンスに行きたくなってしまう。

Mr & Mrs Smith also publishes hotel guides, as well as hotel reservation service. This is Mr &  Mrs Smith Hotel Collection: France, published in July this year. You can find 32 fabulous accommodations carefully selected in 12 destinations, from Paris’ contemporary hotels to gorgeous châteaux and cosy country side villas, together with beautiful photos and useful local information. The layout of the book is quite sophisticated, and I love the touch and smell of its uncoated papers. When I look at those pretty hotels, I feel an urge to pack my suitcase right now and go on vacation tomorrow!

Modernist T-Towels: Kensal Green and Trellick Tower

コヴェント・ガーデンにあるLondon Transport Museum（交通博物館）で買った、「People Will Always Need Plates」のModernist T-Towels（ティー・タオル）。デザインが素敵なので買ったから、お皿拭きには使わない。イギリス製でコットン100％のこのティー・タオルは、スクリーン印刷の鮮やかなカラーで、Trellick Tower（トレリック・タワー）とKensal Green（ケンサル・グリーン）の街並がデザインされている。ほかの図柄も欲しかったのだけれど、9種類あるモダニスト・デザインコレクションのうち、この2種類しか売っていなかった。ノッティング・ヒルの北にあるトレリック・タワーは、1972年に完成したロンドンを代表するモダン建築で、建築家・Ernő Goldfinger（エルノ・ゴールドフィンガー）によって設計された、ブルータリズム様式の公共住宅。ロンドン北西部に位置するケンサル・グリーンは、これと言った特徴のあるエリアではないけれど、クイーンのフレディ・マーキュリーが火葬された場所で、著名人が多く眠るKensal Green Cemeteryがある。

I bought these Modernist T-Towels (Tea Towels) by People Will Always Need Plates at London Transport Museum in Covent Garden. The 100% cotton tea towels is proudly made in UK, and feature Trellick Tower and houses in Kensal Green in rich screen-printed colours. I got them for its design, so I won’t use them for drying dishes. I wanted to buy other design as well, but the shop had only these two design among 9 modernist design collection. Trellick Tower is a 31-storey block of public housing in north of Notting Hill, designed in the Brutalist style by architect Ernő Goldfinger and completed in 1972. Kensal Green on northwest London is not exciting area, but there is the Kensal Green Cemetery which is one of the finest Cemeteries in London and is known that Queen’s Freddie Mercury was cremated there.

ロンドンの交通の歴史を物語る、London Transport Museum。2005年からの改修工事の後、2007年11月にリニューアルオープンしたコヴェント・ガーデンの博物館のほかに、Acton（アクトン）にある Depot（倉庫）にもコレクションを展示している。ここのショップがなかなか、センスの良い品揃えを誇っている。買い物袋のデザインもモダンで、これを手に入れるために買い物したくなる。オンライン・ショップもあって、海外発送もしてくれる。コヴェント・ガーデンのど真ん中にあって交通の便もいいし、ロンドンに数多あるチープな店で粗悪品を買うぐらいなら、ロンドン土産はぜひここで。

London Transport Museum conserves and explains London’s transport heritage. The main museum in Covent Garden was reopened in November 2007 after two years of refurbishment. Its Acton Depot also holds the majority of the Museum’s collections which are not on display in the museum. The museum shop has a good selection of products, and its modern and stylish shopping bags is another reason to shop there. The museum has an online shop as well and delivers to worldwide (→details). The museum is located in the heart of Covent Garden, so grab London’s souvenirs there, rather than shopping trashes at cheap and ugly stores around London.

『フィクサー』でアカデミー助演女優賞をしたイギリス人女優、ティルダ・スウィントンが主演のイタリア映画「I AM LOVE (IO SONO L’AMORE)」を観た。

I AM LOVEは、ミラノの裕福なRecchi（レッキ）家が舞台。一家の財産を築き上げた家長のEdoardo Recchi Sr.（エドアルド・レッキ・シニア）は、引退を決意、その会社の実権を息子のTancredi（タンクレディ）と孫のEdoardo Jr（エドアルド・ジュニア）に譲った。エドアルド・ジュニアは、会社の仕事以外にも、友人のAntonio（アントニオ）とともに、郊外にレストランをオープンする計画をたてている。ティルダ・スウィントン演じるEmma（エンマ）は、タンクレディのロシア人妻で、4人の成長した子供の母親。タンクレディと結婚し、ミラノに移り住んできてから、ロシア人としてのアイデンティティを捨て、夫に与えられた新しい名前、「エンマ」と生きていくことを決意し、ミラノの上流階級の生活に馴染もうと努力してきた。その完璧なイメージと裏腹に、レッキ家の人々の人生は急速に変わっていった。娘のElisabetta（エリザベッタ）はレズビアンで、留学先のロンドンでカミングアウトして新しい人生を送ろうとしていた。ロシア人としての母を敬愛するエドアルド・ジュニアは、ビジネスの厳しい現実を知り幻滅、また会社の「明るい未来」のために、祖父の興した会社を手放すことを受け入れざるを得ず、失意の中にいた。レッキ家の名に恥じないよう頑張ってきたエンマは、ありのままの自分を受け入れてくれる息子の友人・アントニオと恋に落ちたことによって、抑圧していた 情熱が解き放された。許されない恋に落ちたエンマの「パンドラの箱」が開けられ、悲劇がレッキ家を襲い、家族は崩壊を迎える。

昼ドラのようなストーリー自体は、ありきたりだけれど、スタイリッシュな撮影技法（シネマトグラフィー）で、ミラノの街やイタリアの自然を、美しく幻想的に映し出している。ミニマル・ミュージックの作曲家、ジョン・アダムスの印象的な音楽と、イタリア・未来派のタイポグラフィーの使用も、クラシックな映画の雰囲気にとても良く合っている。ジル・サンダーのデザインするシンプルでエレガントな衣装も素敵だ。エキセントリックで有名なティルダ・スウィントンはやっぱりちょっとヘンだったけれど、存在感はかなりあった。ヴィスコンティやアントニオーニ、パゾリーニなど、70年代の黄金時代のイタリア映画を思わせる、上流社会の華麗だけれど息の詰まるような生活をセンス良く描き出した、かっこいい映画。かなりお薦めです。

We saw an Italian movie “I AM LOVE (IO SONO L’AMORE)”, starring British actress Tilda Swinton, who won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her performance in Michael Clayton.

I AM LOVE is the story of the Milan’s wealthy Recchi family. Edoardo Recchi Sr. is the patriarch who made a family fortune, and has given shared ownership of his industrial company to both his son Tancredi, and his grandson Edoardo Jr. Edoardo Jr. also has another plan of opening a restaurant with his chef friend, Antonio. Emma (Tilda Swinton) is Tancredi’s Russian wife and a mother of her four grown children. She has adopted the culture of Milan’s upper class since she married to Tancredi and moved to Milan – sealing her identity as a Russian and taking a new name ‘Emma’ that her husband gave her. Behind the flawless facade of perfect aristocratic life, the Recchi family’s lives are rapidly changing. Emma finds out that her daughter Elisabetta is a lesbian and she starts her new life in London with her girlfriend. Edoardo Jr., who adores his mother’s Russian side, is disappointed with a ‘harsh reality’ of business and is forced to let the family business go out of his hand by selling the company for its ‘better future’. Emma tries to keep up the elegant image of the Recchi family, but her life turns upside down when she falls in love with Antonio, a friend of her son, who unleashes her long repressed passion and true identity. Once the Emma’s Pandora’s box is open, a tragedy hits the family that leads the family fallen apart.

The story itself is typical melodrama and nothing new, but the cinematography is very atmospheric and stylish, portraying Milan and Italian countryside enigmatically and beautifully. Italian Futurism typeface and impressive score by a minimalist composer John Adams are perfectly matched with the classic atmosphere of the movie as well. The simple yet elegant costumes designed by Jil Sander are also chic and cool. Though well-known eccentric actress Tilda Swinton is a bit weird in the movie as I expected, her existence glows and stands out in the screen. I quite like I AM LOVE, masterfully describing gorgeous but rigid aristocratic lifestyle, like film directors of 70’s golden age of Italian cinema such as Visconti, Antonioni, and Pasolini did. Highly recommend this movie.

Habitat @ Tottenham Court Road

南には電器店が、そして中程にはインテリア・ショップが並ぶトッテナム・コート・ロードにあるHabitat（ハビタ）。少し前、黒のポリエステルでコーティングされたワイヤ製の台所の水切りラック（CACTI）を£8（約1150円）で買ったのだが、3月3日から始まった春のセールで、2割引の£6.40になっていた。なかなかおしゃれだし、家のシンクにぴったり合うサイズで重宝しているけれど、ちょっとショック。しかも、友人のプレゼントに定価で買ったのと同じものが、半額になっていた。彼女がお店に行って値段を見たら、セコいプレゼントだと思われそうで嫌だなあ。

When we need something for home, I go to Habitat on Tottenham Court Road, where there are electric shops on the south and interior shops in the middle. Few weeks ago I bought polyester coated wire dish drainer CACTI for £8, but the price has been slashed 20% to £6.40, since big spring sale started on March 3rd. I am a bit disappointed but more than that, the present for my friend I bought for full price also became half price. I hope my friend wouldn’t see the price tag and think that I am stingy for her…

お手頃価格で素敵なデザインの商品が買えるので、Habitatにはたびたびお世話になっている（過去のエントリー参照）。しかし、2004/05期から赤字が続いていて、昨年12月には、Habitatの前オーナーでIKEAの創業者ファミリーの経営する会社IKANOもお手上げとなり、経営再建のスペシャリストであるHilcoに売却された（関連記事）。最近はしょっちゅうセールをしたり割引券がメールで送られてきたりしていて、このセールも、通常のセール時期と違うし下げ幅も大きいし、何だか必死な感じ。また、この時ロンドンにいなかったので知らなかったのだけれど、Habitatは昨年6月、TwitterでアップルやiPhone、昨年のイラン総選挙などに言及した「Hashtags」を使って、トピックとは全然関係のない自社製品を宣伝していたとして批判を浴びたという（関連記事）。今のところ閉店の予定はないそうだけれども、業績が好転しなくて倒産、ということにならないといいのだけれど。

I like Habitat, because I can buy sleek home products for reasonable price (see my past entry). But Habitat is not doing well in the last few years and has been recorded a loss since 2004/05, and  in December 2009, the former owner of IKANO, owned by the IKEA founder Kamprad family, sold the company to Hilco, a restructuring specialist (see the related article). Recently Habitat does sale often and also send out an e-mail newsletter with discount voucher. This sale during an unusual period offers quite big discount. I didn’t know the news as we were not in London, but in June 2009, Habitat was criticized for taking advantage of the list of trending topics, including hashtags referring to Apple and the iPhone as well as the 2009 Iranian election protests, on the social-networking service Twitter to promote its products (see related article).  I am wondering if Habitat is desperate. It is sad that Hilco is not thought to be planning the closure of any shops, but hopefully Habitat survives…

Vita Audio R1 DAB/FM Radio

Mがベッドの横に置いて愛聴していたLexon Tykho Radio（赤）が、3ヶ月で壊れてしまったので、Vita Audio R1 DAB/FM Radio（定価£179.99）を新しく購入した。色はこれまた赤で、ラッカー塗りでつるっとした感じに仕上がっている。Mのモノ選びの基準はまずデザイン。どんなに便利だったり実用的でも、デザインが気に入らなければ絶対買わない。電化製品だけじゃなく食べ物から家庭用品、文房具など、買うもの全てにおいてこの調子だから、ちょっと困る。中国製だけれどイギリスでデザインされたこのラジオも、レビューサイトや雑誌等で高い評価を受けているというのもプラス要因だけれど、最終的にはデザインが気に入って購入を決めた。でも、すでに廃番になってしまったモデルなので、あんまりお店のチョイスはなく、ネットで探して、最終的にアイルランドのギフト用品を扱うウェブショップPressieportで注文。

音質も良く、ipod等に接続すればスピーカーとしても使えるし、サイズも17cm x 13cm x 13cmとコンパクトなので、ベッド脇に置いても邪魔にならない。コンパクトラジオとしてはちょっと値段がはるけれど、デザインがスタイリッシュなので、使ってない時でも、インテリア・オブジェとしてもいい感じ。寝る前のひと時、心地よい音楽を楽しんでいる。

M’s bedside radio Lexon Tykho Radio (red) was broken only 3 months after purchase, so he bought a new radio Vita Audio R1 DAB/FM Radio (SRP £179.99). The color is red again, with glossy lacquer finish. M’s first priority when he buy something is definitely design. Even if the product is very useful and practical, he never buys if the design is not up to his standard. Not only to home electronics but he applies this principle to everything, from food packaging to home products and stationaries – so I cannot buy anything without his design approval. This radio is made in China but is designed in UK, and he decided to buy it mainly because of its design, though good reviews that the radio earned from tech magazines and websites a big plus. Since the model is discontinued and there are not much choice in retailers, and after checking internet for a while, we bought it from Pressieport, an Irish online Irish gift store.

The sound quality is quite good, and it can be used as a speaker by connecting to ipod or something. The size is compact, 17cm (6.75″) x 13cm (5″) x 13cm (5″),  and it doesn’t obstruct when M put next to the bed. The price is a bit high as a compact radio, but its stylish design can be seen as a piece of interior object, as well as we enjoy nice music before we fall a sleep.
