The Attendant Café @ Foley Street, Fitzrovia

The Attendantは、1890年頃に建てられた男性用公衆便所という、飲食店では考えられないロケーションに今年2月にオープンした、ユニークなカフェ。1960年代から50年以上、使われないで放置されていたものを、10万ポンドと2年という歳月をかけて計画・改築、徹底的に清掃を行い完璧に清潔にしたという。昔の管理人部屋はキッチンとして生まれ変わったが、鋳鉄製の凝った外観、ヴィクトリア朝時代のフロアタイル、またカウンターブースに改造されたDoulton & Co社製のポーセリン便器など、オリジナルの特徴も残している。

このカフェは、提供するフードやドリンクの品質にも注意を払う。ミシュラン星付きのレストラン・Pollen Street Socialで働いていたというシェフが、青果卸売市場のNew Covent Garden Marketや、Ivy House Farmなど厳選された業者から仕入れた高品質の食材を使い、腕を振るう。コーヒーはCaravan Roasteryの豆を使用。バリスタの一人に見覚えがあると思ったら、オールドストリートのカフェ・Salvation Janeで以前働いていた人だった。

元公衆便所（しかも男性用）と思うと、ちょっと生理的には微妙なところだが、雰囲気はいい。小さなお店だから混んでいる時間は席取りが難しそう。ミシュラン星レストラン出身のシェフの作った「グルメ」サンドイッチもこだわりのコーヒーも、取り立てて美味しいと言う訳じゃないけれど許容範囲。しかし私的に問題なのは、店内にトイレがないこと。このカフェに行こうと思っている方（特に女性）はご注意を。元トイレにトイレがないなんて趣味の悪い冗談みたい。この事に気付いたのが、フラット・ホワイトを飲み終えてほっこりしていた時。Mはまだ食事中だったので、一旦外に出て他のカフェを探し、トイレを使わせてもらうために再び飲み物を買う羽目になった。小さかろうが場所がなかろうが、利尿作用のあるのコーヒーや紅茶を出すお店で、トイレがないのは信条的に許せない。考えてみたら、スタッフ用トイレはある筈だから、お客にも開放すべきじゃないかと思う。しかしロンドンには、この手の「お客様は神様」と考えないカフェが多い。そして私はそんな傲慢なカフェには、どんなにお洒落でも美味しくても、基本行かないことに決めている。

The Attendant café is housed in an unlikely location for eateries – a toilet. Built around 1890, this former men’s public toilet had been abandoned since the 1960s for more than 50 years, before this tiny café opened in February this year. After two-years of planning and £100,000 restoration, the place was jet-washed and now is thoroughly ‘clean’. The old attendant’s office has become a kitchen. They have kept some original features such as the cast-iron exterior, Victorian floor tiles, Doulton & Co porcelain urinals converted into sitting booths.

In addition to its unique history and appearance, the café also care about the quality of food. Their sandwiches are created by a chef who previously worked at Michelin-star Pollen Street Social, using quality produce from New Covent Garden Market and carefully selected producers such as the Ivy House Farm. They buy their coffee beans from Caravan Roastery. We spotted one of the baristas who used to work at Salvation Jane, an Old Street venue for good coffee. 

The Attendant certainly has a character. Their michelin-level ‘gourmet’ sandwich was OK as well as their coffee, but not exceptional. But that’s not a problem. My problem was there is no toilet!! This is a warning for a potential customer, especially ladies. It is a bad joke – a toilet without toilet.  I realised it after I had my flat white, and had to go out and looked for another café, buying another drink to use their toilet. Coffees and teas are stimulant, and I have a strong belief that all cafés for eat-in should have a toilet, no matter how small it is. There should be one for staffs, so why don’t they share with customers?! In fact, there are so many cafés  in London that don’t offer a toilet to their customers, and I refuse to go to this arrongant café without toilet.

City of London Community Toilet Scheme

ふと見たカフェに貼ってあったこのステッカー。何だろうと思って調べてみたら、これはシティ・オブ・ロンドンのCommunity Toilet Scheme (CTS)の一環で、域内の参加店が店内のトイレを一般に開放する代わりに、シティが「contribution」を与える仕組み。詳細は書いていないから、contributionが何を意味するのか不明だが、対価＝お金を支払うということか？参加店は、状況によっては、トイレ利用を断る権利を有するともある。怪しい人たちにはトイレは貸さないということか。トイレ利用の際、何かを買ったり注文したりしなくても良い前提ではあるけれど、利用した人たちは罪悪感からか、何かを買ったりする人も少なからずいるらしいので、店にとってもメリットはあるようだ。参加店は、シティ・オブ・ロンドンのウェブサイトでチェック可能。

I saw this sticker on one of restauranst in the City. I am curious about what it is and checked it out. According to the City of London website, City’s Community Toilet Scheme (CTS) is to provide toilet facilities available to the public with partnership with local businesses, supplementing the City’s facilities. In exchange for providing free access to toilets to the public, the City pays a ‘contribution’ to participating businesses, though they still retains the right to refuse admission in exceptional circumstances. There is no details of ‘contribution’ means, but maybe money? Anyways, this scheme brings win-win to everyone involved. It is reported that people using their toilets often do make a purchase, though they don’t need to buy anything. You can check participating businesses on their websites.

昨日３月１８日、ボリス・ジョンソン ロンドン市長が、「The Open London Scheme」を発表した。これは、ロンドンにおいて、1999年より公衆トイレが40％減少したことを受けて、市長の公約である「ロンドンの生活の質の向上」計画の一環。大手チェーンのテスコ、セインズベリー、マークス＆スペンサー（以上スーパー）、ジョン・ルイス（デパート）、アメリカ資本のボーダース（書店）がさっそく賛同した。参加各社は、自店の開店時間中、何も買わなくても、トイレを誰にでも開放する。

ロンドンには、日本のように、行きたい！と思った時に、なかなかトイレがない。全ての地下鉄の駅にあるわけではないし（トイレのある駅のリストはここをクリック）。ファーストフード店でも、あるところとないところがあるし（スタバにはあるけれど、サンドイッチチェーンのEat.やPret a Mangerにはないと思う）、あっても基本的にそのお店の客用だし、たいてい一番奥の方にあるので、使うのに後ろめたさを感じる。公衆トイレ（上の写真はコイン式の公衆トイレで、２０ペンス入れると２０分まで使える）もどこにあるわけではないので、この計画は大歓迎だ。市長も、他の会社もこの計画に参加することを奨励しているので、ロンドンのトイレ事情が改善するかもしれない。詳しいロンドンの公衆トイレ情報はこのサイトをご参照ください。

ちなみに私のロンドン中心のお薦めのトイレは、ソーホーにあるPrinciとリージェント・ストリートのアップル・ストア。特にPrinciのトイレはスタイリッシュで、ハンドソープも高品質のものを使っているし、中の香りも良い。２店とも、トイレがある事を知らない人が多いので混んでないし、店内はいつも込み合っているので、トイレに行く時も目立たない。

Yesterday on March 18th, the London mayor Boris Johnson announced ‘The Open London Scheme‘. There has been a 40 per cent decline in public toilets in London since 1999. The mayor made a manifesto commitment to increase the quality of life in London, and The Open London scheme is a part of it.  Giant chains Tesco, Sainsbury’s, Marks and Spencer (supermarkets), John Lewis (department store), Borders (American book store)  have become the first companies to sign up, and allow the public to use their facilities during opening hours without the need to make a purchase.

In London, I can’t find a toilet easily. Not all tube station have a toilet (click here to see the map of stations with toilet), and also not all fast food chains have a toilet available — Starbucks has one, but sandwich chain Eat. and Pret a Manger don’t. Even though the store has a customer toilet, it is for their customers only and I feel always bad to use it without purchase. There are not many public toilets (like in the photo below — put 20 pence and you can use up to 20 minutes), so I really supports the scheme! I hope the situation of the toilets in London will improve with this scheme, as the mayor has encouraged more companies to join the scheme. 

One of my favorite toilets in central London are at Princi in SOHO and at the Apple Store in Regent street. Especially Princi has a beautiful bathroom with good quality hand soap and smell of incense.  In both stores, usually there is no waiting because not many people know that there is a toilet, and you don’t feel embarrassed to go as the stores are always crowded.
