White Horse by Mark Wallinger @ The Mall

イギリス人アーティスト・Mark Wallinger（マーク・ ウォリンジャー）の作品「The White Horse」は、今年3月5日より、トラファルガー広場近くのthe Mallにあるブリティッシュ・カウンシル本部の前に展示されている。このサラブレッド（英語の綴りがthoroughbredなのを今日初めて知った）競走馬の等身大彫刻作品は、本物の馬を最新機器でスキャンし、大理石と合成樹脂で作ったという。British Council Collectionの委託作品で、2年間ここに置かれるそうだ。

馬とイギリスの歴史における馬の象徴的位置づけに魅了されたウォリンジャーは、2008年に、馬の25倍のサイズで高さ50mという巨大な白馬の彫刻作品案で、The Ebbsfleet Landmark Projectのコンペを勝ち抜いた。The MallのThe White Horseは、この彫刻の等身大版。→詳細はブリティッシュ・カウンシルのウェブサイト（英語）

近くで見ると、この「白馬」、超リアル。でも、いたずらや破壊行為を防ぐためかフェンスに囲まれてて、なんか窮屈そうで可哀想。

‘The White Horse’ by British artist Mark Wallinger appeared on March 5 outside the British Council’s London headquarters on the Mall near Trafalgar Square. This is a life-size sculpture of a thoroughbred racehorse. Wallinger scanned a live horse and made this with marble and resin. Commissioned by the British Council Collection, this horse will stand on The Mall for two years. 

Wallinger is fascinated by the horse and its emblematic status in British history. He won The Ebbsfleet Landmark Project in 2008 with his proposal of a white horse, 25 times life-size, and standing some 50m tall. The White Horse on the Mall is a life-sized version of this sculpture. →more details on the British Council website.

In fact the horse is ultra-realistic. The sad thing is that the horse was surrounded by the protective fence, and looked like he was in a cage and not free…

Brazilian’s Demonstration @ Trafalgar Square

6月初旬、公共交通料金値上げに端を発し、全土に広がったブラジルのデモ（詳細）、2週間以上経った今でも、汚職撲滅、公共サービスの向上、お金のかかりすぎるW杯反対など、社会のあらゆる不満が噴出し、収まる気配を見せない。

先週17日、たまたまトラファルガー広場を通りかかったら、叫び声や音楽やら何やら騒がしいので、野次馬根性で見に行ってみたら、ブラジルの国旗だらけ。最初コンフェデ杯の応援かと思ったら、どうやら母国のデモに呼応し、ロンドンでも抗議に集まったようだ。でも、ラテン気質のブラジル人、本人たちはいたって真剣なんだろうけど、笑顔で記念撮影したりお喋りに花を咲かせたり、イギリスの真面目顔の参加者がひたすら叫ぶデモと違い、どこか楽しそう。ブラジルに行ったことがないので、これほどの人数のブラジル人が勢ぞろいするのを見るのは初めて。ちなみにWikipediaによると、2007年の統計ではロンドンには違法合法合わせて13〜16万人以上のブラジル人が住んでおり、主に清掃業、ホテル、宅配便やデリバリー、建設業に従事しているそうだ。

Public demonstrations in Brazil has spread nationwide and has no sign of cooling down after over two weeks (wikipedia). Initially organized to protest increases in bus, train, and metro ticket prices in early June, but came to include other subjects such as corruption, crimes, poor public service such as education and public health, and high-priced World Cup and Olympics.

When we were around Trafalgar Square on 17th last Monday, we heard shouts and musics nearby. So we came closer to the noise, and found lots of Brazilian flags. At the beginning I thought Brazilian football fans gathered to watch the Confederations Cup game, then realised that this was a demonstration to support the protests in their home country. In compare to British demonstrations with serious looking protesters screaming and showing out angrily, Brazilian counterparts looked rather happy and enjoyed taking photos and chatting with their friends. I’ve never been to Brazil and never seen so many Brazilians together in one place! According to Wikipedia, community groups estimated in 2007 that between 130,000 and 160,000 Brazilians were likely to be living in London (I guess including both legally and illegally), and their most common jobs were involved in the cleaning industry, hotel work and catering, other services, couriers, and theconstruction industry.

 

Notes Coffee, Food & Wine or Music & Coffee?

今日も「アイデア」フォルダーからのちょっと古めのネタ（昨日ブログ参照）。コヴェントガーデンにあるカフェ・Notesに行ったのは、昨年9月なので多少今と異なる部分があるかもしれない。

ロンドンの中心部は、家賃が高いせいか資本力のある大規模コーヒーチェーンだらけで、美味しいコーヒーが飲める独立系カフェを見つけるのは至難の業。Notesは、このエリアで「大量生産でない」高品質のコーヒーが飲める、貴重なお店の一つ。Borough Market（バラ・マーケット）を含むロンドン5カ所で、Flat Capというコーヒー屋台を営むRob RobinsonとFabio Ferreiraが経営するNotesは、現在コヴェントガーデン、トラファルガースクウェア、北ロンドンのTileyardに3店舗有するミニ・カフェチェーン（店舗の場所）。お店の外やウェブサイトに書かれているように、コーヒー、食事、そしてワインがいただける。店名のNotesは音譜という意味もあるし、少し前のインターネット情報では「Notes Music & Coffee」と呼んでいるものもあるので、以前は音楽も売りにしていたのだろう（今も？）。Notesではまた折々、コーヒーや食、ワイン、音楽などのイベントも催されている。

ここのエスプレッソは、Square Mile Coffee Roastersの軽めに焙煎したコーヒー豆を使っているので、より繊細なフレーバーが楽しめると言う。また店内には、さまざまなフィルターコーヒーが楽しめるbrew barもある。紅茶の茶葉は、ハイクオリティなお茶を扱うLalani & Coのもの。食べ物は、旬の食材を使った手作りで、朝食からディナーまで間断なく注文できる。ハムやサラミなどのコールドミートは、イタリアやフランスの肉屋や農家から直に仕入れるThe Ham & Cheese Companyから。チーズは、毎週フランスのロワール地方に買い付けに行くというMons Cheesemongersから仕入れるなど、美味しさへのこだわりが感じられる。ワインは飲まなかったのだが、ウェブサイトによると、店内で消費するワインは、小売価格に一律£8の「corkage」（通常、飲み物を持ち込めるBYOまたはBring Your Ownの飲食店でかかる持ち込み料）がかかるだけなので、リーズナブルにワインが楽しめるそう。

リラックスした雰囲気の中でいただいた、サンドイッチとサラダ、そして軽くトーストしたバナナブレッドは、フレッシュで美味。ただ場所柄、週末は混むので、テーブルが空くのを待つことを計算に入れておくべし。

Today’s topic is also from the “idea” folder (yesterday’s blog). I went this Notes cafe in Covent Garden last September, so there may be some changes since then.

Central London is the difficult place to find a good independent coffee shop, and is occupied by big coffee chains who can pay an expensive rent in the premium location. Notes is one of the few places that offer “non mass-produced” coffee in the area. Opened by Rob Robinson and Fabio Ferreira, who run five Flat Cap coffee carts throughout London including Borough Market, Notes is a mini-coffee chain that owns three cafes in Covent Garden, Trafalgar Square and Tileyard in north London (see the locations). As written on its exterior and their website, Notes offers something I can’t live without: coffee (though I am a tea-drinker as well), food and wine. When I check the internet, some websites call “Notes Music & Coffee”, so I guess they offer good music as well, as its name suggests, though I didn’t notice when I was there. They also hosts variety of events related to their specialty; coffee, food, wine and music.

Their espresso is roasted by Square Mile Coffee Roasters, and Notes’ roasts are lighter to create more delicate flavours. They also have a dedicated brew bar for their rotating menu of filter coffees. Their seasonal loose leaf teas are from a boutique tea trading company of Lalani & Co. Foods at Notes are seasonal and home-made, and are served throughout the day; breakfast, lunch and dinner. Their charcuteries are supplied by The Ham & Cheese Company who source direct from butchers and farmers in Italy and France, and their cheeses are from Mons Cheesemongers who bring their produce from St Haon le Chatel in France every week. I haven’t tried their wine, but they have a unique system of a flat ‘corkage’ charge of £8 over the retail price of all wines, to allow their customers to reasonably enjoy their selection of wines.

The cafe was very relaxing, and M’s sandwich and salad were fresh and tasty, and my lightly toasted banana bread was irresistibly good. However, due to its prime location, the weekend may be a nightmare and probably you have to wait a while to be seated.

 

BT ArtBox: Celebrating A British Icon

英大手電気通信事業者・BTが主催、虐待やいじめ、両親の離婚などに悩む子供たちを電話相談を通じてサポートする慈善団体「ChildLine（チャイルドライン）」の設立25年を記念するパブリック・アート・エキシビション「BT ArtBox」が、現在ロンドンで開催中だ。このプロジェクトには、建築家のザハ・ハディッド、ファッション・デザイナーのジャイルズ・ディーコン（Giles Deacon）、ザンドラ・ローズ（Zandra Rhodes）、ジュリアン・マクドナルド（Julien Macdonald）、アーティストのロブ＆ニック・カーター（Rob and Nick Carter）、ライアン・カラナン（Ryan Callanan：写真最上）、マーティン・ウェア（Martyn Ware）、彫刻家のデヴィッド・マック（David Mach）、インテリアデザイナーのニナ・キャンベル（Nina Campbell）、ミュージシャンのニック・ローズ（デュラン・デュラン）、マキシム（ザ・プロディジー）などの著名クリエイターたちが参加。イギリスのアイコンの一つである赤い電話ボックスと同サイズのレプリカを使って創られた80以上のアート作品が、6月15日にトラファルガー広場に1日集結、その後6月18日から7月16日まで、コヴェントガーデンやセント・パンクラス駅、カーナビー・ストリート、ハイド・パーク、水族館のサメの水槽などといった、ロンドンの名所や街角に設置、通行人の目を楽しませている（ロケーション・マップ / 写真：Telegraph紙）。

展示終了後は、イーベイとサザビーズでオークションにかけられ、売上げはChildLineに寄付される予定（詳細）。ロンドンでは今までも、Black Dog Campaign、Big Egg Hunt、Elephant Paradeなど、同じような有名人参加のチャリティ・アート・プロジェクトがいくつも行われている。

BT ArtBox is a public art exhibition, celebrating 25 years of ChildLine, who has been helping vulnerable children since 1986. More than 80 full-size replicas of one of the British icons, the red telephone box, are redesigned into artworks by leading artists and designers, including architect Zaha Hadid; fashion designers Giles Deacon, Zandra Rhodes and Julien Macdonald; artists Rob and Nick Carter, Ryan Callanan and Martyn Ware; sculptor David Mach; interior designer Nina Campbell; Duran Duran’s Nick Rhodes and The Prodigy’s Maxim (more photos: Telegraph).

The project launched on June 15 when a selection of BT ArtBoxes were on display in Trafalgar Square for the day. From June 18 to July 16, BT ArtBoxes are showcased across London’s streets and landmark locations, such as Covent Garden, St Pancras Station, Carnaby Street, Hyde Park and even the shark tank at the London Aquarium (location map). Then, all the boxes will be auctioned off through eBay and Sotheby’s to raise money for ChildLine’s 25th anniversary (more info). London has hosted similar charity art projects helped by celebrities and creators every now and then, such as the Black Dog Campaign, the Big Egg Hunt, and the Elephant Parade.

ロンドンオリンピックまであと500日。トラファルガー広場に設置された大時計のカウントダウンが始まり（BBCニュース1）、チケットの販売が今日朝より開始された（BBCニュース2）。でも東北地震・津波の被害を思うと、日本人としてはお祭り気分にはほど遠い。原子力発電所問題がまだ未解決なので、こちらでもまだまだニュースで取り上げられているが、各国が表明した公的支援以外、メディアは一般人が貢献できる寄付や支援については、ほとんど取り上げていない。ハイチ大地震や東南アジアを襲った津波の際は、もっとニュースで支援を呼びかけたり、テレビCMや新聞広告を見たような気がしたのだが。その点、アメリカは日本の同盟国だということもあるのか、ネットで調べていても情報も多いし、セレブリティを含む人々の関心も高いと感じる。

その中で、何とか支援の輪を広げようと、慈善団体への寄付はもちろん、チャリティ・イベントやコンサートの企画、募金活動の組織、フェイスブックやミクシィでの情報交換など、頑張っている多くの在英日本人たちがいる。上のビデオは、日本人留学生が折り鶴を折って、LSE（ロンドン・スクール・オブ・エコノミクス）の前で募金活動をしている様子。日本人だけじゃなくて、イギリス人や他の国の人たちも、自分たちでも企画をしてくれると、もっと嬉しいんだけれど。

Today a giant clock placed in Trafalgar Square started counting down 500 days until the start of the London Olympics (BBC news 1), and 6.6 million Olympic tickets became available this morning (BBC news 2). But when I think about the victims of Japan Tohoku earthquake and Tsunami, I am not in a mood at all to celebrate all these Olympic stuffs. The media coverage is still big here in UK, as problems at nuclear power stations haven’t been solved yet. However, strangely the media rarely talks about help that ordinary people can do, rather than official aid from each country. I think I saw more TV commercials and newspaper ads, as well as information for charity on news programs for Haiti earthquake and Boxing Day Tsunami. On the other hand, I feel like Americans, including celebs, are more supportive and helpful, and more information for aids in the US – probably because USA and Japan are important allies.

There are many Japanese living in UK, trying to help the victims, not only donating to charities, but also organizing charity events and concerts, fundraising on a street, exchanging support information on local web community boards and SNS such as facebook and Mixi (Japan’s largest SNS community). The video above was taken from BBC London news, covering Japanese students making Origami cranes and fundraising in front of LSE. I wish the circle of support will spread, not only within Japanese community in UK, but also to British public and people from other countries – yes, Japan is the third largest economy in the world and you may think help is unnecessary, but the damage is enormous with astronomical cost or recovery, and the government has huge debt and the country is still in long-lasting recession. Of course Japanese government and people must help with each other too, but I am afraid it is not enough. Many people in the affected areas are elderly as young generation left for bigger cities and can’t afford to pay 30-year morgage, and fishermen and farmers on the coast are not millionaires as well…
