Castles in Kent: Leeds Castle

ロンドンの南東に位置するケント州は、一番端のドーバーやマーゲートでも車で2時間弱と、ロンドンからの日帰りや短期旅行にぴったりの場所。英仏海峡トンネルを渡ってやってくるヨーロッパ人も多く、私たちが訪れた時も、駐車場には、オランダやドイツ、ベルギーナンバーの車がたくさん停まっていた。お隣の国なのに、意外にフランス人は少ない。恐らくこの肌寒いイギリスじゃなく、どこかのビーチで寝転がって、肌でも焼いているのかな。

今回の小旅行の最初の訪問地は、イングランドで最も美しい明媚なお城の一つで、「loveliest castle in the world（世界で最も美しいお城）」とも称されるLeeds Castle（リーズ城）。湖に浮かぶ2つの島にまたがるこのお城は紀元1119年に建立、多くの王室や貴族の住まいとして、また要塞、刑務所、病後療養所としても使用された。最後の私的所有者であったLady Baillie（レディ・ベイリー）は、1926年にリーズ城を購入したのち、インテリアを全面的に改装し、優雅なお屋敷に生まれ変わらせた。

敷地内はお城や庭園の他、お城が一望できるレストランやカフェ、ショップ、世界中から集められた100種以上の鳥が見られる飼鳥園、洞窟のあるmaze（迷路庭園）、イギリス唯一の犬の首輪博物館、子供の遊び場、ワイン用ブドウ園、果てはゴルフコースまである。ただ、ゴルフコースがお城のすぐ横にあるのはいただけない。また湖上からお城を眺められるBlack Swan（黒鳥：このお城のシンボルでもある）フェリーボートや、入口からお城を結ぶElsie（エルシー）castle trainもあり、いようと思えば一日中いられるほど盛りだくさんなだけに入場料も高く、大人一人 £18.50なり。私たちはお城と庭園以外は興味がないけれど、手入れの行き届いたこの美しいお城は高額の入場料に値する。

Kent is a county situated in southeast of London. To reach the furthest towns such as Dover and Margate takes less than two hours from central London, and it is perfect place for a day excursion and a short trip for Londoners. There are also many European tourists coming through Channel Tunnel, and we saw many cars from Netherlands, Germany and Belgium around there. Not many from closest neighbor France – probably French would prefer lying down on the beach and getting tan to going around chilly and cloudy British isle.

The first stop for our trip this time is the Leeds Castle, setting on two islands and one of England’s most picturesque castles, often described as the ‘loveliest castle in the world.’ Dating back to 1119,  it has been home to royalty and nobles, as well as being used as a garrison, a prison, and a convalescent home. The last private owner of the castle was Lady Baillie, who purchased it in 1926 and refurbished its interior to transform the castle into an elegant country residence. She generously opened this gorgeous residence to the public in 1976.

Other than the magnificent castle and beautiful garden, the castle grounds have many other attractions, though some of which are not of our interests: a restaurant, kiosks and souvenir shops; an aviary housing over 100 species of birds from all over the world; a maze with a grotto; UK’s only museum of dog collars; kids’ playgrounds; its own vineyard; and even a golf course, though it is ugly to see it right next to the castle. There are also the Black Swan (a symbol of this castle) ferry boat and the ‘Elsie’ castle train that connects the main entrance and the castle, for alternative ways to explore the estate. All these attractions don’t come cheap – £18.50@adult. We are only interested in the castle and garden,but it is worth to pay up the high price to see this beautiful castle and its estate well taken care of.

Frozen Britain: the Country in Chaos…Again

先週金曜日から北ヨーロッパを襲った大寒波により、またもやイギリスの交通網はパニックに陥った（参考記事/過去のブログ）。クリスマスを間近に控え、一年で最も混雑するこの時期にあたったのも最悪のタイミング。ロンドンでも最低クリスマスまでは最高気温は1度を超えず、しばらく降り積もった雪が解けそうな気配もない。国際線利用者数世界一を誇るヒースロー空港は、ほとんど麻痺状態。キャンセルが相次ぎ、途方に暮れた乗客は、いつ来るとも分からない吉報を待つしかない。

UK’s traffic has been paralyzed since Friday, due to the big freeze affecting Northern Europe (related article/past entry of my blog). It’s the busiest time of the year just before Christmas and the cold front came at the worst timing. The highest temperature in London has been just 1º, and there is no sign that the snow piled up on the street would melt away, at least until Christmas. London’s Heathrow airport, one of the busiest airport in the world, has been experiencing numerous flight cancellations and severe delays, and has been barely functioning. Thousands of desperate passengers have to bare with never-ending waiting on the floor of the airport, with a slightest hope of good news, that may not come for at least few more days.

航空便だけじゃない。鉄道も遅れやキャンセルが目立ち、ユーロスターの発着駅であるセント・パンクラス駅は、行列を作る客約6,000人が構内に入りきらず駅をぐるっと半周、その長さは何と約2km。この寒空の中7時間待ちだとか（以下ビデオ/参考記事）。それでも、その日に運良く電車に乗れるという保証はない。そんな人たちを不憫に思ってか、Salvation Army（救世軍）のバンが駅にきて、紅茶やコーヒーの暖かい飲み物を人々に振る舞った（記事）。

Not only the air traffic, but rail networks have had severe disturbances such as delays and cancellations. Today at St Pancras International station, around 6,000 passengers of Eurostar have been waiting on a queue, stretching 1.2 miles/2km around the station, for seven hours under this freezing sky (video below/related article). There is no guarantee that they could get on the board today, though. For these poor passengers, Salvation Army‘s mobile canteen came on site, handing out hot tea and coffee for a little warmth (article).

この混乱に巻き込まれた方々には、本当にお気の毒と言う他ない。政府は、これは何十年も経験した事のない異常事態というが、厳しい寒波もこれで3年目。昨日のニュースに出ていた気候学者によると、厳冬傾向は今後も続くかもしれないそうだ。寒いのは苦手なんだけどなあ。。。

There is nothing I can say but sorry to these people in the chaos. The government insists that this is the extreme weather that country hadn’t experienced for decades, but UK has encountered this severe cold winter three years in a row. According to a meteorologist on BBC news yesterday, this trend may continue despite the global warming… I hate cold!!

St. Pancras International Railway Station & Southeastern HS1 Train Service

30年来という寒い冬がようやく終わりを告げ、春らしい気候になってきたので、イングランド南東部ケント州にある、英国国教会の総本山・カンタベリーに日帰りで行ってきた。カンタベリーへは、2009年12月に、セント・パンクラス駅（St. Pancras International）とケント州を結ぶ、サウスイースタン鉄道の高速列車・Javelin Trainの完全運行が始まった（記事参照）ので、ロンドンから直行で57分で行けるようになった。以前のガイドブックによると、ビクトリア駅から1時間半かかっていたそうなので、かなりの時間の短縮になる。

1868年にオープンしたセント・パンクラス駅は、セントパンクラス・チャンバーズと呼ばれる、お城か宮殿を思わせる威風堂々としたヴィクトリア朝ネオ・ゴシック建築が特徴。2000年代に大がかりな拡張・改修工事が行われ、2007年11月にイギリスの高速新線HS1 (CTRL) の開業にともない、ユーロスターの発着駅がウォータールー駅からセント・パンクラス駅に移管、2007年11月14日に、エリザベス女王を迎えて記念式典が行われた。ユーロスター以外にも、イングランド中東部へ向かうイースト・ミッドランズ・トレインズ（East Midlands Trains)、ロンドンを南北に貫通して南部のブライトンと北はベッドフォードを結ぶファースト・キャピタル・コネクト（First Capital Connect）のテムズリンク系統、そしてサウスイースタン（Southeastern）と、3つのナショナル・レール網の列車が発着する。私の家からは、セント・パンクラス駅が最寄りのロンドンの主要駅の1つなので、旅行時のアクセスもずいぶん便利になった。ちなみに、サウスイースタンのプラットホームは、ビクトリア朝の建物の後ろに新築されたガラス張りの建物内にある（写真2枚目）。

クラス395電車（British Rail Class 395）と呼ばれるJavelin Trainは、日本の車両メーカー（日立製作所）が初めて製作したヨーロッパの高速鉄道車両で、最高時速140マイル（225km）と、イギリスで最速。2012年に開催予定のロンドン・オリンピックに向けて運行される、オリンピックジャベリン（Olympic Javelin）にも使用される予定だ。この高速電車の開通で、ケント州からロンドンへの通勤時間が大幅に短縮されるので、住宅価格が安くて自然も多く、フランスへのアクセスも容易な、ケント州へ移り住む人が増えると予想されている。ただ問題は、ヨーッロッパ諸国より平均50％も割高と言われる、ヨーロッパ一高いとされる列車料金（BBC記事参照）。カンタベリーへは、オフピーク料金日帰り往復＋高速新線HS1利用料（Off-Peak Day Return）で£27.90、通常日帰り料金で£31.50。イギリスの列車運賃は、オフピーク料金、日帰りまたは1ヶ月有効かなどで値段が変わり、混雑時間外で利用可能のオフピーク料金も、いつがオフピークになるかはその路線によって違うなど、ややこしいことこの上ない。片道料金はかなり割高になる（カンタベリー行き片道料金で£27.80、往復料金とたった10ペンスの違い）ので、旅行の際は往復切符を買った方が断然お得。列車の時刻や料金はナショナル・レールのウェブサイトで検索できる。

After the coldest winter in 30 years and finally the spring seems to have come to London – so I made a day-trip to Canterbury in Kent in South East England the other day. High-speed rail service HS1 (High Speed 1) by Southeastern, connecting London and Kent, opened for business in December 2009 (see more in Mailonline article). It used to take about an hour and half from Victoria station to Canterbury by train, according to the old guidebook, but now it takes only 57 minutes with a direct service – a big slash of the journey time.

Opened in 1868, St Pancras railway station, also known as St Pancras International, looks like a grand palace or castle with its impressive Victorian gothic architecture called St.Pancras chambers. The complex was renovated and expanded during the 2000s and reopened on November 14, 2007, with a ceremony attended by the Queen. Eurostar services was transferred from Waterloo on the same day, with a completion of Channel Tunnel Rail Link (CTRL). Other than Eurostar service, there are also four National Rail network services from St Pancras station; East Midlands Trains that ran services to the North of England, First Capital Connect that provides train services from Bedford and Luton through London and down to Brighton, and Southeastern high speed train service. St.Pancras is one of the most convenient railway station from us and travel to outside London is much easier now. Southeastern trains leave from the platforms in the new glass building behind the historic structure (see in the second photo).

Javelin or British Rail Class 395 trains is the Britain’s first 140mph (225km/h maximum speed) train, built in Japan. Class 395 trains will be used to provide the Javelin shuttle service for visitors to the Olympic Games’ main venue in Stratford during the 2012 Summer Olympics as well. It’s now far quicker to travel into central London from Kent with HS1 train service, and many Londoners are keen to make the move to Kent, where is lot greener, has easy access to France with Eurostar, and most of all, the house prices are much cheaper. The only setback could be the costly train fares to London – ticket prices went up by around 20% with HS1. For example, Off-Peak Day Return to Canterbury costs £27.90, and Anytime Day Return is £31.50.

On average, UK train fares are 50% higher than other European countries (see details in BBC article). It is also quite complicated to figure out a ticket pric,e as there are so many different prices; off-peak single/return (off-peak time varies depending on a route), Anytime single/return, including/excluding HS1 service, First class/standard, same day travel or return within 1 month, etc, etc. One way ticket is usually much more expensive than a return ticket – for example, Cheapest Standard Single to Canterbury is £27.80, on the other hand, Off-Peak Day Return is £27.90 – just 10p more than one way ticket. Severe Cold Weather and Traffic Chaos in UK

最近のロンドンは寒い。気温は毎日0度前後。それでも週末は晴れたから良かったけれど、今日は午後に大雪が降り、ロンドンの街並みも雪に覆われた。利用していたバスが、事故か何かの影響でその先が通行止めになったからと途中で止まってしまい、残りは歩いて帰るはめに。4駅程だったけれど、ベチャベチャの雪の上を30分強歩くのは辛い。それに、そこかしこに悪ガキが隠れていて、ぼーっとしていると、雪の玉がどこからか飛んでくる。

イギリスだけでなく、今はヨーロッパ中が大寒波に見舞われており、交通機関は大混乱。クリスマス帰省・旅行客の足に支障をきたしている。チューブ（地下鉄）や鉄道、航空便は遅延・欠航が相次ぎ、路面凍結や雪で交通事故も多数報告されている（BBC News）。先ほどのニュースでは、ルートン空港が悪天候のため閉鎖されたという。フランス・ベルギーとイギリスを結ぶユーロスターは、今日でもう3日間運休しており、100,000人もの乗客が足止めを食らっている。19日には英仏海峡トンネルで、ユーロスターいわく「fulffy French snow（フランスでのふわふわした雪）」が原因の故障で、列車5台が立ち往生。何台かの客は救出されたそうだが、2,000人以上が数時間から最長16時間もの間、車内に閉じ込められた。以下のビデオは車内で15時間を過ごした怒れる家族。ユーロスター側から何の説明もなく、乗組員のフランス人は英語が喋れず（喋らず？）。その間飲み物も食べ物もなし。トイレは2つだけで、水が流れないので、排泄物が8cm以上も溜まっていたそう。電気もつかず、暗闇の中夜を過ごしたそう。ひどい話だ。

ユーロスターは明日から部分的に復旧する予定だそうだが、この運休中の予約客を優先、その後は老人やどうしても利用が必要な人を優先に割り当てていくので、明日以降の予約客は本当に必要な場合以外は利用しないよう、忠告している（下は、新聞に掲載された、ユーロスターからのお知らせ）。この1件でユーロスター、そしてイギリス人のフランス人に対する評判もガタ落ちしてしまった。

It’s been freezing cold in London recently. The temperature is around 0°. It was OK on weekend as it was sunny as well, but today there was heavy snow in the afternoon, covering the city in white. The bus I took suddenly stopped and didn’t travel further, due to the accident or something ahead and it was forced to wait. Though it was only 4 stops away from home and 30 minutes walk, it was hard to walk on the slippery wet and melted snow, going through a thread of random snowball attacks by obnoxious kids hiding behind walls or in a park in front of my apartment.

Not only UK but Europe is suffering with severe winter weather and traffic chaos, which affects tens of thousands of people who travel during the holiday season. In the UK, delays and cancellations are reported for many flights, trains, and tube lines, and Luton airport — closed due to snow. On the road, traffic jams have been seen due to the snow and accidents and AA has been busy rescuing people on the road (BBC News). Eurostar, which connects UK and France / Belgium, has suspended all the services for 3 days and has disrupted 100,000 people’s travel plan, after “fulffy French snow” in France created excessive condensation in the channel tunnel between England and France, causing electrics to fail and 5 trains to become stuck on December 19. More than 2,000 people were trapped inside the tunnel – some trains were evacuated, but other passengers were forced to remain on board, for hours up to 16 hours, without food and water supply! Below is the video of a furious family, stuck in the train for 15 hours; they complained that the passengers were treated like animals and with no explanation, no food, water, oxygen, electricity and light, no medics, with only 2 available toilets with no flushing water and 3 inches of excrement (or poo) and urine piled up… They were really mad at French attendants, for being rude and ignorant, and ‘those French even didn’t speak English’ (or acted that they didn’t??).

Eurostar is expected to resume partial service tomorrow on Tuesday, but the priority will be given to the elderly and the vulnerable, and passengers that should have travelled on Friday and Saturday. Eurostar advises to customers holding booking in the next few days from tomorrow is to only travel if it is absolutely necessary (as in the ‘notice’ published on the newspaper). With the incident, the way Eurostar handle of the accident, Eurostar’s reputation has gone down the drain, as well as the British image of French people…

Worst Storm of the Year hit Southern England

最大風速100mph（45m/s）を記録した、今年最強のStorm（嵐・暴風）がイギリス南部を襲った。豪雨による洪水や雷、建物・民家の損傷なども各地で報告されており、多くのフェリー便は欠航、鉄道も遅れやキャンセルが出ている。雨が少なく比較的温暖だった今年の秋だが、これを境に変化するそうだ。

内陸部のロンドンでも最大風速70mph（31.5m/s）を記録、家の中にいても、ビュービューと風の音が聞こえてくる。うちのアパートは、以前倉庫だか何だか、産業施設だった建物を改造したもので、床から天井まである窓から、すきま風が少し漏れてくる。イギリスでは冬場にGale（強風，疾風）の日が多く、今日は最高気温が14度程度と、それほど低くなかったので良かったけれど、寒い日はかなり辛い。先ほど外出した際は、落ち葉や折れた枝、段ボール、ゴミなどが至る所に散乱。自転車だったので、向かい風にあたると必死でペダルをこいでも全然前に進まない。飛んで来た物が当たって怪我なんかしたくないので、今日は早々に帰宅。安全な家の中から、外の劇的な様子を眺めている。

The strongest storm in this year attacked Southern part of England and Wales today. Gale-force winds and heavy rain have brought flooding and damages including bringing down trees and branches, and delays and cancellation of the trains and ferries are reported. It is said that the first half of the autumn was unseasonably mild and pretty dry but that’s all changed now.

The winds reached a “rare” 70mph inland in London, and I have been constantly hearing the strong wind while I am at home. Our apartment building is a former industrial warehouse and the wind come inside a little bit through the large floor-to-ceiling windows. Today is rather mild and the highest temperature was around 14°C, but Gale is seen quite often in the winter in London, and it could be quite cold when the temperature is low and strong wind blows. I had to go through a mess of fallen leaves, broken branches, cardboards, and trashes scattered all over when I went out earlier. I went out with my bike, I couldn’t barely move forward with headwinds, no matter how hard I pedaled. I didn’t want to get hurt with flying objects and came back as soon as possible. Now I am in my safe space and looking pretty dramatic sight outside.
