American Burger Chains Come to London: Five Guys

お次は、同じくコヴェントガーデンのロングエイカーにあるFive Guys。1986年にバージニア州で創業したFive Guysは、アメリカ国内に1000店舗、さらに1500店舗が計画中とアメリカで急成長を遂げているチェーンで、Shake Shackに比べて規模は格段に大きい。多くの都市やメディアで「ベストバーガー」の呼び声も高く、あのオバマ大統領もここのハンバーガーが好物だそうだ。

NY生まれの洗練されたShake Shackに比べ、Five Guysはいかにもアメリカのハンバーガー店や国道沿いにあるダイナーと言った趣で、赤白チェックが基調のインテリアはお世辞にもお洒落とは言えない。見た目は超アメリカンなFive Guysだが、時節柄ヘルシー志向は取り入れている。店内には冷蔵庫のみで冷凍庫は置かず、冷凍食材は使っていない。品質の高い生の牛肉を使い、油もピーナッツオイルのみ使用しているという。カロリーや脂質、糖分、塩分等、商品の栄養表示も、ウェブサイトで見ることが出来る。でも、無骨なアルミホイルに包まれて出てきたハンバーガーは脂っこく、食べるうちに手が油や肉汁でベチャベチャに。Shake Shackの小さめのバーガーに比べると（ダブルと指定しないとシングルが出てくる）、こちらの普通サイズのバーガーは巨大。女性なら「little burger」で充分お腹が膨れそう。カウンターの前においてある大きな箱に入った殻入りピーナッツは無料だそうだが、ハンバーガーにピーナッツは合わないと思うのは私だけ？

Next is Five Guys on Long Acre. Founded in Virginia in 1986, Five Guys is the fastest-growing fast food chain in the United States with 1,000 locations nationwide and over 1500 units in development, and is much bigger chain than Shake Shack. Five Guys has received many awards as “best burger” in US, and even Barack Obama is known to be the fan of their burger.

In compare to more sleek Shake Shack shop, Five Guys is more rough and represents stereotypical American burger shops or roadside diners. Inside is decorated with red-and-white checkered design and can’t be called fashionable, even compared to recently rebuilt McDonald’s.

Five Guys claims that they use only fresh roll stamped prime beef, and there are no freezers but just coolers and nothing is ever frozen. Only Peanut oil is used, and you can even check nutrition information (calories, fat, sugars, salt etc.) online! However, their burger, wrapped with bare aluminium foil, was messy and greasy, and made my hand full of oil and meat juice. In compare to petit-size Shake Shack‘s burger (served single unless you order double), their ‘normal’ burger is double the size, and women would be full with just “little burger”. Their complimentary peanuts in shells can be a good service for some (you can find in a big box in front of the counter), but I don’t think peanuts and burger would create a good harmony – at least to me.

Olympic Women’s Football Semi Final & Final @ Wembley Stadium

ロンドン・オリンピックが終わってしまった。イギリスの誇る歴代の大物歌手たちが登場した昨夜の閉会式は、ミュージック・フェスティバルか、日本で言うと紅白歌合戦特別版といった趣の、スポーツとはあまり関係のない演出だったけれど、懐メロから最新ヒット曲まで一挙に聞けて、イギリス人はかなり盛り上がったようだ。私達はというと、好みじゃない音楽を3時間も聞かされ飽き飽きしてしまったけれど。

期間中はテレビ、アプリ、ウェブを駆使してつぶさに結果をチェックしていたので、オリンピックが終わった今、大きな空虚感を感じる。一介の観客でさえそうなのだから、参加選手たちが燃え尽き症候群に陥ってしまう気持ちがよく分かる。

London Olympic is over. Last night’s closing ceremony was nothing much to do with sports but more like Diamond Jubilee Concert, but British seem to have fascinated to watch generations of big names singing old classics to latest hits, though we got a bit bored listening to the music I’d never heard and in fact those musics were not my cup of tea. Also I didn’t understand “Monty Python” part as I’ve never seen it, and I believe I am not the only one in the world.

I was into following the olympic games everyday on TV, web and Olympic apps, and now I feel empty. I am just an audience, but I completely understand some Olympic athletes experience burn-out syndrome after the Games.

時間は逆のぼるが、日本全国の期待を集めたなでしこが、プレッシャーにも負けず大活躍、決勝まで勝ち上がった。まだどのチームが勝ち上がるかも分からない次点で、願掛けも兼ねて買っておいたウェンブリー・スタジアムでの準決勝・決勝戦のチケットが無駄にならなかった。ちなみに準決勝のチケット代は最高Aクラスで1枚60ポンド、決勝は最高Aクラスで1枚125ポンド也。

This is retrospective story, but I want to share my experience in women’s football semi-final and final at London’s Wembley Stadium, after the quarter final in Cardiff. I bought those tickets before knowing who would play, hoping that Japanese team (aka Nadeshiko Japan) would go through. Since the historic victory against USA at last year’s Women’s World Cup, Nadeshiko Japan had been burdened with so much expectation and pressure from Japanese people (like Jessica Ennis for British), and they met their expectation. My tickets were not wasted after all – I paid £60 for semi-final and £125 for final for both A class tickets, and it was well worth it!

キャパシティ9万人でヨーロッパ第二位の大きさを誇り、サッカーの聖地とも呼ばれるウェンブリー・スタジアムでの準決勝の相手はフランス。ウェンブリー・パーク駅から続々と観客が集まってくる。

The semi-final was Japan vs France at the Europe’s second biggest Wembley Stadium with massive 90,000 capacity. People after people were coming toward the stadium from nearby Wembley Park station.

入口では、男女別にセキュリティチェックがある。通常、サッカーの試合は男性が多いのだけれど、さすがに女子サッカーなので女性が多数派。15分ほど並んでようやく通過。

There were separate search lanes for men and women. Normally majority of the football audience is men, but this time there were more women than men. I took about 15 minutes to go through the gate.

両国の国家斉唱。夕方5時スタートと時間が早いせいか、左右ゴール裏はほぼ空席、東京オリンピック誘致の垂れ幕がちゃっかり陣取る。奥のサイド席も空席が目立つ。

The time for national anthems of both countries before the game. Big chunk of seats were unoccupied, probably because the game started at 5pm and not many 9-5 working people couldn’t attend. You can see a banner “Tokyo 2020“, hold up by Japanese Olympic Committee gangs?

この日の観客数はなんと6万1482人。

Attendance of the match was 62,482. Wow!

最後はフランスの猛反撃にさらされながらも、2対1でなでしこが勝利。決勝進出を決める。

Nadeshiko Japan won 2-1, despite of fierce attack by France on the second half. Well done, girls!

いよいよ決勝戦。夜7時45分スタートで会社帰りの人も来られることもあり、準決勝より混雑している。

The final started at 19:45 and there were much more people coming than the semi final.

アメリカ国旗に身を包み、勝つ気満々のアメリカ人が目立つ。日本人サポーター、ちょっと気迫負け。。。

Americans, wrapped themselves with Stars and Stripes, were all pumped up and cheering everywhere, while Japanese supporters were quieter and less visible…

準決勝時と比べ、高級感漂うClub Wembleyレベル2。シャンパン・バーや座席サービスのレストランも。観覧席もクッション付きで、座り心地もベター。

In compared to Level 1 at the semi-final, Club Wembley level 2 area was more upscale, with a table service restaurant and a champaign bar. The padded seat here was more comfortable than Level 1 seat.

観客がパネルを掲げて「London 2012」を表示。昨年W杯来の日米因縁の対決とあって、女子サッカーとしては過去最高の観客数8万203人を記録。私の日本人の知り合いの80％（主観ですが）が来場、総数5万人と言われる在英日本人が勢揃いしたかと思うほど、多くの日本人が観戦した。

Audience put up the panels to show “London 2012”. The attendance of the match was massive 80,203, the record highest as a women’s football match. About 80% of my Japanese friends got the tickets, and there were so many Japanese in the stadium as if all 50,000 Japanese who live in UK came to the stadium.

2−0と先行され、健闘虚しく2−1で敗れる。試合後、アメリカのカーリ・ロイド選手さえ「アメリカがペナルティを取られなかったのはとてもラッキーだった」と認めているように、レフェリーがペナルティエリアでのアメリカ側のハンドを取らなかったことが悔しい。結果は同じだったとしても、勝利のチャンスはあったかもしれないと言うのが、ファンの正直な思い。アメリカは準決勝のカナダ戦でも、3−2でリードされている時に、カナダのゴールキーパーがボールを規定時間以上持っていたとしてフリーキックを与えられたり、カナダ側のハンドとして賛否両論のペナルティキックが与えられたりして、延長戦で勝利した（英語版Wikipedia）。なんとラッキーな（ちょっと嫌み）！でも、どうせ判定は変わらないのだし、カナダ選手達のようにはっきり文句を言うのではなく（このことでFIFAより懲罰を受けるかも）、レフェリーの判断を尊重したなでしこは賢明か。

表彰式では、人種差別容認発言やFIFA理事の不正疑惑で悪評高いFIFAのゼップ・ブラッター会長に大きなブーイング。そもそもこの日のことも、ゴール判定技術やビデオ判定などに消極的なFIFAの責任なのだ。ブーイングも当然。

Nadeshiko Japan lost 2-1, despite of their continuous attacks during the game. As a Japanese supporter, I was quite upset that the German referee didn’t give a penalty to USA for the handball in the penalty area made by Tobin Heath, although it might haven’t affected the result. In fact, replays showed a clear handball, and even Carli Lloyd admitted  in post-match interviews that the USA were very lucky to go unpenalized. There was also another controversy about what happened during the semi-final, favouring to US against Canada. Lucky you, Americans! (see details on Wikipedia) But Japanese players were wiser just accept the referee’s judgement, in compare to Canadians who raised their doubts against referee, which risk them a disciplinary action by FIFA. And at the end, the result won’t change anyway. But I feel very sorry for Canadians.

There was big booing against unpopular president of FIFA, Sepp Blatter who attended the medal ceremony. At the end of the day, everything is FIFA’s fault refusing to introduce technological assistance such as  goal-line technology or video replays to avoid misjudgement, for some strange reasons.

試合直後は涙に暮れた彼女たちも、表彰式では晴れ晴れとした素敵な笑顔。スコア上では負けたけれど、試合内容は互角かそれ以上。強い団結力と勝利への思い、小さい体でデッカいアメリカ人選手たちと戦う姿は、見る者皆に勇気と感動を与えてくれた。最高のオリンピック経験をさせてくれてありがとう！

After lots of tears, the girls showed us great smiles at the medal ceremony. Although they lost, the game was neck and neck or they played even better, for my eyes. Great teamwork and determination. Small Japanese players who played with big Americans gave all Japanese the courage and power. Thank you for such a wonderful Olympic experience to us!!

。。。とここまでは良かったけれど、準決勝も決勝も、試合の後が悪夢。何万人と言う人波が最寄りのWembley Park（ウェンブリー・パーク）駅に押し寄せ、身動きできない。しかも準決勝の日は、信号機の異常かなんかで（よくあることだが）メトロポリタン線に遅れが出た。駅への沿道はフェンスでブロックされているので、列を抜け出すことも出来ない。決勝戦の後、通常45分ほどの道程を、2時間かけて夜1時にやっと家に帰り着いた。楽しかったけれど、疲れた。。。

But this is not the end of the story – coming back home was a true nightmare for both days. Tens of thousands of people rushing to the station stuck and couldn’t move for a while. Metropolitan line had problem of signal failure after the semi final, which often happens here in London. The path to the station was blocked on the sides and couldn’t escape once you went inside. It took two hours to go back home after the final which normally takes only 45-minutes, and it was 1 am when I finally reached home. The game was exciting, but it was exhausting as well…

Old Street’s Pret A Manger got Makeover

イギリスの大手サンドイッチ・チェーン、Pret A Manger（プレタ・マンジェ）のCity Road店が最近リニューアルした。隣にあったPiya Piyaというタイレストラン＆ラウンジを吸収してスペース倍増。80年代風のちょっと時代遅れだったインテリアは、チェーンっぽさは否めないけど現代風に取って代わり、ジェイミー・オリバーが経営するイタリアン・チェーン、Jamie’s Italianを彷彿させる（ちょっと嫌み）。向かいのSUBWAYより断然いい。

イギリスに住んでいる人なら誰でも知っているPret A Manger（フランス語「prêt à manger」=英語「ready to eat（すぐ食べれるといったニュアンス）」）、イギリス在住で既に蘊蓄をご存知の方は飛ばしてくださいませ。

プレタ・マンジェは1986年に、友人であるSinclair Beecham（シンクレア・ビーチャム）とJulian Metcalfe（ジュリアン・メットカーフ。後に寿司チェーンのItsuを創業）がロンドンで立ち上げた。Wikipediaによると2007年以降、多くの店名が「Pret（プレット）」に代わり、今後10年間で全ての店を「Pret」に統一する計画だそう。Pretは多種のサンドイッチの他、スープやサラダ、寿司、マフィンやクロワッサン、ブラウニーなどのデザート類、そして自社ブランドの冷たい飲み物やオーガニックの紅茶やコーヒー（エスプレッソは美味しくないけれど）を扱う（メニュー。ウェブではカロリーや成分の表示あり）。現在、イギリスをメインに、アメリカや香港に265店舗を展開するが、フランチャイズは社のポリシーで拒否しているのだそう。

Pretのサンドイッチは、各店舗にあるキッチンで毎日新鮮な素材を使って作られ、化学物質や添加物、保存料は使用しないという。でも過去の研究で、Pretのサンドイッチを含むパッケージ入りのサンドイッチは、塩分が高いことを指摘されたことも（BBCニュース）。その日に売れ残った商品は、ホームレスに食べ物を提供する慈善団体によって回収される。

自称グルメの人たちやフード・ブロガーには、チェーン店のことを良く書くのは恥だと思ってる人もいるけれど、独立系のお店だって美味しいとは限らない（チェーン以下のところも多い）。特上の食べ物は期待しないけれど、チェーンだって悪くないところもある。マヨネーズや塩分がちょっと多いかなという気もするけれど、Pretはチェーン系サンドイッチの中では一番のお気に入り。空港でお腹が空いたら立ち寄るし（どちらにせよチェーンしかないし）、お天気が悪かったりして遠出したくない時もお世話になっている。

Pret A Manger City road at the south of Old Street station got revamp and now it looks like Jamie’s Italian (that’s my impression). The space has become double, absorbing failed Piya Piya Thai restaurant & lounge next door, I believe. Also its 80’s look including metallic chairs was replaced by more up-to-date (but still a bit chain-y) choice, and it is far better than SUBWAY across the street.

Everyone in UK knows Pret A Manger (prêt à manger=“ready to eat” in French) or simply Pret, a big sandwich chain. You can skip this if you already know well about Pret. I am writing this to people, if any, who have no clue about the chain.

Pret a Manger was founded in London in 1986 by friends Sinclair Beecham and Julian Metcalfe, who later founded the sushi chain Itsu. Most stores have been branded as “Pret” since 2007, according to Wikipedia, and the company aims to rename all of its stores “Pret” in the next ten years. Pret sells sandwiches of many kinds, soups, salads, sushi (stay away from it!), pastries and sweets, as well as cold drinks, organic teas and unimpressive coffee (menu: you can also check calories and nutritional values). The chain now has 265 shops (but refuses franchise) worldwide, mostly in the UK and some in USA and Hong Kong.

Pret claims that their “proper sandwiches” are made  on the day of purchase at each location, using natural ingredients without any chemicals, additives and preservatives. But it was reported that a research revealed that pre-packed sandwiches contain high amount of salt including Pret’s (BBC News). Those left unsold at the end of the day are collected by charities that provide food to the homeless.

People, especially foodies and food bloggers, are embarrassed to talk good about a chain, but why not? Independent shop doesn’t mean that they have a great food or often even worse. I don’t expect too much from chains, but some of them have decent standard. Maybe a bit too much mayonaise or salt, but Pret is our favorite choice for sandwiches (but not for espresso) at UK airports where you see only chains anyways, or whenever we don’t want to go far due to the terrible weather.

Rise of Posh Pop and Rock Musicians

今日のタイムズ紙で面白い記事を読んだ。歴史的に上流社会への反抗とされ、1960年代から90年代には労働者階級出身者に独占されていたポップやロック界に、良家の子女たちが増えてきているのだそうだ。ポップやロック・スターになることは、かつて貧しい少年少女たちの夢と希望であり、すでに人生の選択肢がたくさんある良家の子息たちにとっては、ミュージシャンになる事は、恥だとされていた。だからかつて、裕福な家庭に育ったミュージシャンたちは、自分の経歴を隠そうとしていた。でも時代は変わった。

この記事は、良家の子女が現在、ポップやロック界に幅を利かせつつある理由をいくつか挙げている。一つは、育ちの良い彼らはマナーがよく丁寧で好ましく、世界最大の音楽市場で、才能や態度と同時にマナーの良さが重要であるアメリカ進出に役立つから。だから、「バッド・ボーイ」的イメージの労働者階級出身の人気バンド、Oasis（オアシス）やArctic Monkeys（アークティック・モンキーズ）はアメリカで成功できなかった、と結論づけている。また良家の子女が通うパブリック・スクール（私立学校）は、勤勉をモットーとし、これもまた、勤勉さが尊重されるアメリカでの成功に役立つと言う。エリート教育によって培われる自信も、ステージに立つ上で重要だ。

その他の理由としては、パブリック・スクールの設備の良さ、また新入生が合唱テストを受けさせるなど音楽的伝統を挙げる。そして昔のパブリック・スクールの先生は、ロック音楽なぞ子供のお遊びだとバカにしていたけれど、自身がポップや音楽を聴いて育った若手の先生は、キャリアの選択肢の一つとして、生徒に音楽の道を目指す事もむしろ奨励する。

中・上流階級が支持する保守党が先の選挙で勝ち、イートン校・オックスフォード大学出身の「ええとこのぼんぼん」、デーヴィッド・キャメロンが首相となり、いまだ階級社会の影響で、割合にしてたった7％程度のパブリック・スクール卒業生が弁護士、医者、ジャーナリスト、CEOなど、エリートと言われる職業の過半数を占める中（参考サイト）、音楽まで良家の子女に独占されるとなると、貧しい家庭出身の子供たちは、どこに将来の希望を見いだしたらいいんだろう？

I read an interesting article on today’s the Times – there are more musicians and singers from posh families emerging in Pop and Rock music industry. Rock has been historically resistant to the upper classes, and during 1960s and the 1990s when working-class pop stars dominated hit charts, rock and pop stars were the dream and hope of the poor boys and girls, while it was disdain and derision for the privileged kids who already has many options in their futures. Therefore, pop stars from good families once tried to hide their background. But now the time has changed.

The article mentions several reasons for a rise of posh pop stars. One of the reasons is that posh kids are brought up with good manners to make through the stardom: they are polite, friendly, likeable, and this help them become popular also in the world-biggest music market America, where good manners are judges as well as talent and attitude. That’s the reason why Oasis and Arctic Monkeys, top working-class stars with a bad-boy attitude, couldn’t succeed big in the USA, according to the article. Public schools‘ value in strong work ethic is another key to success in America, where hard working is very important. Confidence that public schools students internalize through the elitist education is crucial factor for success on stage.

Another reason is that public schools have great facilities, and there is a tradition that new boys have choral tests. Old public school teachers once considered rock music as silly and childish folly, but younger teachers who grew up with rock and pop music now see it as one of the valid career option and encourage students to go for music.

Now Tory, traditionally supported by middle/upper class, won the last election and Etonian and Oxford grad elite David Cameron became a prime minister. Public School graduates, about only 7% of the population, occupy over 50% of prestigious jobs such as lawyers, medics, journalists and CEOs (reference site) , and the result still shows UK is still strong class society. If the posh kids even monopoly music industry, where poor kids can find their goals and dreams?

Zumba Fitness Class @ Virgin Active

最近イギリスで流行中のZumba（ズンバ）。ズンバは、サルサやメレンゲ、マンボ、クンビア、レゲトン、カリプソ、ソカ、サンバ、チャチャ等のラテンアメリカ系音楽に、ラテンダンスをベースにヒップホップ等の要素も取り入れ、音楽とダンス、エクササイズを融合させた、エアロビック・フィットネスプログラム。コロンビア出身で、マイアミをベースに活躍するダンサー／フィットネス・インストラクターであるBeto Perez（ベト・ペレス）が考案、アメリカでブームを巻き起こし、世界に広がった。

私が行っているジム、Virgin Active（ヴァージン・アトランティック航空を擁するイギリスのヴァージン・グループがオーナーのスポーツクラブ。過去のエントリー「ヴァージン・メディア」参照）にも、今年1月からクラスが始まったので、何回か行ってみた。人気があるだけあって、クラスは人で溢れていて、派手に動いたり、ステップを間違えたりすると前後左右の人にぶつかりそうになる。20代とおぼしき若い女性が多いけれど、男性や30〜40代女性もちらほら。クラスは45分または1時間（クラスによって違う）で、ラテンの明るく情熱的な音楽にのって、ほとんど休みなく踊りまくる。正統派のラテンダンスと違ってパートナーも要らないし、やさしいステップが多く、間違ってもいいからとにかく体を動かして、楽しくエクササイズするというのが売り物。クラスの最後の方は、もうヘトヘトで、足ももつれそうになるが、気分は爽快。DVDとかも売ってるみたいだけれど、クラスで皆と一緒に踊って汗を流すのが楽しい。これにはまる人も多く、ズンバのクラスやイベントを渡り歩く人たちもいるそう。インストラクターによってクラスの質も違うので、色々なクラスやスポーツクラブを渡り歩いて、自分のお気に入りのクラスを探すのがいいかも。ちなみに、他のスポーツクラブより月会費は少し高いけれど、ヴァージン・アクティブのメンバーになると、全国約70あるクラブをどこでも利用できる。

Zumba is a recent fitness sensation in UK. Created by Miami-based Columbian dancer and fitness trainer Beto Perez, Zumba is an aerobic fitness program, which combines steps from a variety of Latin dance and uses corresponding Latin music such as salsa, merengue, cumbia, reggaeton, calypso, soca, samba, mambo, and cha cha, as well as hip hop and other music. Zumba is the fastest growing fitness based dance craze in the USA, and now its popularity has been spreading the to the other parts of the world.

I have a membership of Virgin Active health club, a part of Richard Branson‘s Virgin Group (see also my past entry about Virgin Media), and I went to Zumba class few times, as the club now has a Zumba class since January this year. It was a quite popular class with lots of people excitedly waiting in the studio – there was no space for an overzealous movement and an wrong step, without hitting someone around you. Participants were mainly young women in 20s, but some older people and few men as well. The class lasts usually 45 minutes to 1 hour, depending on the class, and you just dance fanatically all the way through with a passionate Latin soundtrack, with very little break. The concept of Zumba is just to have fun with easy-to-learn steps – don’t worry about a mistake. Also you don’t need to look for a partner, like traditional Latin dance, nor to dance with a same sex partner. At the end of the class, I was so exhausted and unable to make a light step, but I felt so good afterwards. DVD is also available, but it is more fun to dance and sweat together with a bubbly instructor and others in the class. Some are addicted to Zumba, and turn up any classes and events across the city. The quality of a class depends on a instructor, so it is better to try out some classes to look for your favorite instructor. If you become a member of Virgin Active, you can use over 70 Virgin Active clubs across the country – so it is worth its little pricier monthly membership fee.
