Hydrogen Bus @ Southbank Mix

Bankside Mix（バンクサイド・ミックス）に最近オープンしたVapianoに行った時に見かけた、Hydrogen Bus（水素バス）。調べてみたら、EUのCUTE（Cleaner Urban Transport for Europe）プロジェクトの一環として、2003〜2007年に試用期間を経て、昨年12月から本格的に運用開始されたという（tfl information / ガーディアン紙記事）。同時に、イギリス最大の水素供給ステーションが東ロンドンのLeytonにオープンした。

ロンドンでは毎年、4300人が大気汚染によって命を落としているという。水素バスは、水蒸気を排出するだけで、大気汚染はゼロ。タンク一杯の水素で、18時間以上運転可能だそうだ。現在、水素バスが走っているRV1ルートは、ロンドン塔、テート・モダン、サウス・バンク・センター、ロンドン・アイ、コヴェント・ガーデンなど、主な観光地を結ぶので、環境に優しい都市・ロンドンをアピールするのにぴったり。環境保護に執念を燃やすボリス・ジョンソン市長は、オリンピックの開催される2012年には、15台の水素タクシーを含む最低150台の水素自動車の導入を目標としている。しかし、水素燃料のタクシーがたったの15台って、少なくない？助成金が出てもコストがかかり過ぎて、この不況の中、個人経営のタクシーには敬遠されるのか。

ちなみにバンクサイド・ミックスのVapianoは、壁一杯の窓から入る太陽光で明るく広々としていて、しかもオープンから間もないせいか客も少なく、ゆったりできる。テート・モダンやバラ・マーケット（周りのレストランはいつも混んでいる）に行くなら、穴場です。

We saw a hydrogen Bus stopping at a bus stop in front of the Bankside Mix, when we went to newly opened Vapiano at the Bankside Mix. After a trial of three hydrogen buses in London between 2003 and 2007 as part of the EU-sponsored CUTE (Cleaner Urban Transport for Europe), the UK’s first permanent hydrogen bus was launched in December 2011 (tfl information / the Guardian article). At the same time, the UK’s largest hydrogen refuelling station opened in Leyton, east London.

It is said that more than 4,300 people lost their lives in London due to poor air quality every year. All that comes out of these hydrogen buses is water vapour and the vehicle can operate for more than 18 hours without refueling. RV1 route, where currently hydrogen buses are operated, connects popular tourist attractions such as the Tower of London, the Tate Modern, the South Bank arts complex, the London Eye and Covent Garden – perfect to appeal ‘clean’ London to visitors. Green-obsessed London mayor Boris Johnson aims to encourage a minimum of 150 hydrogen-powered vehicles on the road by 2012 including 15 hydrogen-powered taxis. Great, but isn’t the number of hydrogen taxis too small? Probably cost conscious self-employed taxi owners don’t want to spend too much money to upgrade to low emission vehicles under this recession, even with some financial incentive from the city government.

By the way, I recommend Vapiano at the Bankside Mix when you go to the Tate Modern or nearby Borough Market where restaurants around are always packed – it is spacious and bright with plenty of sunshine coming through floor-to-ceiling windows, and not many people know it at this moment as opened recently.

Vapiano Pizza & Pasta Bar @ Oxford Circus

オックスフォード・サーカス近くにあるレストラン、Vapiano（ヴァピアーノ）。ドイツ系パスタ・ピザチェーンで、ヨーロッパ、アメリカ、中近東に店舗展開している。ヴァピアーノは、通常のレストランとファースト・フードの中間のような形態で、店内に入ると、カウンターでチップ入りのカードを受け取り、カウンターで注文する時に、カードに注文が登録され、店を出る時に清算する仕組みだ。席でウェイターのサービスを待たなくてもいいので、せっかちの私にはとても嬉しいシステムだ。合理的なドイツ人に好まれそう。店で提供されるピザ生地とパスタは、客が見られるように店内のガラス張りのブースで作られ、店で使われるハーブ類もダイニング・エリアで育てている。注文を受けてからカウンターのオープンキッチンで手際良く作られる料理を、待ってる間に見ているのも楽しい。私たちはいつもパスタを注文するけれど、パスタは下手なイタリアレストランより美味しい。インテリアはいかにもチェーンの、ちょっと外したモダン系だけれど（特に２階の赤いレザーソファ）、２階建ての広々とした店内は、居心地もいいし、満席でがっかりすることもない。

The Timesのレストラン批評家が、ヴァピアーノのことを悪く書いていたが、書かれている程ひどくないと思う。それにロンドンには１軒しかないものの、チェーン・レストランを批評するのって、ロイヤル・ホストなんかを批評するようで、何だか違う気がする。かのThe Timesの批評家がチェーン店のことをこれ見よがしに書くなんて、御託を並べるのはちゃんとしたレストランだけにすれば？と思うのだが。

Vapiano is the German Pasta/Pizza restaurant chain that has expanded their business in the United States, Europe and the Middle East. Vapiano‘s concept is in-between fast food and casual restaurant. Each diner is provided a chip card that records an order at the food and drink counter, and you pay at the register when you leave the restaurant. It is great that I don’t have to wait for often slow service at the table, for a inpatient person like me. Maybe a German style practical system. All dough and pasta are manufactured on-site in a glass room so that customers can watch it, and all of the herbs and salad greens are grown in an enclosed space in the dining area. It is also fun to watch your made-to-order food being cooked in front of you at the counter, when you are waiting. We always order pastas and the pasta is not bad at all, or even better than bad Italian restaurants in the city. The interior of this spacious restaurant with two floors is typical chain restaurant modern with little sophistication (especially red sofas upstairs), but it is comfortable enough to stay for a while and you never get disappointed by finding no table available.

A food critique of the Times talked bad about Vapiano, but though there is only one restaurant in London, Vapiano is a chain restaurant and it is strange that “the Times’ food critique” criticizes about chain restaurant – it is like reviewing TGI Friday in a glossy newspaper magazine. Why doesn’t he mind only about ‘proper’ restaurants??
