Open House London Weekend

Open House Londonは、一般の人々の建築に対する理解を深めることを目的とした団体。1992年以来毎年、通常9月の第三週末に、個人宅や建築家のスタジオから政府施設、歴史的建造物まで、ロンドンにある700以上の様々な建築物を無料で見学できる2日間のイベント・Open House Londonを開催しており、今年は、先週末の9月17＆18日に行われた。これは、ヨーロッパ各地で開催されるイベント・European Heritage Days（Journées Européennes du Patrimoine：ヨーロッパ文化遺産の日）の一環で、期間中は、建物内の見学だけでなく、特別イベント、建築家のトークやガイド付きツアーなどを行うところもある。

興味深いイベントだ。けれどロンドンに来て最初の年に、近所にあるいくつかの建物を見た以来、毎年気になりつつも、行かずじまいになっている。何回か、どこかに置いてあったイベントプログラム（写真上）を無料で貰ってきたけれど、裏には£6.50と値段が印刷してあるので、売り物なのかもしれない。ウェブサイトではデジタル版が£3.50とある。でもこの冊子、いらいらするぐらい情報が分かりづらいのだ。リストはborough（区）やエリア毎に掲載されているのだが、住所と最寄りの駅名だけで地図がなく、見学ルートを考えるにはいちいちグーグルマップをチェックしなければならない。それに、建物毎に何行かの説明書きがあるだけで、写真があまり載っていないので、どんな建物か想像がつかず、これまたウェブで写真と詳細を探すはめになる。ロンドンの建築の知識が豊富だったり、建築に情熱を傾けている人はいいかもしれないが、私にはこれが面倒くさい。時間をかけてリサーチしても、人気のある場所は朝一番に行かないと、何時間も行列に並ぶはめになる。また先着順予約のみの入場のところもあり、予約があっという間に埋まってしまうところも多いらしい。

友人の話によると、この週末の朝の電車は、プログラムを熱心に読み込んでいる人たちで埋まっているという。熱心な人もいるものだ。私も建築には興味があるけれど、残念ながらそこまでする気力がないのだ。

This year’s Open House London event took place on last weekend, September 17 & 18. Open House London is an organisation which promotes appreciation of architecture by the general public. Since 1992, every year, usually held on the third weekend in September, the organisation hosts a two-day event known for Open House Weekend in which over 700 buildings with architectural significance in London, from small private houses and modern architects’ studios to government’s buildings and historic palaces, opens their doors to public, including special events, neighbourhood walks, architects’ talks and guided tours and more for free of charge. This event is a London version of the Europe-wide event of European Heritage Days (Journées Européennes du Patrimoine).

The concept is great, but we are kind of lost and always give up visiting anywhere, after we saw few places in our neighborhood on the first year of living in London… Some years I grabbed the program (photo above) from a brochure rack  somewhere for free, but it seems to be for sale with £6.50 price tag printed on the back, or digital edition for £3.50 online. However, the information is frustratingly hard to understand. Listings are ordered by borough or area, but there is no map but just address and nearest stations – so I have to check on google map for hours to plan a route. Also there are a small paragraph of information about each place but very few photos, so I have to go online for the images and further details. That’s a lot of work, unless you have a wealth of knowledge in architecture or are very passionate for architecture. Even If you did a thorough research, you have to go early in the morning or to be on a long queue for hours, if you want to visit the famous buildings. Some cases admission is by advance booking only and the popular sites are booked very fast like a lightening.

According to my friend, the morning train of the weekend is packed of people, enthusiastically reading the program. I like the architecture but I don’t have enough passion to go through these trouble…

たまたま通りがかった建物。中を見ようと思ったけれど、既に建築家のトークが始まっており、小さな会場は満員で断念。周りに何にもない、こんな何の変哲もない（ように見える）建物でも、大勢の人が来るのだ。

The building we just happened to pass by. We thought to visit inside but we gave up as the architect’s talk already started and the small room was full with people seriously listening. Surprisingly even this small building, looking nothing special, in the middle of nowhere attracted many people.

‘Home’ French ‘Road’ Movie that Got Lost in the Highway

先週に続いて、Renoir Cinemaでフランス映画「Home（ホーム 我が家）」を見た。ジュリエット・ビノシュと双璧をなす、現代フランス映画の実力派女優、イザベル・ユペール主演の2008年の作品。イギリスで上映されるフランス映画の半分は、この二人のうちどちらかが出ているような気がする。ちなみに男優なら、ヴァンサン・カッセルとダニエル・オートゥイユか。

「ホーム 我が家」は、「高速道路脇の家で暮らす一家の崩壊と再生の物語（東京国際映画祭解説より）」。高速道路建設予定地脇に10年間住んでいた５人家族。その間は何も起こらなかったのに、突如、中断していた建設工事が再開、その数日後に高速道路が開通したことから、家族の平和で楽しい生活は一転した。激しい交通量と騒音、空気汚染にも関わらず、母親は引っ越しを拒み、10年間慣れ親しんだその家に固執する。そのうち母親は神経を冒され、その影響は家族全体に及び、家族全体が病んでいく。

映画は、道路と彼らの家の他は何もないフランスの田舎を美しく描写している。物語も、仲が良く、平凡ながらも能天気で楽しく暮らしていた家族を、ユーモアを交えながら明るく描いていた前半は楽しめた。高速道路が開通してから、母親の様子がだんだんおかしくなっていく様子もリアリスティックで良かった。でも父親が家族が変になっていくのに気づいて、家族を力づくで連れ出そうとしたものの、母親の激しい抵抗にあって諦めてから、まともだった子供たちや夫まで皆が変になってしまって、家族全員で騒音防止のため家の窓からドアからコンクリートで密閉して自分たちを閉じ込めてしまったのはちょっとやり過ぎ。一気に冷めてしまった。映画のテーマは興味深いのに、残念だ。でも、映画評を見ると、良い評価を得ているのだが、私、何か見逃してる？？

50〜60年代のフレンチ・ヌーベルヴァーグ黄金期に比べて、最近、これは素晴らしい！という現代フランス映画に出会っていない。日本映画も同じ傾向があるけれども、一ひねりどころか二ひねりしてしまって滑ってしまい、非現実的で時に拍子抜けのエンディングになっている。現実は小説より奇なり、と言うけれど、人間の本質を鋭く描写する方が、奇をてらったストーリーより心を打つと思うんだけれど。

We saw a French movie ‘Home‘, starring French leading actress Isabelle Huppert, at Renoir Cinema.  Isabelle Huppert is one of the dominant actresses in recent French cinema together with Juliette Binoche, and I feel like at least half of the French movies shown in UK starring one of the two. The most-seen French actors in UK cinemas are probably Vincent Cassel and Daniel Auteuil.

‘Home‘ is about a family living on the side of an abandoned half-finished highway. After 10 years of living in the isolated house, the roadwork suddenly restarted and opened the new highway in few days later – this turned the peaceful family life upside down. Refusing to move, the family continue their happy-go-lucky lifestyle, despite the immense noise and pollution produced by thousands of speeding cars. However such distressful life reached to a breaking point. The mother, who was obsessed to the house, became neurotic day by day, and it started to affect other family members.

I enjoyed the movie at the beginning. The movie beautifully portrayed French countryside – nothing but only abandoned road and their house – and their boring but happy family life in the countryside with a touch of humor. It was still realistic when mother gets more and more erratic, with the daily stress from the busy highway. But it was too much, that all the family went crazy, after the father realized that the family was on the verge of collapse and tried to drag them out, but gave up at the end because of his wife’s fierce resistance. They locked up themselves by sealing all the windows and doors with concrete to shut all the noise from outside.  My interest in the movie diminished at this point – and I was disappointed. It was a shame because it was an interesting subject matter, and started good, but then ended up badly. Strangely, the movie review of ‘Home’ is pretty good – did I miss something??

In compare to the golden time of French Nouvelle Vague in the 50’s to 60’s, I haven’t seen an excellent French movie I really love, in years. Not only one twist, but directors often make too many twists, which end up being unbelievable or ridiculous. I think, sometimes real life stories are more interesting than the fiction trying to woo us.
