Franco Manca Pizza @ Westfield Stratford City

ロンドンで美味しいピッツァを探すと必ず出て来るのが、このFranco Manca（フランコ・マンカ→参考：Time Out / Young & Foodish / Zagat）。ロンドン南部Brixton（ブリクストン）にある本店の他、西部のChiswick（チズィック）にも支店があるが、どちらも家から遠いので、ずっと行きそびれていた。それが最近、Westfield Stratford Cityにもテナントとして入っていると知り、オリンピック・パークに来た折り（過去のエントリー）に試してみた。

ウェブサイトによると、Franco Mancaのピッツァは、本場ナポリからやってきたピザ職人の手によって、最低20時間かけてゆっくり発酵させたサワードウを使って、レンガ製薪窯で作られる。トッピングがのった部分だけでなく、小麦粉のナチュラルなアロマが詰まった、ふんわり柔らかく膨れた「Cornicione（コルニチョーネ。イタリア語でピザの端）」も、とても美味しいので、残さないで食べて欲しいとのこと。出てきたピッツァは見た目も麗しく、期待は最高潮に。ナポリの南・サレルノで7月・8月のみ収穫された、缶入りでも冷凍でもないフレッシュなトマトから作られたソースは甘くて美味しい。イタリアのチーズ職人の指導を受けて、イングランド南西部のサマセットにあるAlham Wood Organicsが生産したモッツァレラチーズも柔らかくとろけて、トマトソースとのハーモニーもいい。噂どおり、味は悪くない。悪くないが、期待値があまりにも高かったため、はっきり言って思ったより普通。最近ピッツァの美味しい店を幾つか発見、それらと比べて特段美味しいと思えなかった。混んだショッピングモールというセッティングも心理的に影響したかもしれない。Time Outによると、現在は経営者が変わっているとのこと。それでもロンドンで一番美味しくリーズナブルだと言っているが、もしかしたら味が少し落ちてしまったのかも。

以前はロンドンで美味しいピッツァを探すのに苦労したものだが、今はどこで食べるか迷うほど。ロンドンのピッツァも随分進化したなと嬉しく思う。

Every time I look for good places for pizza, this Franco Manca comes up on search (reference: Time Out / Young & Foodish / Zagat). Other than their original Brixton venue, there is also one in Chiswick, but both of them are too far from us and we had not have a chance to eat so far. However, we happened to know that they opened the new eatery at Westfield Stratford City, so we tried it when I went to see the game at the Olympic Park (see my past entry).

According to their website, their pizza is made from slow-rising sourdough (minimum 20 hours) and is baked in a wood burning brick oven made on site by specialised artisans from Naples. The flour’s natural aroma and moisture is locked in the pizza crust, so even the edge (‘cornicione’ in Italian) is excellent and shouldn’t be discarded, according to them. In fact, the pizza came out from the oven looked very nice, and our expectation reached to the maximum. The sauce made of tomatoes from Salerno (south of Naples), which are picked only July and August and are not canned or frozen, was very fresh and sweet, and had a great harmony with melted Mozzarella cheese produced by Alham Wood Organics in Somerset. Yes it was not bad, but the pizza was just slightly above average – maybe we expected too much or we were psychologically affected by its setting in a shopping mall eating with lots of people. We found several places for good pizza recently and even compared to those, Franco Manca’s was not so special. According to Time Out, the management has changed from the original founders, and taste might have changed, though Time Out believes that Franco Manca is the best and the most reasonably priced pizza in London.

It used to be quite hard for us to find the good pizza in London several years ago, but now we have handful in our list and sometimes we can’t decide where to eat. We are very happy that London’s pizza scene has been improved since!

Westfield Stratford City

オリンピックのシンクロデュエット決勝を見に行った帰り、オリンピックパーク横にある、昨年9月オープンのヨーロッパ最大のショッピングモール・Westfield Stratford Cityに立ち寄った（過去エントリー参照）。オリンピック開催中だけあって、人混みがすごい。でも、観客がオリンピックにお金を使い過ぎて財布のひもを締めているせいか不況のせいか、各店舗内は意外と空いている。買い物は我慢できても空腹は我慢できないのか、フードコートはさすがに席の奪い合い状態。ショップはありきたりのチェーン店が多いけれど、フードコートは、マクドナルドやスターバックスと言った大型チェーンだけでなく、世界各国の料理を取り揃え、Rosa’sやComptoir Libanaisなどの人気店も入居している。

結局この日は観戦疲れ・人疲れして全部見れなかったので、パラリンピック終了後、人気の少ない平日に一度ゆっくり見て回りたい。

I stopped by at the Europe’s biggest shopping center, Westfield Stratford City (see past entry), after attending the synchronized swimming duet final during the Olympics. There was a lot of people, but inside of the stores was rather empty, probably due to the recession or visitors trying to save money after spending a lot for visiting the Olympics. However, there was a war over empty seats here and there at its food court, as people cannot live without eating. The majority of shops at Westfield were boring chains, but it’s worth trying their food court where you can eat wide range of western and ethnic food at London’s popular eateries such as Rosa’s and Comptoir Libanais, not only at mega chains like McDonald’s and Starbucks.

I couldn’t fully enjoy the mall because I was exhausted from watching the game and the large crowd, but I will try again when is less busy during weekdays after the Paralympics.

Grand Opening of Westfield Stratford City: the Biggest Shopping Centre in Europe

2012年オリンピック・パークの横に建設されていた、ヨーロッパ最大となるショッピングセンター、Westfield Stratford City（ウェストフィールド・ストラットフォード・シティ）が、今日オープンした。その初日には、開店特別割引を求めて1万人以上の人々が来店、何人かは一番乗りを目指して20時間も行列を作って待っていたそうだ。ロンドン市長ボリス・ジョンソンやオーストラリア資本のWestfield group関係者によるお決まりのテープカットで開店。オープニングイベントとして、元プッシーキャット・ドールズのリードシンガーでF1ドライバーのルイス・ハミルトンの彼女、ニコール・シャージンガーのパフォーマンスが行われた。→ 写真や詳細はこちら： Telegraph | Daily Mail | the Sun

Shepherd’s Bush（シェファーズ・ブッシュ）のWestfield London（オープン３年経ってもまだ行ったことがないけど）に続いて出来たこのショッピングセンター、総工費は約14.5億ポンド。サッカー場約25つ分の190万平方フィート（約17万6516平方メートル）の広さを誇り、John Lewis（ジョン・ルイス）やMarks and Spencer（マークス＆スペンサー）の2大デパートを含む300以上のショップ、飲食店約70軒、ホテル3軒、14スクリーンある映画館、ボーリング場、そしてイギリス最大のカジノ（カジノがイギリスで合法だと知らなかった）がテナントとして入っている。まだオープンしていない店舗もちらほら見えるけれど、クリスマスまでには全て開店する予定。来年のオリンピックの大きな目玉の一つになると期待されている。このショッピングセンターの開店に伴い、店員1万人を含む約1万8000の仕事が創り出され、そのうち約20％の仕事は地元の失業者に割り当てられたそうだ。

この華々しい巨大ショッピングセンターのオープンは、IOCがどれだけ美辞麗句を並べ立てようが、オリンピックが大ビジネスであることを思い出させる。オリンピックを主催するには、何と言っても投資とお金が必要で、貧乏国には無理。その証拠に、2004年のホスト国ギリシャが巨額のローンを抱えて、破綻寸前のはご存知の通り。別に商業主義を批判している訳じゃないし、お金を出すならリターンを求めるのは仕方ないことだと思うけれど、オリンピズムなど白々しい理想論を掲げて、誤摩化さなくてもいいんじゃないかと思う。どうせ皆知ってるんだし。

The Europe’s biggest shopping centre, Westfield Stratford City located next to the 2012 Olympic park in east London, opened its door to the public today. Over 10,000 shoppers, some queued for up to 20 hours, flowed in the shopping centre to grab a bargain with Day One special discounts, and enjoyed a performance by Nicole Scherzinger, the former singer of the Pussycat Dolls and girlfriend of F-1 driver Lewis Hamilton, as well as less excited ceremony of cutting ribbon by London mayor Boris Johnson, together with gangs of the Australian Westfield group. It will be one of the big attraction for visitors to next summer’s Olympics. → See photos & details: Telegraph | Daily Mail | the Sun

A sister mall of Westfield London in Shepherd’s Bush (I still haven’t never been after 3 years of opening!), this £1.45 billion & 1.9 million ft² (=about 25 football pitches!) shopping centre houses more than 300 stores, including John Lewis and Marks and Spencer occupying large areas of the mall,  70 restaurants, a 14-screen cinema, three hotels, a bowling alley and the UK’s largest casino (I didn’t know that casino is legal in UK). However, some retail spaces are still unopened but are expected to open before Christmas. It is estimated that the centre has created around 18,000 permanent jobs including 10,000 in shops, about 20% of which went to the local long-term unemployed.

This event is another reminder for me that the Olympic is all (at least big part of it, if not all) about business, no matter what idealistic and pompous words IOC uses. You need investment and money to host the Games and poor countries cannot afford to. And whoever pay for it wants share. Greece couldn’t afford it but hosted it with huge loans, and has gone bust. I am not complaining or rather understand the system, but I just don’t like hypocrisy to disguise the commercialism – everyone knows it already!

Olympic Park in Strattford: ES Magazine

ロンドンの無料夕刊紙・イブニングスタンダード紙に毎金曜日ついてくるライフスタイル・マガジン・ES magazineに、2012年ロンドンオリンピックの競技会場となるオリンピック・パークの現在の建設状況を撮影した写真が掲載された。ギリギリまで完成が危ぶまれたアテネオリンピックと比べ、順調に建設が進んでいるようだ。

25億ポンドをかけてロンドン東部のStratford（ストラトフォード）の500エーカーのオリンピック用地に建設中のオリンピック・パークは、総観客席数10万を誇り、敷地内にはヨーロッパ最大のショッピングセンター「Westfield」もオープンする。オリンピック・スタジアムは、2014-15年シーズンより、プレミアリーグのウェストハム・ユナイテッドのホームスタジアムとして使用される予定。建設費3億ポンドのアクアティクス・センターは、世界的建築家のザハ・ハディッドがデザイン。アニッシュ・カプーアがデザインした高さ115mの展望タワー「Arcelormittal Orbit」は、イギリスで最も金持ちの、ミッタル・スチールCEO・ラクシュミー・ミッタルが、1910万ポンドの総工費のうち1600万ポンドを支払うとのこと。太っ腹！大ロンドン庁によると、ジェットコースターの赤いレールが絡まってしまったようなこの奇妙な形のタワー展望台から、オリンピックパーク全体とロンドンのスカイラインが見渡せるという。

I saw the photos of Olympic Park, currently on construction in Stratford in east London, on  ES, a lifestyle magazine which comes with London’s free evening paper Evening Standard on Fridays. The construction seems to be going well, in compare to Athens Olympic, with its construction of the olympic facilities were finished just few seconds before the inauguration.

£2.5 billion is spent for this new sporting complex with 100,000 seats that will host 2012 London Summer Olympics, and the largest shopping centre in Europe, Westfield is due to open in the 500-acre site. £500 million Olympic Stadium will be taken over by West Ham United from the 2014-15 football season. £300 million Aquatics Centre is designed by world-renown architect Zaha Hadid. Anish Kapoor-designed 115 metre-tall observation tower “Arcelormittal Orbit” is funded mostly (up to £16 million of the £19.1 million project) by Britain’s richest man Lakshmi Mittal, chairman of the ArcelorMittal steel. This steel tower, looking like twisted red jet coaster rails, will offer “unparalleled views of the entire Olympic Park and London’s skyline”, according to the Greater London Authority.

Comptoir Libanais: Lebanese Canteen & Delicatessen @ Wigmore Street

中近東料理レストランLevant、Pasha、Kenzaのオーナーで、アルジェリア生まれのTony Kitousが、ヘルシーでフレッシュなレバノンの家庭料理を気軽に楽しめる店を、とオープンさせたカジュアル・レバニーズ・チェーン・Comptoir Libanais（コントワール・リバネ）。「レバノンのカウンター」を意味する名前のこのお店は、ヨーロッパ最大規模の都市型ショッピングセンター・Westfield Shopping Centreにある一号店のほか、私たちが行った、ロンドンのショッピング・エリアであるオックスフォード・ストリートの北を平行して走っているWigmore Street店など、ロンドンに計4店を展開する。

オレンジ色のシェードが目印のカラフルなお店の中に入ると、長いショーウィンドーには、中近東のスイーツや、ファラフェルやコフタなどをPita （ピタ：中近東のパン）でくるくる巻いたWrap（ラップ）、フンムスやババ・ガヌージュ、タッブーレなどのメゼが並んでいる。その向かいは、可愛い買い物かごや、オリーブ油やクスクス、ピクルスなどの食料品が並ぶ大きな棚と細長い客席。奥には、キッチュなチューインガムのパッケージや巨大な女性の顔が描かれた壁に沿って、テーブルが並んでいる。メニューの表紙にも同じ女性の顔。メゼ類は単品でも頼めるし、何種類かのメゼがのったplatter（盛り合わせ）もある。今日注文したのは、Mezze Platter（1人分£6.75）、Coffee & Cardamom cheesecake（コーヒーとカルダモンのチーズケーキ£2.95）、レモネード（£1.80）とフレッシュミントティー（£1.80）。Mはピタが2枚しかついてなかったのが不満らしいけれど、メゼ・プラッターはフレッシュで味もまずまず。元フランス領だけあって、西洋風スイーツにハーブでひとひねりしたチーズケーキは、ちょっと大きすぎるけれど、甘すぎず、カルダモンの味がエキゾチック。

Comptoir Libanaisは、ちゃんとした食事と言うより、気軽に食べれるランチやおやつにぴったり。店内はキッチュで明るくて居心地もよく、私的には、椅子の座り心地が悪いYalla YallaよりComptoirの方が好きだな。

The owner of Middle Eastern restaurants, Levant, Pasha and Kenza, Algeria-born Tony Kitous opened casual Lebanese chain Comptoir Libanais (which means “Lebanese counter”) canteen and delicatessens, where you can enjoy healthy and fresh home-style Lebanese dishes. After the first restaurant at Westfield Shopping Centre, now the chain has total of four places in London, including the one we went on Wigmore Street, parallel to the biggest shopping area in London, Oxford street.

You can easily spot Comptoir with its orange shade, and when you go through the entrance, you see a long show windows filled with middle eastern sweets, wraps with falafel or kofta, and a variety of meze such as Hummus, Babaghanoush and Tabbouleh. In front of the show windows, there are big shelves with cute shopping bags, groceries such as olive oils, cous cous and pickles, as well as long and narrow colorful tables for seating. On the back is also a seating area, surrounded by the walls with kitsch illustration of chewing gum packages and a huge face of a Lebanese? girl. The same girl is on the cover of the menu as well. You can order mezze à la carte or a platter with several meze on one plate. Today we ordered Mezze Platter (£6.75 for one person),  Coffee & Cardamom cheesecake (£2.95), Lemonade (£1.80) and Fresh Mint Tea (£1.80). Although M was not happy that they gave him only 2 small pita bread, the meze platter was fresh and good. The cheesecake was a bit too big, but not too sweet and quite exotic – it is a good twist to add exotic herb to a Western desert.

Comptoir Libanais is more for lunch or afternoon snack than formal dinner, but it is pretty fun, cute and comfortable to stay. For Lebanese, I prefer Comptoir than Yalla Yalla, where is also cute but its chairs are really uncomfortable.
