Vrigin Media WiFi on London Underground

Virgin Media（ヴァージン・メディア）は、ロンドンオリンピックにあわせ、2012年6月から1月29日まで、ロンドン地下鉄での無料WiFiサービスを提供してきた。でもそのサービスも昨日で終了、今後もサービスを無料で使えるヴァージン・メディア（携帯電話・ブロードバンド）と携帯電話キャリアのボーダフォン、EE、T-モバイル、Orangeの顧客以外は、WiFi pass（1日£2 / 1週間£5 / １ヶ月£15）を購入しなければWiFiを使えなくなった。2月末までは期間限定で、2ヶ月分無料の3ヶ月パス（£15）を販売中。ちなみに、地下鉄利用者は引き続き、交通情報やロンドンのエンターテイメント、ニュースを提供するVirgin WiFiのポータルサイトは無料で利用できる。

ヴァージン・メディアは、昨年3月にロンドン地下鉄にWi-Fiを提供する契約を獲得。今週新たに11駅が既存のWiFiネットワークに加わり、3月末までにはロンドンの約120駅でWiFiが使用できるようになるという（WiFi接続駅リスト）。その他、WiFiプロバイダーのThe Cloudは、London Overground全56駅にWiFiコネクションを提供する契約を結び、またEyetease社提案の広告入りタクシー内無料高速WiFi サービスもロンドン交通局の認可を得た。WiFiモデルのタブレットユーザーや旅行者には嬉しいニュースだ。

うちはヴァージン・メディアとブロードバンド契約しているので、無料で地下鉄のWiFiを使えるけれど、改札口やエレベーター、プラットフォームでのみ接続可で動いている電車内では使えないので、あんまり重宝していない。電車で使えたら便利なのになあ。

Virgin Media had been offering free WiFi service since June 2012, coinciding with the London 2012 Olympic Games, till yesterday on January 29th. From today, no more free WiFi for everyone, except Virgin Media mobile and broadband customers as well as the the Vodafone, EE, T-Mobile and Orange customers who continue to enjoy free WiFi. Others have to purchase WiFi pass (£2@day / £5@week / £15@month) to use WiFi at Tube stations. During February, you can buy a 3-month special pass for £15 as a limited offer. However, Tube customers can still get free access to a Virgin WiFi portal, offering travel updates from Transport for London, information on London entertainment, and news.

Virgin Media won the contract to provide Wi-Fi to the London Underground in last March. This week new 11 stations were being connected to the Tube WiFi network, and the network is due to be expanded to around 120 stations by the end of March 2013 (list of the stations with WiFi).

Other good news for tourists and WiFi model tablet users: WiFi provider The Cloud has won another deal to provide Wi-Fi connections at all 56 London Overground stations; and the ad-supported free London taxi high-speed WiFi proposed by Eyetease was approved by Transport for London.

I am a Virgin Media broadband customer and can use the Tube WiFi service for free, but I don’t see it very useful – the service works only on ticket halls, escalators, platforms and on trains while at platforms, but not on trains on the move…

El Paso Tex Mex Café & Restaurant @ Hoxton

El Paso（エル・パソ）は、ホクストン・スクエアのすぐ南、Old Street沿いにある。10年以上前からある店だけれど、Mother Brownブログによると、2010年にリニューアルされたそう。くたびれた外観とは対照的に、カラフルなヴィンテージ家具や口ひげやソンブレロの形にくり抜いた壁など、中はファンキーでモダン、広々としていて気持ちがいい。

しかし。見た目はいいけれど、自称「ベスト・テクス・メクス料理」は詐欺だと思う。注文したステーキ・ブリート（£8.50）は味がない。シェフは東洋人。もちろん中国人や日本人にも、腕のいいメキシコ料理シェフはいるだろうけれども、味がヒドかっただけに、見た目による心理的逆効果も否めない。少なくともブリートは、ファスト・フード店のChipotleの方が全然いい。そしてあの不味いコーヒーは、ほとんど犯罪だ。

El Pasoのコンセプトは、現代の「ノマドワーカー」のためにWi-Fiを完備した作業スペースを設けたバー・レストランと言うことだが、食べ物がダメダメな分、こうして席を埋めるということだろう。でも正直なところ、私はロンドンに多数いるこのノマドワーカー（または学生）にはあまり好意的じゃない。お金払ってるんだから何してもいい、との言い分は正論かもしれないが、カフェは飲み食いするところで仕事場ではない。El Pasoのようにガラガラの店ならいいけれど、混雑している店で4人がけテーブルに陣取り、コーヒー一杯で何時間も粘る行為は、美味しい食事やひと時の憩いを求めて来たのに席がなく泣く泣く諦める人たちに失礼だ。前にも書いたけれど、それよりヒドいのが会議室代わりに使う人たち。長時間テーブルを占拠する上、うるさいので他の客の迷惑以外の何者でもない。

とつい感情的になってしまったけれど、El Pasoにも長所はある。明るくて居心地はいいし、Euro 2012の全試合を放映するので、ビール（コーヒーは×）を飲みながらのサッカー観戦には最適。もちろん、劣悪なオフィス環境や狭いアパートに苦しむノマドワーカーや学生たちにもね。

El Paso is located on Old Street, few steps to the south from the Hoxton Square. It’s been there for over ten years but it was updated in 2010, according to Mother Brown blog. In contrast to its weary and shabby facade, the interior is funky and cheerful with colourful vintage furniture and cheeky details like moustache and mariachi hut-shape holes on the walls.

Looking good, but their self acclaim of ‘the best Tex-Mex food’ was a big cheat. We ordered Steak Burrito (£8.50) but it didn’t have any taste. The chef was an East Asian – I don’t want to be offensive and surely there is an excellent Chinese or Japanese chef specialising in Mexican food, but psychological aspect would be another blow if the taste was bad. We rather go to a fast-food burrito like Chipotle. And their coffee was almost a criminal offence! Bad, bad, bad.

The concept for the El Paso is a bar/workspace/diner equipped with free Wi-Fi, accommodating modern ‘nomadic’ workers (or people who don’t have an office or students with a tiny flat??). It is a good tactic for them to fill the space since the food is bad. But to be honest, I am not very sympathetic to the  ‘nomadic’ work style in a café. It is tolerable if the place is half-empty like El Paso, but some people are thick-skinned enough to stay in a café, completely packed and people are waiting to be seated, taking up a table for four, with just one cup of coffee for hours and hours. But the worst offenders are the people using the place as a conference room – noise pollution for other customers!!

Anyway, I have been harsh and emotional, but there is something good at El Paso. The place is relaxing and they show all the games during Euro 2012, and it maybe the perfect place to cheer your team with a glass of beer (nott a cup of coffee). And of course, for people who want to work outside their miserable office or flat.

The Book Club Cafe, Bar & Restaurant @ Shoreditch

東ロンドンのショーディッチのLeonard Streetに最近できた、カフェ／バー／レストラン、The  Book Club。バー／クラブ・Queen of Hoxtonと同じオーナーが経営、以前はHOMEというバーだったビクトリア時代の倉庫があった建物にある。元倉庫のレンガ壁と広々としたスペースを生かした、2階に分かれたフロアは、ビンテージ風の家具や長テーブルが置かれ、地階にはビリヤード台、1階には卓球台が置いてある小部屋もある。また、トークやワークショップ等の文化イベントも開催されており、週末等にはDJも入る（イベントスケジュールはこちら）。客層は場所柄、デザイン事務所やファッション、メディア等で働くクリエーターや、ヒップな若者が多い。Wi-Fiは無料、プライベート・ミーティングルームや映写施設もある。ちなみにイギリスでは、カフェやパブで、一般客に混じってビジネス・ミーティングをしているのをよく見かける。テーブルが小さかったり、うるさい場所でもやってるので、気が散らないのだろうかといつも思う。

オープン時間は朝8時から深夜まで（木・金・土は午前2時まで）、時間帯によって食事メニューも変わる。夜はお皿のサイズで値段が決まるユニークなシステムで、グループ用に大鍋でパスタやシチューも注文できるそうだ。私たちは遅めのランチで、スパゲティ・ミートボールと、Bangers&Mash（ソーセージとマッシュポテト）を注文。ソーセージ＆マッシュはまずまず。スパイシーなトマトソースとミートボールは美味しかったけれど、スパゲティは品質が良くなく、ゆで過ぎだったのが残念。

The Book Club is a recently opened café/Bar/Restaurant, located on Leonard Street in a former Victorian warehouse (where used to be the HOME bar) in Shoreditch, East London. Run by the same people as the Queen of Hoxton, this former warehouse with brick walls and vast 2-floor spaces is decorated with vintage-style furniture and long tables, and has a pool table and a DJ area downstairs and a ping-pong table in a small room on the corner of the ground floor. The Book Club also offers a variety of creative and cultural events as well as parties and DJ nights (event schedules are here), and attracts creative workers and hip twenty-somethings who live or work around the area. Wi-Fi is free, and you can also use private meeting rooms and screening facilities. I often see people having a business meeting in a café or a pub in UK and always wonder if they are not distracted: sometimes it is noisy and a table is too small to spread documents.

The Book Club opens all day from 8 am to midnight (until 2 am on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays), and the menu changes accordingly. In the evening, diners pay by plate size and large groups can purchase huge pots of pasta or stew. We ordered Spaghetti with Italian Meatballs and Bangers&Mash for our late lunch. Bangers&Mash is not bad, and spicy tomato sauce for the pasta was good, but disappointment was the spaghetti – it was a cheap kind and mushy + far away from al dente…
