Argos Renewed Digital Store @ Old Street

11月26日、イギリスの生活用品小売大手のArgos（アーゴス）の、デジタル化したシステムを導入した新しいコンセプトの6店舗のうちの1店が、オールドストリート駅近くにリニューアルオープンした。アーゴスの象徴である時代遅れのラミネートされたカタログ、申込書と鉛筆、そしてオモチャのような在庫確認の器械は、iPadに取って代わった（旧システムは以前のブログ参照）。

アーゴス新店舗での買い物は、より簡単＆迅速に。まず、商品説明ビデオや消費者のレビュー等が見られるアプリケーションを搭載したiPad、または店内の無料WiFiを使って自分のスマホやタブレットで商品を選ぶ。以前はレジで代金を払った後、味気ない待ち合いスペースでかなり待たされて商品を受け取らなければならなかったけれど、今は商品が用意されると、注文時に自分でインプットした合言葉が呼ばれるので、カウンターで代金支払い・商品受け取りが同時に出来る。また、前もってオンライン、または店内でスマホやタブレットで注文・支払いを済ましておけば、60秒以内に注文品が受け取れるFast Track collection serviceも導入された。

以前の安っぽくてアナログな店内に比べ、新店舗はハイテクで清潔。フロアには申込書や鉛筆等も落ちてないし、入口に山積みされた分厚いカタログもない。最初訪れた時は新しいシステムが分からず戸惑ったけれど、フレンドリーなスタッフがすぐさま助けてくれた。12月24日まで、£40買い物すると£5のヴァウチャーがもらえるキャンペーン中。

店は格段に良くなったけれど、チープなロゴと冴えない赤＆ライトブルーの組み合わせは、モダンなデジタル店舗に合わない気がするけど。

UK’s catalog retail giant, Argos, transformed their analogue style and dull shop space and opened its first of six digital concept stores on Nov 26 near Old Street station. No more laminated catalogues, small pencils and paper slips, and toy-like stock checker machines (see my post for old system) – all are replaced by iPads.

How to shop at new Argos is easier and quicker. Customers use iPads with  applications such as product videos and customer reviews, or personal mobile devices via free in-store WiFi. The collection counter and annoying waiting system has gone as well. Previously, after paid at the cashier, you had to sit down and wait quite some time in a waiting space like a doctor’s office, facing the same way  to the collection counter. Now instead, after ordering via an iPad kiosk and choosing a memorable word to distinguish your order, then till staff use that word to call up the order, allowing shoppers to pay for goods and receive them at the same time. Customers purchasing goods online or via mobile devices can enjoy a new Fast Track collection service, so you can get your purchase within a matter of 60 seconds since you walk in the store, Argos claims.

Now the store looks more high-tech and clean. No pencils or paper slips on the floor. I went to shop at the new store for the first time and was a bit confused, but friendly staffs always offered a helping hand. Much better than before, though I still don’t like their (cheap) logo and color combination of red and light blue…

Until December 24, you can get £5 voucher when you spend £40. Good incentive to try their new digital stores.

Vrigin Media WiFi on London Underground

Virgin Media（ヴァージン・メディア）は、ロンドンオリンピックにあわせ、2012年6月から1月29日まで、ロンドン地下鉄での無料WiFiサービスを提供してきた。でもそのサービスも昨日で終了、今後もサービスを無料で使えるヴァージン・メディア（携帯電話・ブロードバンド）と携帯電話キャリアのボーダフォン、EE、T-モバイル、Orangeの顧客以外は、WiFi pass（1日£2 / 1週間£5 / １ヶ月£15）を購入しなければWiFiを使えなくなった。2月末までは期間限定で、2ヶ月分無料の3ヶ月パス（£15）を販売中。ちなみに、地下鉄利用者は引き続き、交通情報やロンドンのエンターテイメント、ニュースを提供するVirgin WiFiのポータルサイトは無料で利用できる。

ヴァージン・メディアは、昨年3月にロンドン地下鉄にWi-Fiを提供する契約を獲得。今週新たに11駅が既存のWiFiネットワークに加わり、3月末までにはロンドンの約120駅でWiFiが使用できるようになるという（WiFi接続駅リスト）。その他、WiFiプロバイダーのThe Cloudは、London Overground全56駅にWiFiコネクションを提供する契約を結び、またEyetease社提案の広告入りタクシー内無料高速WiFi サービスもロンドン交通局の認可を得た。WiFiモデルのタブレットユーザーや旅行者には嬉しいニュースだ。

うちはヴァージン・メディアとブロードバンド契約しているので、無料で地下鉄のWiFiを使えるけれど、改札口やエレベーター、プラットフォームでのみ接続可で動いている電車内では使えないので、あんまり重宝していない。電車で使えたら便利なのになあ。

Virgin Media had been offering free WiFi service since June 2012, coinciding with the London 2012 Olympic Games, till yesterday on January 29th. From today, no more free WiFi for everyone, except Virgin Media mobile and broadband customers as well as the the Vodafone, EE, T-Mobile and Orange customers who continue to enjoy free WiFi. Others have to purchase WiFi pass (£2@day / £5@week / £15@month) to use WiFi at Tube stations. During February, you can buy a 3-month special pass for £15 as a limited offer. However, Tube customers can still get free access to a Virgin WiFi portal, offering travel updates from Transport for London, information on London entertainment, and news.

Virgin Media won the contract to provide Wi-Fi to the London Underground in last March. This week new 11 stations were being connected to the Tube WiFi network, and the network is due to be expanded to around 120 stations by the end of March 2013 (list of the stations with WiFi).

Other good news for tourists and WiFi model tablet users: WiFi provider The Cloud has won another deal to provide Wi-Fi connections at all 56 London Overground stations; and the ad-supported free London taxi high-speed WiFi proposed by Eyetease was approved by Transport for London.

I am a Virgin Media broadband customer and can use the Tube WiFi service for free, but I don’t see it very useful – the service works only on ticket halls, escalators, platforms and on trains while at platforms, but not on trains on the move…

 

YOtel @ Gatwick Airport

少し前になるが、空港行きの電車の故障で、飛行機に乗り遅れたことがあった。次の便の出発は7時間後。Mはそんなに待つのは嫌だから翌日の便に変更しろとうるさかったけれど、空港内にYOtelがあるのを思い出しMを説得、ここで時間をつぶすことにした。

日本のカプセルホテルをモデルにしたYOtelは、1997年に創業しイギリスの寿司ブームに貢献、現在ロンドンを中心にイギリス、ヨーロッパ、中近東に展開する回転寿司チェーン・Yo! Sushi（ヨー！スシ）の創始者、Simon Woodroffe（サイモン・ウッドロフ）が立ち上げたミニホテルチェーンで、現在、ロンドンのヒースロー空港とガトウィック空港、アムステルダムのスキポール空港、そしてニューヨークのタイムズスクエアの計4軒営業している。

私たちが利用したガトウィック空港内のYOtelは、最低4時間利用でツインルーム料金は£70.34（4時間）。ネットで前払いだと£42.50と割安になる。空港で7時間もぼーっと過ごすことを考えると、この値段でも惜しくない。紫色の照明が怪しげな廊下を通って部屋へ。窓なし、2段ベッドと引き出し式の小さな机、椅子、トイレ＆シャワーがあるだけの、寝台車を思わせる味も素っ気もない狭い部屋だけど、薄型テレビにWiFi完備、コーヒーや紅茶など暖かい飲み物は無料、食事もオーダー可能と、サービス内容はまずまず。歯ブラシ等のアメニティも売っている。部屋はとても清潔で、パリッとした上質のシーツで覆われたベッドはなかなか寝心地も良く、睡眠環境もいい。最初不機嫌だったMもよく眠ったお蔭で機嫌が良くなり、無事同日に出発、ホテルのキャンセルも免れ旅程も予定通りと、ハッピーエンド。良かった：）

A while ago, we missed our flight due to severe delay of a train to an airport. Next flight was 7 hours later. M was furious and insisted to go back home and to take the next day flight. But I wanted to fly on the day as we planned, and then I remembered about YOtel at the airport, and persuaded him to kill the time there.

Inspired by Japanese capsule hotels, YOtel is a mini-hotel chain and was launched by Simon Woodroffe, a founder of the sushi chain  YO! Sushi using the Japanese style ‘kaiten’ conveyor belt in 1997, which has contributed Sushi boom in UK and now have its branches mainly in London but also in other UK cities, Europe, and Middle East. Currently YOtel are in four locations; London Heathrow Airport, Gatwick Airport, Amsterdam Schipol Airport, and Times Square in New York.

YOtel Gatwick where we stayed, it was £70.34 for twin room for 4 hours (minimum stay), but it is much cheaper (£42.50), if you pay in advance online. It was worth it when we imagined of doing nothing but killing 7 hours at the airport. We walked through dim corridor lighten up in purple to our room. It was basic simple room with no window but pull up work desk, small chair, 2 bunks (one upper and one lower), and toilet & shower – it was like a cruise ship cabin. However, service was not bad. The room was equipped with flat screen TV and free WiFi. Hot drinks were free, and you can order food, beverages, snacks and amenities from their “TO GO” menu. The room was clean, and their beds with good quality sheets were quite comfortable to sleep. M was grumpy at first but became in a good mood after sleeping well. We could leave on the same day, without cancellation of a hotel room, and were on an itinerary as we planned – happy ending!

fix Café @ Whitecross Street

バービカン・センターと、ロンドン交響楽団のコンサートホールとして使われているSt Luke’s Churchを結ぶ、Whitecross StreetとRoscoe Streetの角に昨年10月オープンしたカフェ・fix。元は、ブリックレーンやGoswell Roadに店舗を持っていたCoffee@という小規模カフェチェーンがあったところで（Coffee@は昨年始めに倒産したよう）、ミッドセンチュリー風でちょっと使い古された感じの、センスのいい家具と、天井の高い広々とした店内は、ランチタイムを過ぎているというのに、かなりの人で埋まっていた。近くで働くクリエーターたちなのか、ノート型パソコンやiphone等のアップルユーザーが多く、また男性率も高い（シングル女性は要チェック？）。ちなみにfixではWIFIが使える。

注文したパニーノ・サンドイッチは、きれいにトーストして、茶色の持ち帰り用紙製パッケージで出してくれ、味もパッケージも合格点。でも、有機栽培フェアトレード（公正取引）のエスプレッソは、ちょっと薄くて味も今イチ。それに、陶器製エスプレッソカップではなく、大きな紙製カップに入ってくるのも、Mにとっては痛いマイナスポイントだ。でも、The London Tea Companyのオーガニック＋フェアトレードのアールグレイは美味しかった。

Café fix was opened last October on Whitecross Street, which connects Barbican Centre and St Luke’s Church (used as a concert hall by London Symphony Orchestra/LSO) , at the corner of Roscoe Street. The place is used to be Coffee@, a mini café chain in London (also on Brick Lane and Goswell Road as well), but the chain went into administration at the beginning of 2009. The spacious café with high ceiling, furnished in mid-century style used furniture, was quite full even after busy lunch time. There are many creator-like Mac users typing apple laptops and playing with iphones (WIFI is available at fix), and more men than women (single women must check it out!). Panino sandwich M ordered, toasted and served in a nice brown take-out paper box, was quite good. But their “organic fairtrade” espresso in a paper cup (which M hates) was watery and tasteless. But my organic+fairtradde Earl Grey tea by The London Tea Company was quite lovely.

ホワイトクロス・ストリートは、毎日ランチ時に、タイ料理やメキシカン等、食べ物の屋台が出るので、ランチを買いにくる近くのオフィスで働く人や近所の住民で賑わう。また木曜、金曜はフードマーケットが開かれている。その中の屋台の１つに、アメリカ・アトランタで行われた、2009年ワールド・バリスタ・チャンピオンシップ（The 2009 World Barista Championship）で優勝した、Gwilym Daviesの屋台もある（彼は花のマーケットで有名なColumbia Road marketにも出店）。いつか世界一の彼のコーヒーを飲んでみたいと思っているのだが、ランチ時は混むので避けているため、まだその機会がない。しかし、コーヒー屋台のオーナーがバリスタの世界チャンピオンなんて、すごいと思いませんか？

Whitecross street hosts a small food market every week day at lunch time and serves a variety of lunch such as Thai or Mexican etc. to the workers at nearby offices and neighbors. A larger food market is held on Thursdays and Fridays, and the street has occasional food festivals. One of the market stool is of  Gwilym Davies, who won the 2009 World Barista Championship (he also has a stool at Columbia Road market). I want to try his “world’s No.1” coffee, but we avoid busy lunch time and we haven’t tried it yet. But isn’t it cool that the coffee vendor on the small street in London is the world barista champion?!
