Gauguin: Maker of Myth @ Tate Modern

フランス・ポスト印象派の巨匠、ポール・ゴーギャンの作品を世界中から集めた大規模な「Gauguin」展が、9月30日から来年1月16日まで、テート・モダンで開催されている。

株式仲買人の職を辞し、家族を妻の故郷のコペンハーゲンに残し、パリで、独学で始めた絵画に専念。その後西洋文明に失望しタヒチに移り住んだ。その時に、現地の女性を独特のタッチで色彩豊かに画いた、エキゾチックな画風の絵が有名だが、この展覧会ではその他、ゴーギャンがちょくちょく訪れた、アーティストのコロニーがあるブルターニュ地方・ポン＝タヴェンの風景画や宗教画、自画像、木彫りなど、多くの作品が展示されている。

ゴーギャンは、タヒチでまだ年若いと思われる思春期の女の子の絵を多く描いたため、幼児性愛者と言われたり、植民地主義者、性差別主義者と呼ばれることもしばしば。またパリにいる時にうつされた梅毒の感染事実を知りながらタヒチの若い女性たちと性交渉を持ったことに対する批判もある。梅毒のことはヒドい話だが、その他の批判は、当時は幼児性愛は悪だとか、植民地時代には現地人の人権とか言う観念はなかっただろうから、彼が極悪人であったと決めつけるのは気の毒な部分もある。

鳴り物入りで始まった展覧会だけれど、単なるラフスケッチや小粒の作品も多く、少し期待外れ。木彫りなどは、彼独特の色使いが見られないし、むしろ平凡、現地の工芸品の方がまだ出来がいいんじゃないかと思う。またデイリー・テレグラフ紙のアート批評家が指摘しているように（記事）、このゴーギャン展では、年代別ではなくテーマ別に作品が展示されているため、彼の作品を良く知らない人たちは、彼のスタイルの変遷を追いづらいという難点がある。私も、ゴーギャンの人生での出来事との繋がりやその作品の背景が見えなくて、少し分かりづらかった。

A French Post-Impressionist Paul Gauguin’s large scale exhibition “Gauguin“, exhibiting his works from around the world, runs at the Tate Modern from September 30 until January 16, 2011.

Gauguin left his job as a stockbroker and his family in his wife’s native Copenhagen, and became a full-time painter in Paris, after he began painting in his free time.  He is famous for his colorful and exotic images of women in Tahiti, to where he escaped from European civilization, but the exhibition also shows a variety of works such as paintings of Brittany where he frequently visited the artist colony of Pont-Aven, religious paintings, self-portraits, and wood carvings.

Gauguin is sometimes called as a colonialist, a sexist, or even a pedophilia because he painted naked or half-naked young Tahitian girls as his favorite motif. He was also condemned that he had sexual relationship with Tahitian girls knowing that he got infected syphilis while he was in paris. It is terrible that he took a risk to infect these innocent girls, but other criticisms are a bit too harsh on him, as there was no concept that “pedophilia is bad” nor human right of a colonial among colonizers at that time he lived through.

The exhibition opens with a fanfare as a blockbuster of this year, but I was a bit disappointed because the exhibition includes many unimpressive works such as mere quick drawings and wood carvings which are rather boring without his signature colors and Polynesian would probably do better that kind of wood carvings than him. As the Daily Telegraph’s art critique mentions the risk of hanging Gauguin’s works thematically instead of chronologically, that makes it difficult for anyone who are not particularly familiar with his works to follow his stylistic development (article), the exhibition was a bit confusing for me to connect his life stage and artistic history to his actual works in front of me.

Henry Moore Exhibition @ Tate Britain

イギリスを代表する彫刻家・アーティストである、ヘンリー・ムーアの展覧会が、今日からテート・ブリテンで始まった。1986年の彼の死後、ロンドンで最大規模となるこの回顧展では、大理石や木彫り、ブロンズ等の彫刻やドローイングなど、150以上に及ぶムーアの初期の作品を展示。彼の主なテーマである、「母と子」や「横たわる像」、座像や頭像の彫刻とともに、第二次世界大戦中に戦争画家として描いた、Blitz（ザ・ブリッツ：ドイツ軍による空襲）」の際に、ロンドン地下鉄や防空壕で寝泊まりする人々の絵も展示されている。

ムーアは、伝統的な彫刻観を否定し、美術館や博物館で見た非西欧の作品からインスピレーションを受けた。模型を作らず直接作品を彫るダイレクト・カーヴィングの先駆者であり、人間の体をモチーフとして、穴が開いていたり空洞を含んだりする、独特の有機的フォルムを作り上げた。その、モダニズムやシュルレアリズムが融合した、ブロンズや大理石製の大規模な抽象彫刻は、パブリック・アートとして、ロンドンをはじめ、世界中で見ることが出来る。ムーアは、自身の作品が公の場に置かれるのを好んだが、昨日のBBCニュースによると、盗難や破壊行為により、最近では屋内での展示が増えているそうだ。

この「ヘンリー・ムーア」展は、なかなか見応えのある、充実した展覧会だ（写真はBBCサイトでも見れる）。屋外作品に比べると作品は小規模だけれども、土着的でシンプル、どっしりとした彫刻スタイルは変わらない。彼の作品はなんとなく温もりがあり、見ていると安らぐ。それに比べ、地下で避難した顔の見えないミイラのように描かれた人々の暗い絵からは、戦時中の人々の苦難がひしひし伝わってくる。

A new exhibition of the work of Henry Moore (1898–1986), one of Britain’s greatest sculptors and artists, just opens at Tate Britain today. The exhibition, the first major London retrospective of his work since his death in 1986, presents more than 150 stone sculptures, wood carvings, bronzes and drawings in his early career, including his main themes of the mother and child, reclining woman, seated figure and head, as well as his shelter drawings of Londoners sleeping in bomb shelters during the Blitz, as an Official War Artist. Although Moore liked his works to be in outdoor public spaces, recently more of his works are exhibited indoor due to vandalism and theft, according to the BBC news yesterday.

Moore rebelled against views of sculpture, instead finding inspiration from non-Western works he saw in museums. He pioneered carving directly from materials, evolving his signature abstract forms derived from the human body, with the influence of Modernism and Surrealism. His organic forms are generally pierced or contain hollow spaces. He was best known for his large scale abstract monumental bronze and marble sculptures which are located around London as well as the world as public art.

The exhibition is impressive and well-done. Though Moore’s works are smaller than his outdoor works, his unique style, primitive yet modern and simple, is certainly seen. His works have some sort of warmth and strength, and I felt calm and relaxed by looking at them. On the other hand, his drawings of people without faces and looking like mummies during German air raids, are painful to look at and vividly shows us the hardship that people went through during the World War II.

Thai Thai East @ Old Street

昨年のSkylonから1年ちょっと、レストラン予約サイト・Toptable（トップテーブル）のポイントがある程度たまった。有効期限（ポイント獲得から1年）が迫ったポイントがあったので、取りあえず近場で無料ディナーを提供するところを探して選んだのが、このThai Thai East。オールドストリート駅の西、St Luke’s Churchの斜め向かいにある。家から結構近いし、二人ともタイ料理は好物なのだけれども、インテリアが今イチなので、今回が初体験。かなり大きめのレストランだが、火曜日の9時半という遅い時間にも関わらず、結構繁盛していた。オールドストリートエリアという場所柄、若い人が多い。店内は、木彫りの壁飾りや仏像の置物等、いかにもタイレストランというたたずまいだが、もともとあったものなのか、天井には大きなステンドグラスがはめ込まれている。広い店内なのに、テーブルレイアウトが上手くされておらず、空いた空間があるかと思うと、私たちのテーブルは、両横とも10cm弱のスペースしかなく、もし他の客が横に座ったなら、ちょっと窮屈に感じたと思う。ちょっと遅い時間だったので、誰も座らなくてラッキーだったけれど。

2コース（前菜＋メイン）無料ディナーは、夜なのに何故かランチセットメニュー（多分£8.95と安いから）の中から選ぶのだが、ベジタリアンメニューもあり、前菜もメインも結構チョイスがある。私たちは、トムヤムチキンスープ、チキンサテー、そしてパッタイ（タイレストランでは必ず頼む）をオーダー。スープは不味くはないけれどもちょっと味にパンチがない。でもサテーのチキンは柔らかくてジューシー、パッタイもなかなか良い味だった。サービスも、中国人と違って押しが強すぎず、タイ人らしく丁寧で謙虚。私たちは無料ディナー（飲み物別）で店の経営には貢献しなかったけれど、気持ちよく接してくれた。絶対お薦め！とは言えないけれど（やっぱりインテリアが好きじゃない。。。）、たまに近場でタイ料理が食べたい時に使えるかも。

After one year passed since we went to have a free reward dinner at Skylon, I have earned enough points of a restaurant reservation site Toptable, for another reward meal. As some of the points are about to expire (expiration: 1 year), I chose Thai Thai East, the nearest restaurant offering the toptable reward meal. Thai Thai East is located across St Luke’s Church, west of Old street station. It was our first time, though it is not so far from us and we both like Thai food, just because their interior is not our cup of tea. It was on Tuesday at 9:30pm, but this rather large restaurant was quite packed, with mostly young people. The interior is of a typical Thai restaurant, with wood-carving wall decorations and Buddha heads, but the ceiling was covered by the big stained glass, probably it’s been there from before. Although the restaurant has a large floor, the table layout is not well done – there some empty spaces here and there, but the space two sides of my table were almost nonexistent. Luckily, nobody came to sit next to us.

You choose an appetizer and a main from Lunch set menu (£8.95) for 2 course reward dinner, though it was at night (probably because the lunch menu is cheaper).  There is a good number of choice for both starters and mains, and also a vegetarian menu is available. We ordered Tom Yum chicken soup, Chicken Satay, and 2 Pad Thai (we always order Pad Thai every time we go to eat Thai). Although Tom Yum soup was a bit bland and tasteless, Satay was tender and juicy, and Pad Thai was quite good as well (not too sweet, not too salty). Service was modest but cordial, typical Thai, not like Chinese who are more pushy. The workers treated us pleasantly though we didn’t contribute much to the restaurant (we paid only drinks + service). I don’t strongly recommend this place (sorry I just don’t like the interior!), but it could be our place when we crave for Thai nearby.
