Tommi’s Burger Joint @ Marylebone Lane

今年6月下旬にMarylebone LaneにオープンしたTommi’s Burger Jointは、母国アイスランドに20店近いレストランとホテルを持つTomas Tómassonが創業した、アイスランドに5店舗有するハンバーガー・チェーンのイギリス第一号店（Tommiは彼のニックネーム）。

カジュアルでレトロな店内は、壁にアメリカのドラマや歌手、昔の映画等のポスターを飾ったりと、ディテールにも気が配られている。写真ではガラガラに見えるけれど、来店時、店内はほぼ満席、主に男性の一人客がクールにハンバーガーを頬張る姿が、妙に店の雰囲気とマッチしている。

メニューはシンプル、ハンバーガー（£5.30）、チーズバーガー（£5.80）、ベジタリアンバーガー（£5.30）、ステーキバーガー（£7.95）のバーガー4種に、フレンチフライなどのサイドが数品。Barons Courtにある名店・HG Walterから仕入れた肉を使用したパテは、アイスランドの店舗と同様、炭焼きのフレーバーを出すためアメリカのガスグリルで焼かれ、アメリカンダイナー風にレタス、トマト、オニオン、ケチャップと共にサーブされる。ミディアムに焼かれたチーズバーガーは柔らかく、噛むと肉汁がにじみ出、上手い具合にとろけたチーズとの相性も最高。Burger & Lobsterのポッシュなのじゃなく、この典型的アメリカンなバーガーが私は好きなのだ（Mは何故かあまり気に入らなかったみたいだけど）。ちなみに、アメリカ風バーガーの人気店・Meat Marketよりも、ここの方が雰囲気的にもいい。

カウンターに置かれたポットに入った、セルフサービスのアメリカン・コーヒーが無料なのも、気が利いている。

Tommi’s Burger Joint on Marylebone Lane, opened in late June, is the first UK venue of Icelandish burger chain with five sites across Iceland, which is founded by an entrepreneur Tomas ‘Tommi’ Tómasson who has launched nearly 20 restaurants and hotels in his native Iceland.

Inside is casual yet retro chic, paying attention to details such as classic movie posters and American memorabilia on the walls. It looks empty in my photos, but the diner was quite full when we got there. Many of customers were men alone eating a burger cool, perfectly fitting in this Americana venue.

The menu is quite simple: burger (£5.30), cheeseburger (£5.80), veggie burger (£5.30), and steak burger  (£7.95) + fries and some sides. The beef is sourced from the estimable butcher HG Walter in Barons Court (see Evening Standard). As with all sites in Iceland, burgers are cooked on an American gas grill to enhance the charcoal flavour, and garnished in the classic diner style with iceberg lettuce, tomatoes, chopped onion and Ketchup. The cheeseburger was medium cooked, fresh & succlent, and created a beautiful harmony with nicely melted cheese. Very American, and this is the kind of burger I like (though M was not so impressed as I was), not a posh counterpart at Burger & Lobster. Also I definitely prefer Tommi’s to another American style burger shop, Meat Market as well.

Free American coffee (self service from a thermos bottle on the side counter) is generous, and an extra nice touch to this characteristic burger place.
