Yalla Yalla Lebanese Café @ SOHO

Yalla Yalla

Go!”とか“Hurry up!” お昼過ぎに行ったので、軽く、Hommos(フムス)、Tabboulé(タッブーレ)、Baba Ghannouj(ババ・ガヌーシュ)と、Mezze(メゼ)を3品注文(メゼ写真)。本当は、Wraps(材料を薄くて平たいパンでくるくる巻いた中東風サンドイッチ)を食べたかったんだけど、売り切れだった。

We found a cute Lebanese Café in the heart in SOHO. Located in a middle of red district, between the sex shops on a small alleyway off Brewer Street, Yalla Yalla (“Go! Go!” or “Hurry up!” in Arabic)  is a small restaurant with fusion of Lebanese and Western styles – modern exterior in black and yellow, the same yellow lamp shades, cushion covers and curtains made of middle eastern scarves, painting of Lebanese everyday life, and Arabic calligraphy on the white walls. The Lebanese chef from Beirut who had work experience at famous restaurants such as Fakhreldine and Kenza is in charge of food, and his Polish partner takes care of the guests. Their “Beirut Street Food” got good reviews by Time OutLondonpaper, and Financial Times, so our expectation was pretty high when we sat on the table. As we went there in the late afternoon, we just ordered 3 mezze – HommosTabboulé, and Baba Ghannouj (photo). We wanted to order wraps but it was all sold out… Hommos was pretty thick and heavy, and pomegranate seeds gave a nice touch of a color to Baba Ghannouj. Then we got walnut sweets and mint tea, and M ordered espresso as usual (photo). The tea in a small kettle was cute (though it was made in china).

But overall the taste of the mezze was just normal – you can have them any restaurants on the Edgware Road, where many middle eastern restaurants compete with each other. Maybe we should try their main dishes that food critiques mentioned in the review, before we make our final judgement.
