Natural Bristle Cushion Brush by G B Kent & Sons

獣毛のブラシが髪にいいと何かで読んだので、John Lewisオンラインショップで、G B Kent & Sons（Kent Brushes：G.B. ケント）のヘアブラシを買った。1777年創業のG.B. ケント社は、ジョージ3世から9代の治世に渡って王室御用達証を得てきた、由緒あるブラシメーカー。製造過程の多くは手作業で、今も「メイド・イン・イングランド」にこだわる。お手頃なブラシも生産しているが、伝統的技術を使い、職人が手作業で仕上げる100％ハンドメイド製品は、その品質・使い心地に高い評価を得ている。

ケント社は、bristle（ブリッスル：動物の硬い毛）を使ったブラシと、品質へのこだわりに定評がある。インドや中国の業者から最高品質の天然豚毛ブリッスルを仕入れ、柄に使用される木材は持続可能な森林から伐採された、美しさ、木目、色、加工しやすさを鑑みて厳選されたもの。そしてゴム製のクッションは柔らかさと強さ、デリケートな頭皮への心地良さと共に、何年もの使用に耐える耐久性を持つ。無理にひっぱることなく絡まった髪をやさしくとかすため、毛先は注意深く丸くされている。

私が買ったものは高価な手作り製品ではなく、ミディアムサイズ（19.5cm x 5cm）の天然黒色ブリッスルのゴムクッション・ブラシ、CSFM（£25）。製品説明には、「ブリッスルは、髪を清潔にし、艶を与え、頭皮を刺激する」とある。そのカーブのかかった柄は持ちやすく、手にフィットする。弾力性に富むブリッスルは気持ちよく頭皮をマッサージするのだが、何せ剛毛・多毛の持ち主なので、頭のてっぺんから後頭部まではいいのだが、そこから下は表面しかブリッスルが届かない。確かにブラッシングすると艶は出るのだが、しすぎるとちょっと油っぽくなり、ブリッスルが届かない毛先の辺りは静電気が起こって髪がフワフワ浮いてしまう。このブラシは、毛質が細くて毛量の少ないイギリス人のために作られたものだからだろうか。ブリッスルの感触は心地良いし、いいブラシには違いないのだと思うが、残念ながら、どうも私の髪質には合わないらしい。。。

I bought a G B Kent & Sons‘ hairbrush on John Lewis online shop, as  I read that animal hair brush makes hair healthy and shine. Founded in 1777, G B Kent & Sons, also known as Kent Brushes, is a manufacturer of high quality brushes in England, and has been granted of Royal Warrants for nine reigns from George III. The company continues to retain the craftsmanship and produces some of their brushes by hand with traditional methods (100% handmade range), as well as more affordable ones. And those are still proudly “made in England”.

Kent are renowned for their bristle brushes and their passion for high quality. The bristle is sourced from the finest bristle merchants in India and China. Timbers are chosen from sustainable forests throughout the world, selected for their beauty, grain, colour and suitability to be shaped, drilled and polished. Rubber cushions are selected for softness and strength, comfortable for delicate scalps but strong enough to be durable and withstand years of use. Plastic quills have carefully rounded ends to tease their way through tangled hair without pulling or tugging.

What I bought was not an expensive handmade one, but a medium sized (19.5cm x 5cm) pure black natural bristle cushion brush CSFM (£25). The bristle cleans hair, promotes shine and stimulates the scalp, according to Kent’s description. Its curbed handle nicely fits my hand and is easy to grip. The bristle is hard enough to stimulate my scalp comfortably. However, my hair is too thick and too many, and the brush doesn’t go all the way from the back of my head to down the edge… I can brush only top and side of my head, but not the bottom of my hair. Probably the brush is made for British fine hair type… The brush does make my hair shinier, but brushing too much make my hair a bit too greasy and causes static electricity. It is nice looking brush and the bristle feels great, but it doesn’t really work out for my hair type…

Good Beach Guide 2011 – are UK beaches Clean or Dirty?

イギリスの海水浴場の水質調査を基に、水のきれいなビーチをリストアップしたガイド「Good Beach Guide」2011年版が、今日公開された。Marine Conservation Society（MCS/海洋保全団体）が1987年より発行しているこのガイドは、1960年に作られた海水浴場の「Golden List」に起源を持つ。下水で汚染された海で泳いだ後に、6歳の娘をポリオで亡くしたWakefield（ウェイクフィールド）夫妻は、未処理の下水が海洋投棄されていることに憤りを感じ、このリストを作成した。これが、他の海洋汚染防止キャンペーンとともに、1976年における海水浴場の水質のヨーロッパ基準策定と、下水処理への膨大な投資につながったという。

MCSは、欧州連合のBathing Water Directive（水浴場の水質指導規定）を基に、イギリス国内の782カ所の水質を調査。今年の調査結果によると、昨年に比べて42カ所多い、461カ所が最高レベルの「recommended（推薦）」を取得。24年の発行期間の間で3番目に高い数値となったが、それでも46カ所は最低レベルの「basic pass」さえクリアすることが出来なかった。

35年前に制定されたヨーロッパ法の水質基準の見直しにより、2015年度からより厳格になる予定で、2012年からその監視が始まる。その結果、将来2倍近くのビーチが基準をクリアできなくなる恐れがあるとMCSは危惧する。下水の海洋投棄は未だに合法で、監視が充分に出来ておらず、未処理の下水を放水している回数がチェックできているのは、たった4分の1だけだそう。

汚染された海で泳ぐと、お腹の具合が悪くなったり、目や耳、喉の感染症を引き起こす可能性があるそう。それに未処理の下水が混ざった海で泳ぐなんて、考えただけで気持ち悪い！環境問題にうるさい（と思っていた）イギリスが、まだ海洋投入前の下水処理を義務づけていないなんて、少し驚きだ。イギリスでビーチ・バカンスをお考えの方、「Good Beach Guide 2011 Recommended Beaches」（推奨ビーチリスト）を見てから、行き先決定を。

A comprehensive guide to bathing water quality around the UK, Good Beach Guide 2011 launched today. Published by the Marine Conservation Society(MCS) since 1987, the Guide began life as a ‘Golden List’ of beaches in 1960. Tony and Daphne Wakefield had lost their six-year-old daughter, after she contracted polio swimming at a sewage contaminated beach. Outraged that raw sewage was being pumped into the sea, the Wakefields published a new ‘Golden List’ of clean bathing beaches. This, along with other clean sea campaigns, led to the introduction of European standards for bathing water quality in 1976, and massive investment by the water industry to clean up raw sewage (quoted fromGood Beach Guide).

The MCS tests water quality at 782 sites across the UK, under the EU’s Bathing Water Directive rules. This year’s results suggest that the number of beaches given the top rating was the third highest in its 24-year history: 461 beaches gained its top “recommended” award, 42 more than last year, although 46 sites failed to reach the mandatory minimum level of “basic pass”.

The basic standards of water quality were set in European law 35 year ago, but stricter rules will come into force from 2015 due to the revision of the Bathing Water Directive, and these will start to be monitored from 2012. As a result, the MCS concerns that almost double the number of beaches could fail in future years. It is still legal to pump sewage into the sea and not enough of those outlets were being monitored. Only a quarter are monitored to check how often they are putting untreated sewage into the sea.

Water pollution can give swimmers stomach upsets or ear, nose and throat infections. Also it is disgusting to swim in the sea mixed with water from sewage (I didn’t know it is still legal)!! Bread Boutique @ Duke of York Square, King’s Road

Duke of York Square（デューク・オブ・ヨーク・スクエア）は、チェルシーのキングスロードにある、ショッピング＆ダイニングエリア。歩行者天国になっていて、人気のブティックやカフェ、アイスクリーム・パーラー、Partridgesという地元のグローサリーがならぶ。今日は暖かくて天気が良かったので、多くの人たちが、カフェの外に置かれたテーブルで、車の排気ガスを気にせず、アルフレスコを楽しんでいた。その中の1軒のBread Boutique（ブレッド・ブティック）の、ミニマルなインテリアと、ウィンドーから見える美味しそうなパンにひかれて、私たちもそこでランチすることにした。

Bread Boutiqueは、以前3年間、Daylesford Organics（デイルズフォード・オーガニック）でパン焼き職人のヘッドを勤め、スウェーデンの皇室にも提供したこともあるSimon John Spearsと、ナイツブリッジにあるトレンディーなBrompton Quarter Brasserie（ブロンプトン・クォーター・ブラッセリー）の創始者であるDoron Zilkhaのコラボで誕生したとのこと。道理でパンが美味しそうなはずだ。

私たちはアボカドとサンドライトマト、モッツァレラチーズのサンドイッチを注文。具は取り立てて美味しいというほどではなかったけれど、パンは外はパリッと中はしっとり、バターの味がしっかりした、バゲットの見本とも言える出来映え。その後に頂いた、ブルーベリー・マフィンも、私たちがロンドンで食べたマフィンの中で5本の指に入るうまさ。でも高級エリアのチェルシーでは、高品質なものは安くない。普通の大きさのサンドイッチで約£6.00、小さめのマフィンで£2.50ほどする（レシートがないため、大体の値段）。この値段を払う価値があると思うか否かは、あなた次第。

The Duke of York Square on King’s Road, Chelsea is a shopping and dining quarter with popular boutiques, cafés, ice cream parlor, and Partridges grocer. It was a warm sunny day in London today, and many people were enjoying al fresco on this relaxing pedestrianized area, pollution-free from busy King’s Road. We had a little break at one of the cafés, the Bread Boutique, attracted by their minimalist décor and gorgeous breads on display.

The Bread Boutique is the collaboration between Simon John Spears who had been an established Daylesford Organics’ head baker for three years and has catered for the Swedish royal family, and Doron Zilkha, a founder of trendy Brompton Quarter Brasserie in Knightsbridge. No wonder why their breads look so impressive.

We ordered sandwiches with avocado, sun dried tomatoes and mozzarella. Ingredients were nothing special, but their bread was lavishly buttered, and crunchy outside but soft inside – the way baguette should be. We also had a blueberry muffin and it was wonderful as well. It is awarded as one of the best muffins we had in London. Of course high quality aren’t cheap in London, especially in high end Chelsea, unfortunately. You have to pay up few pounds more for normal size sandwiches (about £6.00) and small muffin cost about £2.50 (I don’t have a receipt and the prices are approximate) . It’s up to you to decide if it’s worth it or not.

Neal’s Yard Dairy @ Covent Garden

Neal’s Yard（ニールズ・ヤード）は、モンマス・ストリート（Monmouth Street）、ショーツ・ガーデンズ（Shorts Gardens）、ニール・ストリート（Neal’s Street）に囲まれた、コベント・ガーデンの隠れ家的エリア。王立造幣局局長（Master of the Mint）であったThomas Neale（トーマス・ニール）の名を冠した、この「ヤード（囲い地）」で、70年代初期に「alternative London（オルタナティブ・ロンドン）」のリーダーであったNick Saundersがイニシアティブを取り、「コミュニティ」の再生を目指して、政府の補助金を頼りにしないニューエイジ系ビジネスを次々に設立した。今でもそのコンセプトが引き継がれ、日本でも人気のNeal’s Yard Remedies（ニールズヤード・レメディーズ）、チーズ専門店のNeal’s Yard Dairy、そしてベジタリアン・カフェのWorld Food Cafeなど、自然食品やオーガニックフード、オルタナティブ・メディシン（代替医療）のメッカとして、いつも観光客でにぎわっている。

その一角にあるNeal’s Yard Dairy（ニールズヤード・デイリー）は、1979年にオープンした乳製品専門店で、高品質のイギリス産チーズを取り扱う。元々アイスクリームやギリシャ風ヨーグルトを販売していたが、冬場は閑古鳥が鳴くので、チーズを売り始めたのだそうだ。そして代々チーズを生産し続ける各地の小規模家族経営のチーズ製造業者を訪問するうちに、イギリス製チーズを専門に取り扱う事を決意。今や、ロンドンでチーズと言えばニールズヤード・デイリー、と言われる程の有名店に成長。コヴェントガーデンとバラ・マーケットに自社店舗を所有するほか、大手高級スーパーや高級食料品店でもその製品を取り扱っている。

コヴェント・ガーデン店は、10人も入れば身動きできなくなるほど小さな店だが、イギリス各地から集められたチーズがうずたかく積まれており、前を通りかかると、強烈なチーズの匂いが漂う。試食もでき、いつもチーズ愛好者で賑わっている。今日は通りがかりにその匂いにつられ、試食したコーンウォール産のチーズ、Cornish Yargが美味しかったので購入。防水加工された紙のシンプルな包装、同じくシンプルなロゴ入りのショップのビニール袋もいい。

Neal’s Yard is a queit courtyard in Covent Garden, surrounded by Shorts Gardens, Monmouth Street, and Neil Street. Taking its name from Thomas Neale, Master of the Mint, Neal’s Yard, is a wholefood haven and a center of ‘alternative’ Covent Garden. The idea of Neal’s Yard was conceived in the early ’70s by Nick Saunders, who is known as one of the leaders of ‘alternative London’ movement. Aiming to  revive a sense of village community and he set up a series of businesses without government subsidy, which most of them are still going today. Neal’s Yard contains some well-known shops such as Neal’s Yard Remedies, Neal’s Yard Dairy and vegan restaurant World Food Cafe, as well as other health food shops, cafés and new age retailers, and is a popular destination for tourists as well.

Established in 1979, Neal’s Yard Dairy is the Dairy specialises in providing high quality and unusual British cheeses from small and often family run producers in the British Isles. It sold ice cream and Greek style yoghurt produced in the shop in early days, but in winter trade was poor so the Dairy started selling cheese. On visiting their suppliers, they discovered many producers that had been making cheese for generations, and decided to sell and supply specialty British cheeses. Now the Dairy has grown to be one of the top quality cheese retailers in UK, and has two own shops in Covent Garden and Borough Market, as well as its products are sold at large wholefood supermarkets and quality food shops.

The Neal’s Yard Dairy’s Covent Garden shop is so tiny that probably no more than 10 people can fit inside. There are many kinds of cheese piling up in such small space and you can smell the cheese very strong from outside.  You can sample any of the cheese available in the store, and always the shop is packed with cheese-lovers. We were also lured by the smell and tried some of the cheese. We liked Cornish Yarg from Cornwall, and purchased some. Its simple wrapping with white waterproof paper and transparent plastic bag only with their logo is nice as well.

Vita Audio R1 DAB/FM Radio

Mがベッドの横に置いて愛聴していたLexon Tykho Radio（赤）が、3ヶ月で壊れてしまったので、Vita Audio R1 DAB/FM Radio（定価£179.99）を新しく購入した。色はこれまた赤で、ラッカー塗りでつるっとした感じに仕上がっている。Mのモノ選びの基準はまずデザイン。どんなに便利だったり実用的でも、デザインが気に入らなければ絶対買わない。電化製品だけじゃなく食べ物から家庭用品、文房具など、買うもの全てにおいてこの調子だから、ちょっと困る。中国製だけれどイギリスでデザインされたこのラジオも、レビューサイトや雑誌等で高い評価を受けているというのもプラス要因だけれど、最終的にはデザインが気に入って購入を決めた。でも、すでに廃番になってしまったモデルなので、あんまりお店のチョイスはなく、ネットで探して、最終的にアイルランドのギフト用品を扱うウェブショップPressieportで注文。

音質も良く、ipod等に接続すればスピーカーとしても使えるし、サイズも17cm x 13cm x 13cmとコンパクトなので、ベッド脇に置いても邪魔にならない。コンパクトラジオとしてはちょっと値段がはるけれど、デザインがスタイリッシュなので、使ってない時でも、インテリア・オブジェとしてもいい感じ。寝る前のひと時、心地よい音楽を楽しんでいる。

M’s bedside radio Lexon Tykho Radio (red) was broken only 3 months after purchase, so he bought a new radio Vita Audio R1 DAB/FM Radio (SRP £179.99). The color is red again, with glossy lacquer finish. M’s first priority when he buy something is definitely design. Even if the product is very useful and practical, he never buys if the design is not up to his standard. Not only to home electronics but he applies this principle to everything, from food packaging to home products and stationaries – so I cannot buy anything without his design approval. This radio is made in China but is designed in UK, and he decided to buy it mainly because of its design, though good reviews that the radio earned from tech magazines and websites a big plus. Since the model is discontinued and there are not much choice in retailers, and after checking internet for a while, we bought it from Pressieport, an Irish online Irish gift store.

The sound quality is quite good, and it can be used as a speaker by connecting to ipod or something. The size is compact, 17cm (6.75″) x 13cm (5″) x 13cm (5″),  and it doesn’t obstruct when M put next to the bed. The price is a bit high as a compact radio, but its stylish design can be seen as a piece of interior object, as well as we enjoy nice music before we fall a sleep.
